Smith’s Environmental is owned by the Swan Group and American company based in Massachusetts. This product is manufactured from globally sourced components in their factory in Chelmsford, England. The factory is about a one-hour drive North East of London.

Most heating zones in the US are piped using ¾” tube because of it is capable 45,000 BTUs per hour at 180 F vs 1/2” which can only carry 12,000 BTUs. So that you don’t reduce the capacity of the entire ¾ zone by installing a ½” appliance in the series, scoop aka monoflo tees are used to pipe a ½” loop off the ¾” loop. If you are replacing an old 1/2 “ kick space, heater that worked, I would assume you already have this piping configuration and would not need scoop tees to replace the ones you have. But then again, I am not certain of what piping methodology you have based on the information you have provided. You are welcome to give me a call, and we can get into more specifics. The way the questions are routed to me I cannot see your picture. But as I have received calls in the past, I will assume you are questioning why the copper is either green or black. The fabrication of the coils involves brazing. This process utilizes high heat and flux; an acid. This process will discolor the copper and can even turn it green in the time it takes the units to get from the factory in England to your home. This poses no problem, other than raising concern in the mind of some customers. It does not indicate that that the product has been used or is defective. And the oxidation will not continue or accelerate. The water in a hydronic heating system does not contain oxygen. The air is eliminated, and the same water is used for long periods of time. Boiler water may look dirty but it is noncorrosive due to the lack of oxygen. Yes. If you look at the pictures carefully you will see a switch in the face plate. It has three fan speed settings. High, Low and Off.

Under the pictures on the Home Depot product listing page is a section entitled “Product Details”. If you expand that section, you will find PDFs of the product documents, including the installation instructions. The are essentially three companies that make hydronic kick space heaters. Myson, Mestek which markets there product under several brand names including Hydro Therm, Beacon Morris and Turbonics and Smiths Environmental which calls its product Quiet One. It’s a small category and in my opinion, I think all the brands have poor instruction, although all installations are different. After reviewing them if you have any questions feel free to give me a call. In the old days plumbers would hard pipe these in copper. Then install the cabinets. But then when the unit needed repair or maintenance you ended up having to cut the floor out of the base cabinet above to gain access. Hence the creation of hosed kits for the last few feet. This allows you to unscrew the Quiet One unit and pull them out from under the cabinet to service. In what I consider the best installation I have ever seen the installing contractor put draw slides on the side of the unit so it could be pulled out and serviced. Yes, you can install this kick space heater in the vertical position. In fact, when it is installed in the optional wall kit, The KSWK it would be mounted in a vertical position. However, I would not install it in a floor as the grill is not built to be walked on. For a floor application I would use the FL100 floor unit.
