QEP Cork Plus Underlayment is an environmentally friendly product made up of cork, a renewable resource, and recycled EVA foam. This cork underlayment is naturally hypoallergenic, mold, and mildew resistant. The recycled EVA foam is unused material generated in the production of shoes, which reduces the disposal of this non-degrading material into landfills. QEP Cork Plus products are intended for indoor, commercial use and may contribute towards satisfying credits under the LEED Green Building Program.

  • Provides acoustical sound control and cushioning for softer, quieter footfalls

Q:Why is it not recommended to use under vinyl planks? I'm trying to get something to put down to reduce sound from a 2nd floor early 1900's hotel with a wood sub floor and little to no insulation between floors.

    Answer This Question

A:  Always follow the Vinyl manufacturer's specific installation guidelines. Underlayment recommendation will specify any usage, thickness and properties requirement. Most likely, 6mm is too thick or your vinyl may have a pre-attached pad. If your flooring choice does not have a pre-attached pad, you may want to consider Roberts sound barricade 70-197. Q:If this is used under engineered hardwood flooring, Malibu 1/2" thick, can I nail down through this product into subfloor, or would I have to glue each board one to another?
      by|Mar 4, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  This Cork Plus product is specifically designed for floating or glue-down installations of engineered wood flooring material and can not be mechanically fasted. Roberts 1550 is warranted for a full surface glue down to the cork and substrate (double bond) If floating over the Cork Plus, 1406 can be used a Tongue and Grove adhesive for bonding T&G.

The QEP Cork Plus underlayment sheets are a useful product. As a use as an underlayment the product feels sturdy and supportive with not too much give (who likes a squishy floor?). The product is very flexible, as I was almost able to fold it completely over on itself before it start to feel like it was going to break. At this price point, for 5 sheets of 2ft x 3ft, you could also use this as cork board for message boards and what not as well as many DIY and creative type projects.

When I saw this QEP 30 sq. ft. 2 ft. Wide X 3 ft. Long X 6 mm Thick Cork Plus Underlayment Sheets (5-Pack), I knew 30 square feet was not enough material to do any floor in my house. However, the 6 mm thickness was very close to the 5 mm height of the roadbed on my model railroad layout and cork is often used as model railroad roadbed. These 2 ft. by 3 ft. sheets would be enough to handle a fairly large model railroad yard if I could adjust for the 1 mm height difference. Then, a few weeks ago we started building an 8 ft. X 12 ft. Storage Shed for my wife's arts and crafts supplies that has a nice 92 inch by 24 inch benchtop at one end of the shed. I thought "Wow! What a great place to put a layer of cork underlayment as a nicer benchtop than the rough OSB provided in the shed kit." Consequently, a little more than half of this package of cork underlayment will become her new benchtop and the rest will eventually find its way into my train layout. It's very nice material. The fact that it's a combination of cork and recycled EVA foam rubber makes it much more flexible and resilient than plain cork. The color is also a pleasant medium brown that goes well with our intended uses. I know this is supposed to used as floor underlayment, but I think our uses are just as good. I plan to glue the cork to the benchtop once we're finished painting the shed interior.

I found the 1/4" thick cork plus underlayment useful for sound deadening purposes when installing laminant flooring but can also be used with ceramic tile, wood flooring and other floating flooring systems. When using underneath laminant flooring it is best to put down a vapor barrier first then the cork. The sheets of cork can be taped together using duct tape or other tapes that offer some shear strength to form a continuous sheet of cork. Also keep in mind this cork is a hybrid with some recycled EVA foam rubber fused into the natural cork which gives it a bit more springiness. Overall I am quite pleased with the quality and performance of the underlayment sheets.

I honestly never heard of Cork being used as an underlayment. I would be skeptical in tiling over this. Cause i feel that the cork would soak up all the moister and deteriorate. I glued magnets to these and used these as good old fashioned cork board for my children to hang up projects. A tact easily sticks into it. It is hypoallergenic and is made for indoor use only. You can rip it with your hands pretty easily and you can stick a finger through it pretty easy. I would do more research on using it as an underlayment,.

One of the best solutions I've found for sound control. This cork underlayment is 6mm thick and is mildew and mold resistant and it provides a nice underfoot feel yet is still dense enough to stop tiles from cracking. The cork is combined with little chunks of foam which makes it more flexible and less likely to break apart. You can use with any motor or thinset for tile or stone installation and also can be used with engineered hardwood flooring. I would not use this with vinyl planks as it may be just a bit too squishy for those thin flexible panels. Each sheet is 2'x3' and 6mm thick and comes flat in a carton.

This cork underlayment has good resilience and gives good cushion while providing support under laminate flooring. The size is cut exact at 2 feet by 3 feet giving a pack of 5 pieces 30 square feet of coverage. It is rated for use under tile, laminate, and hardwood flooring. If you have any unevenness in your subfloor greater than 1/8 of an inch, don't expect this cork to level it out. It is dense enough that imperfections may follow through to the finish flooring. This is not solid cork sheet, it has ground up foam rubber to add resilience to it.

QEP 30 sq. ft. 2 ft. Wide x 3 ft. Long x 6 mm Thick Cork Plus Underlayment Sheets (5-Pack) The QEP 30 sq. ft. 2 ft. Wide x 3 ft. Long x 6 mm Thick Cork Plus Underlayment Sheets are designed primarily as an underlayment material for a variety of flooring materials in an indoor application, both residential and commercial. It is easy to handle and can be applied with either tape or glue. The cork is great for adding cushioning and sound-proofing. We are planning an alternative application. We have a dining table that also doubles as a craft/project center. We keep the surface covered to prevent damage from spills, but the top is still open to dents and chipping. We will use the cork to pad the top of the table to help reduce the chance of damage. It will also be used on a gaming table to again, add cushioning and add soundproofing to the room.

I needed something flexible to apply to the walls of an above ground, steel storm shelter. This QEP cork underlayment looked like the perfect solution. The panels are very high quality. They're 3'x2' (6 sq ft) and about a 1/4" thick. The hold together well and don't crack or break when bent. That was important to me because the walls of my shelter are round. I applied a spray adhesive to the area on the shelter wall where the cork was to be placed and also on one side of the cork. Then it was just a matter of placing it on the wall. The cork panels conform perfectly to the shape of the shelter wall. I only had enough to cover about 40% of the total interior wall surface area but it makes a tremendous amount of difference in the sound levels in side the shelter. Sound and vibration are dramatically reduced. The QEP cork underlayment panels work exactly as advertised (even though I used them in a non-traditional way). Another important aspect of using this product is it's intended for indoor use. It doesn't give off harmful vapors and it uses recycled products. Great value, great product.
