Answer This Question

A:  The plans I see on this site is a 45.8" diameter pit (Not sure if that is inside or outside size) show 36 mini and 36 Trapezoidal shaped stones for a three block height firepit, or 48 mini and 48 trapezoidal for a four tiered firepit height.

Q:Trying to determine how many stones are needed to match a fire pit ring (or vice versa: what size ring do I need for a pit with X amount of stones per layer)

    Answer This Question

A:  This is a very simple DIYer type project and it will take less than 3 hours from buying in store and loading your vehicle to using to build one of these firepit projects and it is well worth the investment in time and money. 12 of the smaller blocks and 12 of the larger blocks needed to build each fire pit ring layer. Dimensions inside 32" dimensions outside 45 1/2" I have built 2 fire pits with these blocks; one in backyard and other at our lake property. I recommend using a tamped down crushed stone base and I do one layer under surface of lawn and 4 layers above the lawn grade. Total bricks/blocks needed is 60 of each size. Also I recommend a large firepit screen that unfortunately Home Depot did not se;; but I picked up on Internet from Catalina Creations. I originally bought a smaller insert at Home Depot for +/- $75 which was nice but if you want a larger fire with more wood getting the larger screen for about $250 is worth the difference and has many advantages. All in all the brick structure ran me around $250 and the balance brought the total project cost to around $550.00 for each firepit. We get tons of use and enjoyment and it was well worth the added investment. I do not recommend gluing the blocks in place because then you have the ability to adjust, modify or clean in future years. I try to do that every couple years but it is not necessary as these blocks weather and hold up very well. If you repaint the screen and the tray each year with Rustoleum spray paint the firepit will look new for many years of enjoyment.

Good Product, It is a rough product, so care should be taken when choosing them out at the store to make sure you don't get a stone that is too damaged. Looks good though in it's final product.

These blocks were heavy enough to stack in two rows for a nice border between the driveway and grass.
