About This Product

Pennington's Straw Blankets are an excellent way to establish and encourage new growth when laying seed. These wheat straw blankets enhance seed germination dramatically by protecting the seed, holding the seed in place, controlling weeds and retaining moisture in neutral and challenging areas. Pennington Straw Blankets are the most effective method to preventing erosion and washout, particularly in areas with hills and slopes. They can also be placed around foundations to protect new masonry from mud splatter stain. Once your seed has begun to grow in, your Pennington Straw Blankets will naturally start to degrade, leaving you with amazing results. The blankets are 100% biodegradable and the netting degrades over time with exposure to sunlight. Make sure to secure the blanket tightly to the ground using biodegradable stakes every 2 ft. when applying. When the product is staked tightly to the ground, you can avoid animal entrapment and getting it caught in your lawn mower from the netting. The grass should be 3-4 in. tall before mowing for the first few cuts. The degradation process can vary depending on the environmental conditions and exposure to sunlight - heavily shaded areas will take longer to degrade due to the lack of UV exposure.

Questions & Answers

Does this come with stakes
ByJul 27, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

No. Stakes are not included with the Pennington Wheat Straw Grass Blanket. For proper installation, you'll need to purchase landscape staples or stakes separately. The blanket should be secured tightly to the ground—typically every 2 feet and along the edges—to help keep it in place and prevent wind from lifting it.

    Answer This Question

Hi! Yes, the Wheat Straw Grass Blanket is made from natural wheat straw and is intended to provide erosion control and help retain moisture for newly seeded areas. The straw itself is chemical-free, biodegradable, and the blanket uses photodegradable netting that breaks down with exposure to sunlight over time.

If a dog eats it will she get sick is it pet safe
        ByJun 1, 2026
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Hi Pete! This product is made from 100% biodegradable wheat straw and features 100% photodegradable netting, meaning these materials are designed to break down naturally over time. To ensure safety for animals, including dogs and wildlife, it is important to secure the blanket tightly to the ground using stakes every 2 feet. This helps to avoid animal entrapment and prevents the netting from getting caught in lawn mowers. While the materials are biodegradable, if a pet ingests a significant amount of any foreign material, it is always recommended to consult a veterinarian.

If I lay a big section over seed and existing grass, will this straw blanket kill any existing grass undernit
          ByMay 16, 2026
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

When the straw blanket is laid over existing grass, it will block sunlight from reaching the grass. Sunlight is essential for grass growth, and depriving the existing grass of light can cause it to weaken and eventually die over time. The blanket is primarily designed to protect new seeds, hold them in place, control weeds, and retain moisture to enhance germination.

Protected seed from pets before germination
I bought and used this on March 1 of this year. We have 3 very active dogs- 2 pit bulls and a German Shepard husky mix. We used to have a gorgeous lawn until adopting our dogs and it depresses me to see how we had let the yard go. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was worth a try. We laid a combination of Scott’s tall fescue seed along with the straw emulsion mats. We had to purchase extra landscaping staples to secure all of the edges. The dogs would trample over it daily and I’d have to constantly have to reposition the edge every couple of days. I watered heavily twice a day for about 3 weeks and saw seedlings start to sprout. The seedlings grew fast from there but were very thin and delicate. At times I didn’t think ot would survive but I kept persistently watering. About the first week of April I noticed that the grass under neath the straw wasn’t growing anymore but getting matted under the netting. Thats when I decided to remove the netting. Over the course of days i slowly and carefully raked a little of the straw at a time. The straw did not biodegrade and had to be removed gently. The grass that grew in the very bare spots were very patchy. But it did give me hope as the patches created little “islands” to to try and reseed again. This time i used Pennington patch and repair along with pest moss for the bald spots. Again, everyday since when I started in March, I watered twice a day. Even if for a brief moment to kept the seed wet. Fast forward to today, May 12, and I now have a beautiful green lush lawn that is strong enough to handle my dogs running around! Definitely well worth it if you are meticulous and are willing to put in some effort!

These rolls of hay are a great concept! I needed two for the area I was seeding I just wish they were a little fuller and about 10 feet longer! It’s nice that the hay is intertwined with a mesh netting so it’s really not messy and super easy to lay down.

                      Bird got tangled
I bought it 2 or 3 weeks ago.it was very expensive and did not save me significant amount of time since I had to staple it to the ground. There is grass growing in the area where the net is but so is where just hay was set. A bird also got tangled in the net. This was very scary and sad. My kids saw the whole thing

                        plastic grid not decomposing
The grid is still very much in place after months. Grass did grow better but concerned that the webbing will snag in mower or dogs will pull on exposed areas and uproot new grass. How long should webbing take to decompose?

                          More plastic than straw
A plastic net wrapped around straw. The net doesn't actually hold the straw well - simply unrolling the bundle separates mist of it and you are left holding a pile of plastic netting and about a quarter of what you want to spread. Unrolling it in place doesn't work too well either as you're just covering over the straw you actually want with a loose plastic net. Dumbest product I've ever bought. Next time just sell me a bale.

I half though this was a joke at first. There was almost no hay. What a waste.

                              Not worth it
It’s mostly a plastic grid - hardly any straw. Kind of defeats the purpose. Wasn’t able to return.

Buy Straw! A lot better and cheaper!
The nylon webbing is tougher to pull apart between the layers. Not enough straw with it. Way over priced for what you get. I have several spots in the nylon webbing where there is no straw. 3 bales of straw would have done the same amount at $6.00 per bale. So $18.00 and would have been a lot better and half the price.

                                  Poor Quality
Bought four, laid down two. Each was hard to roll out, with the netting constantly snagging and needing unnecessary extra effort. As a result, much of the straw fell from the blanket. Way too overpriced, will be bringing the unused back. One roll had much less straw attached than the other one. Hopefully the photo shows that effectively. Do yourself a favor, buy some straw instead.
