Answer

QUIKRETE® Polyurethane Mortar Joint Sealant is suitable for filling the ½ inch to ¾ inch joint between the brick steps and front porch slab. Make sure that the joint joint is clean, sound, dry, frost free, unsealed/uncoated, and free of any dust, loose debris, oils, grease, and any other potential bond breakers. The fill depth should not be less than 1/4 inch deep and should not exceed 1/2 inch. The width of the joint should be at least 1/8 inch (ideally 1/4 inch). For best results, the ratio of joint width to joint depth should be 2 to 1. The use of QUIKRETE® Backer Rod (No. 6917) is recommended to help prevent three sided adhesion and reducing the depth to fill. Wear impervious gloves when applying polyurethane.

What is the lowest temperature this product can be used? How long does it take it to cure?

Asked by Curious November 7, 2017
1
Answer

The temperature must be at least 40 °F, but no warmer than 95 °F when applying QUIKRETE® Polyurethane Mortar Joint Sealant. At 75 °F and 50% relative humidity, it will be tack-free in 2 hours, and fully cured in 5-8 days. Low humidity, cooler temperatures and non-porous substrates will lengthen these times. When using sealants, getting a good color match can be difficult - we always recommend trialing a small quantity of the sealant in an inconspicuous area, and allowing it to cure for several hours to determine whether the color and overall appearance are acceptable before initiating full project.

Asked by Legend December 9, 2016

Answer

No, QUIKRETE® Polyurethane Mortar Joint Sealant is not heat resistant and should not be subjected to temperatures over 195 degrees Fahrenheit after the material has fully cured. You may consider using QUIKRETE® Fireplace Mortar (No.8620-21) that is designed for repairing damaged firebrick and pointing mortar joints in the fireplace. Easy to use
I had typical cracks in poured concrete basement wall. Concrete always shrinks during curing and unless it has a lot of rebar and prepared expansion joints, it will crack randomly in a pour that has more than 8' in any direction. The cracks usually go all the way through a typical 6 to 8" concrete wall pour so any water outside will enter and follow the crack coming out in the basement at the lowest point on the crack. There are several similar products in Home Depot for this. I chose this one. I followed the instructions chiseling out the hair line cracks to make a larger bed for the caulk using a small air hammer with flat chisel bit. Wear goggles. Not just safety glasses. Wear dust mask - silicone dust from sand in concrete. I used a hand sprayer to spray on dilute muriatic acid, brushed, then power washed out the crack to remove loose material. The basement was empty and I wanted to wash it all anyway before painting. I calked cracks working material into the crack with the tip of the tube. I let it cure 3 days as required before covering with DriLoc Latex water proof paint. (Don't use standard airless sprayer. The bucket has recommendation.) RESULTS: It rained 2" next week. I usually get a little water with a 2" rain but so far no leaking at all.

Works great with caution.
You better have a good calk gun for this stuff it is thick coming out out of the tube. Ware gloves and stay off while it cures it tuff to get out of carpets. Kids don't know any better.

Very High Quality
I actually purchased this product to use inside my home on some wood siding projects. After seeing how well it set-up, and how sturdy, yet pliable it was, I decided to purchase more for all my projects. While it is slightly difficult to extract from the tube because of its thickness, it is well worth it. It is clear once used, that this product is very high quality, and I am extremely pleased.

Very poor chimney repair product
Weather was in mid-fifties today. I had planned for such a day to touch up crack in my chimney. Purchase a couple Quikrete Mortar Joint Sealer this morning. At lunch time got all my tools together and climbed up the chimney on my ranch house. This sealer was disappointing. After finishing the prep work, I inserted the stuff in my caulk gun, however it was virtual impossible to get this sealer to come out. I'm a man of average strength, and this was nutty. Also once a little bit would come out, it did not spread that well. I could not find and expiration date on the tube, and perhaps this product is only good for use in very warm weather. This stuff should be indicated on the tube. I would strongly advise anyone interesting in using this item to find some other way to fix any repair problems with a chimney.
