How flat do they stay? How much needs to be buried?

Asked by Bk April 13, 2021

Answer

The aluminum edging is an excellent choice for straight runs and curves. It is flexible, so if not installed correctly, it can bow with weight of traffic on a walkway. We don't typically suggest this product for a paver or walkway edging. It should be buried at least 2-2.5" in the ground, and the soil should be firmly packed on each side of the edging in order to make installation as sturdy as possible. Again, if you are looking for a paver or walkway edging, we recommend a paver edging, instead of the aluminum edging.

We recommend to use no less than 2 pieces of edging to create a tree ring, installed at full length. This would create a ring approximately 3 feet in diameter once the edging pieces are connected. If you try to bend the edging to create a tighter circle, it can cause kinking and cracking in the edging pieces.

The edging can be bent. Corner connectors are available to make the process easier, though. They have the same sliding connection system as the slats.

Hi Mary, the aluminum edging has been very popular this season. Due to the unusual circumstances in the past few months, we cannot guarantee an in-stock date. You can sign up for an in-stock notice on the product page. When the edging is back in stock online, you will receive an email from Home Depot.

You can put in your email and Home Depot will let you know when it is back in stock. I did that and got an email 3 days later. I ordered it and had it a week later.

Do you need to order the anchor spikes? Or does it come with them?

It Came Out Perfect
I don't usually use edging in my gardens, but decided I had to in this case because my condo's ground crew is out of control with their weed whackers (they cut off plants and even turn my metal garden stakes into pretzels). I was dreading this project and thought it would take all afternoon, but it only took an hour and a half (for a 40' border) and I had fun doing it!!! It looks great, and I don't even like edging, as a rule. I'm very glad I decided to spring for the metal edging (people seem to have big problems with the cheaper plastic stuff). I followed the directions (many reviewers of this product clearly didn't) and also paid attention to tips that competent reviewers wrote. I will emphasize these and add couple tips of my own. 1) Properly prepare the border where the edging is going. Doing this will save time and headache later. Cut your curves or straight lines as perfectly as you can, and make sure one side is nicely vertical, leaving a trench on the other side. 2) Connect all the sections in advance and in a clean area, like a lawn or driveway. I think trying to connect them as you go would be a major problem. 3) Even if your connections have a good four inches or more overlap, as mine did, tape them together before moving the edging "ribbon". Doing this keeps them from sliding apart, and you can either remove the tape later, or tape it where it will be buried. I thought it might be hard to move my 40' "ribbon" into position, but it turned out to be easy, and the edging conformed to my curve naturally. 4) Backfill a little bit, between the spike holes and pack it so the edging is secured into place, before driving in the spikes.

Aligning and inserting the sections together is somewhat tedious but if you are patient, the sections slide together. I strongly recommend putting all the sections together that you will need for your entire bed since aligning and sliding sections together after the pieces are in the dirt will be next to impossible. Another tip is if you have or can borrow a power edger or bed definer it will create a perfect trench to insert the edging while avoiding the back-breaking labor of using a straight spade to do this. The product is significantly less expensive if you don’t need a color.

The product worked well for our purposes, we will be ordering more. The most difficult part is getting them connected, sliding one end into the end of another. For longer runs, we put several together at a time, it would be really difficult to do it on the ground.

Been getting these over the years for edging all around the House. These last ones seemed a bit thinner than in years past. But, I like them. Takes time if you want to get them nice and straight for a long run. Easy to cut and bend. These go by different names. "Easy Flex" Pro Flex" but they all look the same.

This edging looks great. I used it for a rock path between houses. I read other reviews and agree, it is much easier to slide the pieces together when they are lying flat. I recommend overlapping the pieces more than the suggested 4” until you get it into position. It was easy to secure the edging in curved position. The stakes are a good length. This edging is so much nicer than the plastic kind. I would have given 5 stars if longer sections were available. These pieces are 6’ but you lose 4” for overlap. I would like an 8’ length option.

Thank you for your feedback and user tips! We appreciate your comments and will definitely let our product development group know about the length. Although the overlap is necessary for the product to function properly, it does impact the total length of the installation. As we revise and develop user reference materials, your comments will be helpful. Thank you again! DimexProducts

Zoysia grass is known for its long runners. These runners kept popping up in my mulched flower beds. So previously I bought 6 boxes (6 x 24 feet) which have been in place for over 2 years (see pict). They still look great. The grass occasionally still tunnels under the 4" edging, but it is easy to pull up 1 or 2 runners where before it was literally dozens. Recently I extended one 24' run further in the back yard to help keep that area clean of runners. This is high quality and easy to install, but more importantly it will last and keep its shape. You will never get as clean a line or curve with typical rubber or vinyl edging. If you want pro-quality look and feel, this is the best option. The only down side is that it costs over $40 to do 24 linear feet (hence the 4 stars). You get what you pay for, it 'ain't' cheep, but it is worth it. (Someday I hope to do the whole yard, but for now the front looks great)

This is the second time I purchased this edging. It is very strong and easy to use. The pieces slide together and are very easy to form into the shape you need. I've used this to make square bends and curves with no problem. Very sturdy. Had some issues with the packaging the first order but none since and all the items were included in both shipments. I recommend this landscape edging.

I would have given this product 5 stars, BUT on my last order 2 of the 3 edging boxes I received did not have the anchoring spikes. Called Home Depot customer service a week ago...they were supposed to call the manufacturer for replacement parts. Called HD today....call to manufacturer never placed. I will be calling the manufacturer in Ohio tomorrow. Product works great. I am using it to build track support for an LGB outdoor train. I recommend ordering the box of 100 steel landscape 12" spikes at the same time. And why should we buy American?????
