As tall as the tree it came from. (But you rarely find anything greater than 16 feet)

my go to species of wood for most projects, poplar offers a upgrade to a hardwood without the up graded price, poplar is as easy to work with as pine. poplar holds paint and stain well. I personally like the color variation offered with poplar but If you don't and you want to stain the wood you may want to use a polyurethane and stain combo, the polyurethane and stain combo will lay on top of the wood and add color of the stain. with the color variation in the wood ranging from very pale like maple though deep tan to even a light green color, each color will soak in the stain differently and give you a different color. I usually choose to find the poplar with the most color variation throughout the board. if this is not your style try to find board with less color variation. Pros. I like to buy the board by the foot. I have much less waste this way. I usually take the measurement of each board needed and cut and buy board slightly longer then needed. I will combine measurement is they are under 4 or 5 feet into one board. cons: because home depot stocks very long boards that easy twist or bow, sometimes it is hard to find a good straight section

Wood stained very well and took two different colors that I used. I was able to screw through the wood without any cracks but only by using pilot holes. The wood does crack when screwed together without pilot holes drilled in advance

I bought three boards for the trim of a cabinet I’m making. The pocket screws did well on two of the boards, but the third cracked when the screw went in. I can patch and sand it since I intended to paint the trim anyhow, but it’s a step I’d rather not have to do.
