Ordered this grate to replace the ancient one in the house when we moved in. Was concerned that the Ember Retainer would hinder the upward airflow needed for an optimal burn but that was not the case. The pattern is small enough to keep "burnable" sized chunks yet large enough to allow ash to fall to the bottom. The grate is a bit taller than our old one but again, it seems to enhance the airflow. It's lightweight and sturdy and hope it remains so after a season's worth of fires. Overall, a solid product for a reasonable price.

I received the 30" 6-bar fireplace grate to test for Home Depot and was very disappointed. I have used it for 4 fires and it has already started to bend under just the weight of the logs. I was careful not to overload the grate as I thought the bars looks a bit undersized. Did make have and overly hot fire either. I think this grates best use would be for just those fake logs. Doesn't seem loke it ca hold up to the weight of regular firewood.

We had one in our fireplace but this one is much nicer. I would highly recommend. We don't use our fireplace for actual fires. Will use it more for a centerpiece. I cannot comment how it holds up under an actual fire. However the way is constructed leads me to believe that would hold up just fine. I would highly recommend to any homeowner who has a fireplace.

This fireplace grate was needed in my patio smoker to hold my hickory and cherry smoking wood. It fit perfectly and have loaded it up with wood ready for the weekend smoking of ribs and a whole ribeye roast. The grate is extremely well made, is heavy iron and will undoubtedly last decades. Tough the grate was made for a fireplace it has found a new purpose and will serve me well for decades to come.

I love the ember retainer, as my old fireplace grate often let logs drop through before they were completely burned, causing the hot-burning coals at the end of the burning session to sit in the ashes and continue burning for a very long time. By keeping the air flowing around them, they burn more completely and more reliably. Take note of the measurements! My fireplace opening is 30 inches so I ordered the 30 inch grate. Because the measurement is at the widest point, which is several inches back from the front of the grate, it would not fit within my fireplace. I thought I could bend the legs just a bit to make it work, so I heated a corner of the leg with a torch and hit it a time or two with a blacksmith hammer. Every single weld on that leg broke at once. I know that's my fault and this grate is probably sturdy enough for normal use, but be aware that it cannot handle abuse well.

We've been using the open hearth fireplace in this house every winter for 23 years. The fireplace is not the main source of heat, but it is at times an important secondary source because we have had access to quite a lot of oddly shaped and large sized chunks of wood that don't work well in an ordinary wood stove. This is the fifth fireplace grate for us now. What happens it that eventually the bars in the middle of the grate burn through and eventually the grate no longer provides sufficient support for the firewood. Our previous grates were all made of cast iron. This one appears to be made of steel. Some alloys of steel can stand up to heat and oxygen in the air better than cast iron. Only time will tell how this one holds up, but I'm hopeful. This is the first one we've had with the ember retaining screen. It does hold the burning embers up out of the ashes so they can burn more completely, and so makes more complete, efficient use of the fuel. I'm pretty sure the center of the ember retaining screen will go the way of the burned out bars of our previous fireplace grates long before the main structure of the grate has succumbed to the high heat and oxygen. That's OK. The grate will still function as well as the standard fireplace grate even without the ember retaining screen.
