Do not buy. Not what they used to be.
I bought this model 12 years ago and installed 800 sq ft of 1/2 bamboo. No issues. Great hammer and nail gun. Sold it because no longer needed. Two years ago bought another Nail gun same model. Installed 300 sq ft of 3/4 oak. Gun worked good with no issues. Hammer is garbage, metal flakes off after just a few swings. Used 3 different porta nail hammers Are we’re all garbage same metal flaking issue. Started my last room, 500 sq ft to go. Nail gun broke after 50 sq ft. Ram would cycle up before completing the cycle and sinking the nail. Pawl or ram issues. Called company and parts are no longer available. They sent me a brand new nail gun with another crappy hammer. I was excited, new gun, get that floor completed. Well so I thought. New nail gun lasted 9 rows of flooring and once again would cycle up before sinking the nail completely. Porta nails the company said they are not making nail guns anymore. I did not purchase any of them through Home Depot

This was the first hardwood floor I installed and the rachet feature worked well especially when my swing was restricted. The nails were almost always set perfectly. The 402A is made in America which is great. I would not buy the 40225 face nail shoe however. It was difficult to control and I was better off drilling pilot holes and using finishing nails.

Had three bedrooms to put floor down in. roughly 400 sq feet. Before the first room was done the cast hammerhead was chipping. The second room went alright. The third room the ratcheting paw chipped so it will not lock to finish setting the nail. So that was a waste of $225 and having to rent a nailer to finish half of a room.

The ratcheting pawl broke halfway through the job. Made completion very difficult. Had used one before with no issues. Pawl appears to have been made using a sintered metal.

Used to reinstall 3/4" T&G Oak flooring with 1 1/2 T nails. I reviewed the difficulties reported in other reviews, but had none of those problems; mine worked flawlessly. The instructions are clear. The product is sturdy and the hammer was durable. I used a lightweight swing, which required 3-5 swings to drive the nail, but that drove the boards together tightly and there were no issues sinking the nails with multiple strokes, just keep your foot on the base until the nail is sunk, which is indicated when the nailer pops back out.

Was needed to disassembly it several times per 500 sq. feet to extract jammed nails, but overall experience is great. Manual nailing is easy. Disassembling and assembling also easy.

good deal
The nailer works fine, but the hammer is absolute garbage. The head came off within 1/2 hour, requiring another wedge. After using it to fasten approx. 60 sq. ft., the striking surface is mushrooming and small pieces are coming off. Not a good thing since I am installing pre-finished oak, I don't need metal chips laying around. Would have given this 5 stars otherwise. Good deal for the price.
