Product Overview

PenaShield is a ready-to-use formula that can be sprayed or brushed on raw wood. It is a unique patented preservative that penetrates the wood, delivering long-lasting protection. PenaShield will not stain or discolor wood; and once dry, can be painted or treated with a water sealer, stained or varnished like normal wood. The active ingredient in PenaShield is a borate mineral salt which sets PenaShield apart from competitors in that the mineral salt will not break down over time like other synthetic chemicals. Whenever you're working with wood, whether it's projects or repairs, always use PenaShield to protect the wood.
  • Kills and prevents wood rot, decay, fungi, termites, carpenter ants, and wood destroying beetles
  • PenaShields active ingredient is a borate mineral salt that will not break down over time, delivering effective, long-term protection for your wood
  • Depending on porosity and texture, 1 gal. of PenaShield will treat 150 sq. ft. - 250 sq. ft. of wood
  • For indoor wood, PenaShield will last the life of the wood
  • For outdoor wood, PenaShield will last as long as an applied water repellant is maintained; if the wood is not sealed, a reapplication of PenaShield will be needed every 1-5 years
  • Wood 1 in. or thicker should be treated twice
  • No staining or discoloration with PenaShield, after the wood as dried, you can paint, stain, or varnish the wood as normal

The ingredients are excellent, so I am anticipating true results for infestation prevention. The application was simple with a pump sprayer. It was recommended to apply to dry and untreated timber, then apply a coat, wait to dry and apply a second coat, then dry and apply a wood sealant. That makes great sense, so I am confident for great decades of future infestation protection.

Low concentration stuff you can probably make
So this is an 8.5% solution of sodium octoborate pentahydrate I think, a borate salt which I guess has the advantage of being pretty soluble in water, unlike normal borax (Mule Team box stuff), which is a boron decahydrate. There's also a tetrahydrate that is in Borashield I think. Borax works great if you can get to dissolve and penetrate wood. I've found that if you mix equal parts of Borax and TSP in very hot tap water, the Borax dissolves better and you can soak or spray this on wood.

An old church in our community was infested with Powder Post Beetles. Last fall we sprayed the upstairs with this product but ran out and sprayed the basement with a mixture of boiled water and Borax. This spring, when we went back to give the building another spraying, where we sprayed with this product — there was fresh evidence that we still had powder post beetles. Where we sprayed in the basement, with our homemade mixture, there was no further evidence of the beetles.

      not preventing anything
I applied this on wood pretty generously. A week later termites were still crawling like it's nothing, even when I separated the wood far away from their nest. Two weeks later I saw a lot of mildew forming, even though the wood was covered from rain.

Easy to apply with a brush but unsure of minimum temperature to apply it- I was unable to find much on instructions for temp.
