After reading info on these two products, it seems they are identical except for the size of container. Both are used for the same purpose, so it appears they are the same, performing the same purpose of cleaning the water softener brine tank.

You are supposed to add it to the resin. I have a portable water softener with a filter on the input. I remove the filter, add the resin care to the empty filter housing, and trickle the water through for about 30 minutes. Then a short high volume flush, reinstall the filter, and resume water softening.
No. When used according to directions. I would not drink it straight.
Res Care is a third party resin cleaner. You need 1/2 cup per 30,000 grains of resin, so you'll need slightly more than 4 oz. per treatment. Res Care is potable, so I don't believe that it can hurt your Whirlpool system, so give it a try!
