If this product is available at your local Home Depot, you can purchase by the piece. If you buy online, it is purchased by the pallet. Thank you for your inquiry!

Can I make a propane burning fire feature out of this product?

I don't see why not. You could leave enough space between two bricks at the base for the propane feed tube and then fill the interior with lava rock and have the propane burner buried under the rock. You'd just need to find the proper burner and go on the net and hunt around to see how it can be done. Likely someone else has done it. The only issue I could foresee is if the burner wasn't positioned properly and heated up the lava rock to the point where it melted the propane hose. That could be a problem.

can I buy the metal insert seperatly? I need to replace my current one.

You can buy the insert separately either online or through your local Home Depot at the pro desk. Thank you for your inquiry!

The cost of the stones purchased separately is $135, leaving about $360 for the stainless steel ring. Something seems way off about the pricing?

I paid $179 and change for the kit at my local HD. I considered just buying the material. It's a simple build, but I couldn't find the steel ring sold separately. I paid about $50 more for the kit as opposed to just buying the material. That seems about right with the steel ring adding $50 to the price of the kit. You can find one piece, metal, insert rings on ebay. I just didn't feel like waiting for one to be delivered and finding out it didn't fit correctly.

Color Doesn't Last
I bought a grey version of this in May. Since they only had brown in-store I had to order online. The order got messed up by the manufacturer, had to do a ton of coordination with HD and PaveStone. Finally arrived at the store a month late. Brought it home, pretty easy to assemble, looked nice; was a slightly lighter grey than my patio. Less than 6 months later, the gray color has washed away and it is a mottled brown. PaveStone won't stand behind the product when I contacted them, HD says I need to talk to Pavestone.

Great Kit & Easy to Assemble
Very pleased with the final result - but do yourself a favor and watch the how-to videos. We used four tubes of heavy duty construction adhesive and bought 10 bags of paver base - probably more than needed. It is very sturdy and looks great. We framed the outside of pit with red gravel.

I probably could have saved a few dollars if I had purchased the material rather than the kit, but I could not find the steel collar that rings the stone on the inside sold separately. The kit was delivered on time the next day. I purchased the pit that is three bricks high (46 in. X 10.5 in.). I went back to HD and bought enough bricks to add two more tiers. It was an easy build and looks great. I placed it on paver stones and incorporated them into the walk out to my garage. My first fire will be tomorrow night with wood from the pallet the kit was delivered on. I recommend this product.

very nice
This kit was $199 at my store. I bought an extra course of stones to make it 4 layers. Instructions dont really say it but you need to ensure the ground is stable and flat like tamping in some pebble stone or something similar. Several compliments. Took about 2 hrs including the digging.

Buy in store
This exact item is only $199 in the store already wrapped up and ready to go if you have a truck or rent one of theirs. The local stores should have the bowls for an additional $99 too.

Looks nice and (at least gives the illusion of being) safer to use with my younger kids than the steel / metal fire pits. Blocks stayed cool enough to touch without getting burned. Seems pretty sturdy with the metal insert. Can be moved if needed since blocks are not secured together. But expensive.
