About This Product

For 18-years, Post Protector has provided simple, slide-on barrier protection for in-ground posts. It works in conjunction with the chemical preservative as an important additional layer of protection against soil-dwelling and atmospheric decay fungi and insect infestation. Its first important to understand decay. Many believe that moisture CAUSES decay. Moisture is not the cause of decay but is 1 of 3 conditions needed for decay to occur. The conditions: 1 Moisture, 2 Oxygen and 3 Suitable temperature. These conditions enable the soil-dwelling or atmospheric decay fungi, as well as termites and other subterranean insects, to feed on the wood fiber. So the Decay/Degradation of ground-contact wood is not CAUSED by moisture but by the action of wood destroying organisms feeding on the wood. The chemical preservatives protection strategy is to poison the wood fiber, rendering it an unsuitable food source for the wood destroying organisms. The downside to that approach is that all chemical preservatives eventually lose resistance to decay and insect infestation. Post Protector becomes the perfect complement to the pressure treated (or cedar) post by simply providing a physical barrier isolating the post so the wood-destroying organisms have NO access to the post.

Q:Could this be used with a true 6x6 from a lumber mill? Not a store bought 6x6 wich is not the size..

Answer This Question

A:  Please see the description for fit guide. The 6660 is made for surfaced 6x6 with a net size of 5-1/2 x 5-1/2. It will not stretch to accommodate custom or oversized lumber.

Q:take the felt cut to length, then leave 1-1/2' wider than the post 4×4 4×?, staple the 3/4"tab to the post and doing the same overlap to make it moisture resistant?

A:  No. Paper will not do the same thing and it will degrade much faster maybe 2 years if your lucky...

A:  This seems more of a suggestion than a question and to that-You won't see anyone considered a professional with a tar paper post wrap. Most folks who have the resources to spend $10,000 or more on a building(assuming this is a drive by comment and not really a question), want to protect the structure and Post Protectors are a no brainer when considering cost vs investment.

Q:Can it be used for Pergola post? Pergola is 8 ft high, how deep should this go under ground?

        Answer This Question

A:  The cover goes over the post and goes as deep as the hole is deep. I usually dig my holes 48” deep for pole barns. The covers stick up above the ground a few inches. Drill holes in bottom of cover for water drainage. Any excess above the ground you can cut off if you like.

A:  Are you designing your pergola to direct bury? Or are you mounting onto concrete? Post protectors are meant for direct ground contact. Depending on your location you'd probably want to have footings that extend past the frost line. Rule of thumb is 1/4 of the height (so for 8', you'd have 2ft minimum) Personally, I'd probably try to get at least 3.

A:  Yes we do have options but you will need to contact the manufacturer to make sure you get the right size and he will guide you.

A:  You can find specific size information on their web site. https://www.postprotector.com/literature/

A:  Yes, you just need to email post_protector@yahoo.com with your order confirmation and they swap them out. I called them and talked to Ken personally first and it was super easy. He is very helpful.

They do not fit the size of post they are designed
These things are way too tight and do not fit the post size they are designed for. I bought six of these for my 6x6 posts and all six I had to sand and plane all four sides of the post significantly just to get these to fit on. Even then they were tight and I had to use a flat steel tamper to smack the bottoms so they'd get on. Then the plastic crumples on itself and won't go on anymore. These do NOT fit. Not even with lube like they siggest. My posts were even smaller at 5-3/4" x 5-3/4" and I still had to belt sand them. Once it's wedged in its impossible to get off. I had to cut them off! For the premium you pay for this product, it does not deliver and requires far too much work. I lost over two days of work screwing around with these things. Make the sleeves the right size for the post you advertise them for! I'll give them a 1 star just because I know they'll do what they're supposed to do now that they are installed.

Just what I was looking for (I think)
I discovered that my post supporting an addition was rotted. Also of concern was that it was heaving during the coldest part of the winter (Vermont location). My hope is that this will prevent the heaving as it can slide slightly if the ground raises with frost. It will also help prevent ground contact which lead to the rotting of the previous post (even though it was pressure treated). Installation was easy. Won't really know how effective it is preventing rot for many years but the heaving typically happens in January so I will know in a few months. If it works well I have a second post to work on next year.

            Removable fence post application
I bought these with the idea to use them as sleeves for fence posts so I could remove the posts one day when they eventually rot without having to remove the concrete or dig new holes. They worked slendidly. A few posts weren't ar the right height so I was able to use a jack to lift them a few inches. If i were to do it again though I would use long shims between the posts and inside wall of the sleeve since they are rather flimsy vinyl and the concrete pushed them in a little too tight to the posts so I will definitely have trouble sliding in new posts in the future. I also forgot to cut the bottoms off so water doesn't collect in the sleeve. Read the insturctions, I guess!

            Rot prevention
I cut them in half (30in) and used to sleeve my 6x6 posts for a post frame building. They work good I was worried about the sleeves having a gap to let the posts shift. after packing the dirt back in there is no wiggle around them

Worked as expected - fit the 6x6 perfectly I chose not to drill the weep holes as instructions listed - seemed counter productive in my wet soil conditions.

Even pressure treated wood will rot. So I bought these because it takes 50 years to degrade plastic so I won't have to worry about the gate posts ever... a little extra thinking ahead will save a migraine later...

They fit well and were easy to install. I put silicone around the top edge to keep rain out. To early to tell if they will extend the life of the 6x6.
