In regards to filling in "bug holes", my concrete was formed with sonotubes came out with a lot of bug holes from trapped air in the tube and I am trying to determine the best product to use to easily fill the holes (as well as color match). Based on videos, this product seems to be thick and gritty when it is mixed and applied to surfaces. Is the this product my best option or is there another recommended product?
Asked by: CB
If I understand your question, you're asking about filling holes in a poured concrete column that have "Bug Holes" in them and you're inquiring whether this product would be a good match for you to fill the holes. Yes, it would fill the holes although using it would make your patched spots on your columns have a different color and feel than the original material used. Not sure I would like that. The finished color is a darkish grey and yes, it is somewhat gritty (but not overly so). In both instances where used, I found it helpful to go over the applied cement with a slightly wet paint brush to make it smoother. In one project I painted over a stairwell wall after the cement had dried and it's not gritty at all now. However, I think I would try first to match the original material the columns were poured with. Just my two cents!

Can this product be used to patch cracks and holes in the joints of a stone retaining wall that was built with mortar?
Asked by: RetainingWallChuck
I am by no means an expert on concrete matters and can only give you my DIY experience with this product. After doing much research on what I thought would work in my situation I ended up purchasing the Quikkrete Fast Set Repair Mortar. I wanted to repair the vertical stairwell walls that lead to my basement which are located in the unheated interior of my back porch. The original walls appeared to be cement block (?) in some areas, with concrete (?) smeared over stone in other areas which had been painted over several times. The first thing I was advised to do was remove as much of the paint as possible to get good adhesion and because the walls were so uneven with large dips, humps and valleys, I used a grinding wheel to level every thing off as best I could which also removed a good portion of the paint. Not perfect but definitely better than when I started. Once I had the walls ready to go, I used the fast set mortar to fill in the dips and level everything. Because the mortar sets up quickly (about 15 minutes) I worked in small batches making sure to not add too much water. It needed to be thick enough to adhere to the vertical walls, which it did by troweling it on, then I worked at leveling it off and before it set up too much, I used a large paint brush to smooth the surface even more. It was a lengthy process and I needed way more of the mortar mix than I first calculated, but it's finished now, and I am very pleased with the results. In my opinion this product should work well on your retaining wall. If it were me, I would at least give it a try.

As long as it doesn't freeze. Sets quicker in temps 50-70 with some sun. I used this recently when temps almost hit freeze so its still soft. Great product even for a first time user like me!

I needed to re-attach decorative tiles that were hanging vertically off the end of an outside deck. They were 3" x 12" tiles so my worry was that gravity would have an impact when reinstalling them. With some online research, this product seemed to be the best one for this task so I bought it. I couldn't be happier with my decision. Since this has a limited working time of about 15 minutes, it was great that I could mix small batches as my repair required positioning and repositioning of a latter making it impossible to make all the repairs in one batch. My first batch was mixed to a consistency of peanut butter and when the tile was placed, gravity had no affect. My second batch mixed to a consistency of mayonnaise and, in this case, gravity tried to pull the tiles down. But by physically holding them in place and/or a little help from some masking tape, they held just fine. In the end, all re-attached tiles (probably about 12) held firm within 30 -40 minutes. This was a great solution.

The material overall, is very good but we noticed that when we dug into the material after it settled, the middle portion was dry and it appered as if it was not mixed with water. This is the material is possible designed only to be used as a plaster or for cover up not to fill a void.Ben

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice product I used this on my concrete stoop so it was a vertical application. Followed the directions and i was very pleased with the results. I would recommend only working in small areas as they are not lying it does set fast so do not mix too much at once. It can be "molded" as it states which was helpful in filling in hard to reach places using a putty knife or trowel. I also used quikrete bonding adhesive and quikrete crack filler. before applying this product. Product comes dry in 2 separate bags and i used all of it on a roughly 10' X 4' X 20" high stoop. I'll have to see how it holds up after a harsh winter but as for now product as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good stuff for most repairs I had a driveway slab that settled unevenly. There was a 1" drop at the outer corner of one slab. Every time I used my snowblower, it caught the front edge of the housing and it ticked me off, so I decided to fix it. This stuff is a cment based product with a bonding agent already added. It sticks well, but you want to keep the edges on you repair at least 1/8" thick, no feather edging. If you want to have a feather edged repair, you should be looking at a 2 part epoxy product instead of a cement based product like this. I used my angle grinder to grind down the area at the edge of my intended patch to maintain a 1/8" depth of repair material, and it worked very well. You DO need to have all your prep work done, and all your tools at hand before mixing this stuff. You have only 20 minutes, no more! Like a Boy Scout, you need to be prepared. Make sure you have a very good mix, and have the repair area dampened. I used a very thin mixed slurry of the material to brush on to the repair area before mixing the main batch of fill material. Once you do mix it up, use a trowel or a gloved hand to push the material into the repair area, this will ensure a good bond with the old concrete.. Leave enough material (and time) to finish and smooth it off with a trowel. My repair turned out very nicely. It is a bit darker than the original concrete, but it may fade in time, no big deal anyway. The repair seems to be very well bonded, but this winter, the snowblower will be the acid test!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! Best in Class! Used as directed, this Fast-Set Mortar Repair works like it's supposed to. I used it in place of plastering my garage wall, to fill the joints of the wallboard repair, then to texture to match the surrounding areas. Looks great, adheres vertically well, without dripping or clumping off, and generally works as represented.
