A:  According to Pfister, it is 038877424872. The Pfister correct part number # 974-291. Retailers can label the part as # S74-291 or # 974-2910.

Q:Is this what I need to replace the 974-322 cartridge

    Answer This Question

A:  George, I do not believe that this will work to replace a Pfister 974-322 (or replaced by 974-3210) . I have searched Home Depot web site and it does not appear they carry the 974-322 or a compatible replacement. There are other on line sites that do list the 974-322 cartridge which some say have been replaced by the 974-3210. You can find both on the Pfister web site. "The newer version of the 0X8, VB8, JV8, and JX8 valve bodies that uses the 974-321 or 974-322 cartridge will NOT be compatible with other cartridges due to a shallow casted rough-in valve."

A:  This item will not be compatible.

Q:what size Allen wrench to remove handle?

      A:  3mm

A:  Pete, my Delta shower control handle takes a 3/32 Allen wrench- others have said theirs uses 1/8 inch. Sometimes a squirt of penetrating oil, then let sit for awhile, helps removal. I put a little plumbers silicone grease on the threads when installing allen screw- makes it a little easier when it is time to take it loose.

        Answer This Question

A:  Sam there is no real standardization of parts in plumbing fixtures. Parts are not generally interchangeable. It is best when you know the manufacturer of the fixture- then you can look up the part number on their website. I realize that most folks don't know the manufacturer of the faucets in their home.- if you take your cartridge into the store possibly the plumbing pro employee can assist you. The shower balancing cartridge you asked about is for Price Pfister. There is another Price Pfister balancing valve 974-491 but I do not believe it is stocked by Home Depot. Also the dimensions shown online a lot of times are the size of the packaging.- not the actual item. The computer pictures are not actual size so you cannot necessarily compare the size of your valve to the picture.

Works perfectly to stop the dripping faucet due to worn seals. My old one is over 20 years old.

This What is Needed In Most Cases
These Phister shower valves consist of two crucial replacement components: the front temperature control and the rear balancing assembly. If your shower valve lacks temperature differentiation or overall pressure, these parts are the go-to solution. Take note of the cartridge color after removing the handle and unscrewing the trim sleeve. A light gray indicates the older single-piece model, while black threads signify the updated two-piece model, with this being the rear component. To streamline efforts, I recommend replacing both front and rear sections when addressing these shower valves. The shower cartridge assembly is the sole mechanical part, making it the primary replacement for any issues.
