I'm expanding our driveway from one side for a 16", does this good as a base under a brick and tolerate the loads from cars driving over it?
Asked by: Heba
It is a good sub base for that project, just make sure that the brick that you use is vehicular rated though. Thank you for your inquiry!

I don't recommend water at all unless you want to water it after tamping/packing. I found that there was a lot of clay in the mix and it started to clump together on the bottom of my tamper and on my feet and was getting big gouges in it. It feels like a wetting after it is completely leveled and tamped would help bond it together though.

I want to just use this product by itself to fill in areas of a "BASE" driveway in the country. I will not be putting anything over it. Will this be a good product to fill in areas of a partially muddy, country driveway?
Asked by: Cyndie
I wouldn’t use it for that.

0.5 cu. ft. Paver Base is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 238.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked Great with Leveling Sand Had an area with no grass that we wanted to add a paver patio. I initially leveled the existing dirt and sand area out and watered the heck out of it for a week to ensure the existing material had compacted. I then added 2" of the Step 1 Paver Base and ran a plate compactor over it two times in each direction. I then added an additional 2" of the Step 1 Paver Base, and ran the plate compactor again over it twice, in both directions. It is really important that you ensure there are no high or low spots (I kept it under 1/4"). I then placed a stick of 1" PVC Pipe along one edge of the area, and another 8' away. I then added 1" of the Leveling Sand between the PVC, and then pulled a very straight 2x4 along the two pipes (called screeding) to create a smooth, level surface. I repeated this until the entire area had been completed. Was then just a matter of placing down the pavers, adding the border to keep everything secure, and swept some PermaSand in the joints, got it wet, and the patio looks incredible!

I highly recommend this paver base as it works well for setting up landscaping stone and keeps them in place over each season. Annually I may add paver base to the existing landscape stones. I used it also as a foundation to place river rock on an area in my yard that our gutters drain water into (away from the house). I am using this product to keep the stone in place as I build a rock garden in this corner of the yard that ends in a corner of the fenced yard. I have used other paver base from another store that moves all over the place rather than forming a foundation. I highly recommend this product.

This product is unusable as a base for installing patio pavers. I wanted to make a small pad in front of my shed, so I bought six bags. I opened three and poured them into half of my prep’ed area, noticing some stone. As I spread this, it became clear it contains about 1/3 bag of stone ranging from 2-3 inches. The “crusher” is more clay-like, and brownish; not the gray, finer crusher I’ve had delivered in the past. There is no way you could possibly get a flat base with this high, large stone content. This is unusable because of the size and quantity of the stones, which will eventually result in you patio pavers cracking. (I’ve also found some wood in the content.) Avoid this product unless you want to add a lot of frustration to your project and sift out a lot of rock...

I used it under a concrete slab. Only one person knew what is was talking about when I asked for 3/4 minus gravel but it all worked out in the end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not sure why there are so many negative reveiws... So I bought this product instead of buying a truckload of limestone base material. Guys... this product is exactly perfect for creating a good solid base layer so i’m not really sure why all the negative complaints... it is the perfect size gravel to level just about any area. If yall watch some youtube videos on how to install pavers you’ll see that this material goes UNDER EVERYTHING ELSE. In other words this is the first layer after you excavate your area. It IS NOT SCREED SAND. Once you spread this layer into your area it has to be plate compacted. Or compacted with a hand tamp. Worked great for me and was a decent alternative to buying a yard/pile of limestone material from a landscape company.

I liked the mix of sand and stone to make a more solid base though I would have liked the stone to be all gravel size. The mix including some larger stones, 1"- 1-1/4", does not smooth as well as all being pea to pit sized. Since it rained hard in between spreading the base and the leveling sand, the larger stones surfaced and had to be tampered again. In all, my project was a success and I have a very nice patio.

Basically it's a mixture of very fine dust (which is bad because it will hold in water) or really large rocks (3"+), which is also bad because it makes leveling impossible. To be fair, it's "crushed" rock, but not in a way that is helpful for what this is meant for. I found your basic 3/4 rock to work far better when putting down pavers, retaining wall, etc. than this stuff.

Settles well and levels off fantastic. I've used under my paver walkways and this season put some down for the above ground pool base. Compacts nice and flat, drainage is just "ok", tends to retain some moisture if you do not use a larger aggregate base below it.
