A: The recommended size trowel depends on the size of the tile. The QEP 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/2" sq trowel is used for natural stone, quarry, pavers, saltillo and ceramic tiles up to 12" x 12" and larger. Customer Care

A: Yes. Smaller notches may also work. Generally, size of notches determines how much mortar is under the tile. Final height of mortar, after tile is placed, is one half the notch height, so for a floor you might adjust mortar height for alignment of tile with adjoining flooring. You can also adjust height of mortar by the angle of holding the trowel - 45 degrees versus 90 degrees, which changes mortar thickness. Good idea to set one tile and then lift it to inspect fir proper mortar coverage.
