About This Product

Pond Shield is a non-toxic epoxy liner designed for the pond and water feature industry. Created to construction water features or ponds with a more designer, formal or natural look than rubber liners are able to offer with no more unsightly folds or creases. In addition, unlike rubber liners, Pond Shield is available in eight colors - Black, Clear, Competition Blue, Sky Blue, Forest Green, Tan, Gray and White. Pond Shield is used for waterproofing structured surfaces found in water features such as Koi ponds, pools, fountains, aquariums, salt water tanks, hydroponics, streams, waterfalls, reflecting pools, mini lakes, holding tanks, etc. Easily applied and easy to maintain, for most applications, a single coat application is all that is needed for proper coverage. In addition, your pond will be virtually maintenance free with a surface that algae can be easily wiped off of and is safe for fish and plants. Pond Shield offers both strength and flexibility in a coating, strength and flexibility that is tested from -78° F to 140° F. Pond Shield is an epoxy pond liner that has been specifically designed to bond to porous or abraded materials. With a tensile bond strength stronger than the internal strength of the concrete, your single coat of Pond Shield epoxy will stick to what you apply it to. Over time, hairline cracks can form in concrete, mortar or grout joints. Being flexible, Pond Shield resists mimic cracking and provides the best protection possible in a coating.

Questions & Answers

We have a rock waterfall with concrete, currently there is leaks because the concrete is porous. Would Pond Shield be a workable solution to this application?

Answer This Question

Pond Shield is the correct solution for any type of water feature. You just need to make sure all submerged areas are coated 100%. If you miss anything, those missed areas could be potential leaks so take your time and double check your work. What are the steps for preparation? We have a 90-year old, rather large, irregularly shaped concrete pond with original built-in stone and brick shelves. If the entire surface has to be sand-blasted for the product to properly bond, it's a deal breaker. The best we can do is use a concrete/stone etching product with a broom to clean the surface. Pics attached show its condition just before we cleaned out the remaining water and muck.

Will this work for a part-time water feature(waterfall-masonry), usually dry, morning sun only. Will the clear dis-color or yellow over time? How often might I need to reseal it? The waterfall feeds into a fish pond. Or is there a better recommended product for above ground/partial use applications? Location: Tampa, Florida

        Answer This Question

Pond Shield works best if always under water. If it is outside of the water, the UV inhibitors will take the full brunt of the UV and the coating will age faster. What you can do is after Pond Shield has tacked up, you can top coat it with an oil based outdoor UV rated polyurethane. The Polyurethane will reflect most of the UV back and any remainder that gets through will be sucked up by the UV inhibitors within the Pond Shield. This will in turn make Pond Shield last longer when outside of the water. Polyurethane is pretty inexpensive and while it will do a great job with the UV, it will not last a long time under water. You will have to check it every few years and touch up as needed. If you have any other questions, call us toll free at 800-716-1545 or visit us online at www.pondarmor.com

The product needs to be cut with alcohol to allow good application flow …more than the manufacturer suggests. The product sets up way way quicker than I expected. Think 20 minutes to 24 minutes. Whatever brush or roller you use as well as mixing container will need to be trashed after each batch most likely. So you should have back ups before you start the project. I couldn’t clean up fast enough. What really is needed is a retarding agent to slow down the set timetable. Not sure without guidance what that would be… but it would be helpful. Sensational result.

the ONLY CLEAR coat solution but too EXPENSIVE for non-lasting protection
            1. only option. we tried in vain nationwide! to find professional CLEAR coat product for natural stone/concrete surface for a water stream/waterfall setup. Pond Shield is the only product we could find - in such a big country?! 2. tough to apply. it worked well, despite tough application that must be applied by mixing & applied very fast or you waste whole mix as it hardens so fast. plus it's toxic smell & to touch. 3. questionable quality. though it works well for a while. it's unrealistic or weak in real world. ponds/streams/pools need to be cleaned. if you have many trees that shed leaves, water gets dirty fast. point is you empty the water structure much of the year. the sun dries the Pond Shield and cracks it. The coating therefore lifts from surface. the complaint about clear coat turning white: it dries clear, esp. if you do not apply too much. 4. too costly. for easy peel & the product being expensive to start with, plus having to re-purchase & re-coat, it's not professional enough, but profitable enough for manufacturer. it's too expensive for that. i would still recommend it, since it works for ca. 3/4-1 year & because there is no (clear coat) alternative (it seems). does anyone know of alternative product? opaque coating is easier to find - it would have to be a CLEAR coat alternative!

            Waste of money and time
If I could have given this a zero I would have. I ended up putting four coats on when you should have only had to put two coats on and it still leaked. So on the fifth application I decided to go to our local Glidden store and I got a product that came in a color because they didn't have anything in clear and it worked. After several months it has held water and still looks good. What a waste of water to see if this product would leak in between each application not to mention all the time it took to apply each one, wait the recommended time to dry before adding the water. We wanted to use clear to showcase the brick sides to our pond but ended up getting a green that turned out really nice after all. This was suppose to be an epoxy paint but according to the salesperson at Glidden it was not. The really bad thing is after applying you can't return it for a refund. What a waste of money.....

            Unhappy with product
The product mixed well and was applied according to instructions. After drying, we noticed that in certain areas, the product turned white. On closer examination, we found that the product lifted from the concrete surface and could be peeled off easily. So, we are unsure that we have a well sealed pond. Out of concern for the health of our KOI being held in a small tank, we filled our pond with water according to instructions listed and have released our KOI into it. They are healthy and water loss is at a minimum.
