Q:Can I use this roll to line barrel planter to prevent soil from leaking out BUT ensuring proper water drainage?
by|Jun 25, 2022

Answer This Question

A:  Hi LearningtoPlant, The roll should be sturdy enough to hold the soil, but excess water will only drain if it reaches above the plastic liner. The plastic liner covers 35.4" x 16" of the 40" x 20" roll. Most people like the water holding feature, but if needed you can poke small holes in the liner to allow for more drainage. Thanks!

A:  yes but you will end up with lots of waste very unhappy with this product.

A:  When I bought this product the only plastic was the outer packaging. Once open it is just coir in a sheet.

    by|Aug 5, 2021

A:  There are NO layers! Only woven coir.

      by|Apr 30, 2020

A:  sort of, I cut it open and removed the plastic and was left with two distinct layers. They held up pretty well, I'd say you'd be able to just fold them back together, I left them apart so I had one 40x80 piece

Q:Is coconut roll safe to use as a liner in plastic tray to grow microgreens?
          by|Apr 8, 2020

          Answer This Question

A:  I expected it to be a lot thicker. It’s difficult to get to spread out. I hope after all the work that it lasts longer than 1 year! I should have ordered 2 as I have 2 flower boxes (I’m hoping for several years use out of it!).

          by|May 20, 2020

A:  I believe it would not harm the microgreens, but I would not use Pride Garden Products 40 in. x 20 in. AquaSav Coco Roll because of the patented built-in water tray (a thin piece of what looks like plastic between the layers of coco fiber) may hold too much moisture. Home Depot does have coco fiber grow mats (Envelor Coco Seed Starter 8.4 lbs. Hydroponics Coir Fiber Microgreen Grow Mats 20-Pack). The mats are 10” x 20” and the only package I found listed has 20 mats. If you are just starting to grow microgreens, you might not want to spend $49.99. If you feel like doing a little DIY, you could get the Pride Garden Products 40 in. x 20 in. AquaSav Coco Roll and cut the pieces to fit the tray(s), then carefully separate the two sheets of coco fiber to reveal the “patented built-in water tray”. Gently remove the white sheet that feels like a thin plastic kitchen trash bag. Depending on how thick a pad you need you can use one or both halves. Another option would be to poke thin-chop-stick size holes through the "water tray" so water will drain evenly. The rest of the roll can be used in hanging baskets, flower boxes, etc. Here are a couple websites that have information about grow medium choices for microgreens: https://www.bootstrapfarmer.com/blogs/microgreens/how-to-grow-microgreens about half way down the web page: GROW MEDIUM CHOICES FOR MICROGREENS https://www.bootstrapfarmer.com/blogs/microgreens/hydroponic-pad-selection-for-microgreens about a quarter way down the web page is info about different growing media for microgreens.

            Answer This Question

A:  This is not made to protect wood. ANY porous is not your answer! Cedar itself is used in wet environs, even for fence posts, so just use a few sheets of newspaper to keep the soil in place until it stabilizes and plant away.

            by|Mar 31, 2020

A:  The Pride Garden Products 40 in. x 20 in. AquaSav Coco Roll has a layer of plastic that runs down the middle. The plastic between the layers of fiber is used to help maintain moisture for plants between watering. But the plastic is only in the center of the 20 inches. I don't currently have a roll so I can't tell you how wide the plastic is between the fiber layers, but it did not go to the edges. The video only show the liner for hanging baskets, not the liners for window/deck planters (long & narrow ones). You said your cedar planter box is 4 1/2 feet (54 inches) long, coco roll is 36 in. long. The planter is 2 ft. or 24 in. high plus 16 in. deep, but the coco roll is only 20 inches wide. You will need 2 or more rolls and have to cut several. With patching the fiber liner in the planter box there would be several places where water will come in contact with the wood. I would consider a different method. Whichever method you choose be sure to make an opening through the holes in the box. There are several YouTube ideas and how to line with plastic. You can search “waterproof liner for planter box” or “how to line a wooden planter box.” Good luck.

My tomatoes are really liking this
I cut this and placed it in the bottom of redwood planters http://www.homedepot.com/p/Hollis-Wood-Products-22-in-Square-Redwood-Planter-Box-12028/204371110. I transplanted some tomato seedlings to the planters and they are growing beautifully. It is obvious the coco roll is holding onto more moisture as I don't have to water as often (I live in So Cal where it is hot and dry). Very pleased with this and now I wish I had put it in the bottom of all my containers!

Difficult to cut and fit to different planters. Not very manageable if it's not rolled out flat on the ground or simply laid flat in a planter.
