Q:I have exposed foundation that is pitting on the outside. Will this work to smooth that out- and can it be painted?

      Answer This Question

A:  QUIKRETE® Sand/Topping Mix is not suitable for vertical applications. We recommend instead QUIKRETE® Mason Mix for your project, which can be painted after 7 days with a water based acrylic paint, or after 28 days with an oil based paint.

I have an OLD house along with an OLD concrete driveway. I have used all sorts of fillers and they all worked well, but they were usually more involved to apply. The Quikrete topper simply pour on top of crack sweep in it in a little wet it down and presto crack is fixed. I do not imagine it will last as long as some of the other products but for the price and ease of use,....totally worth it.

concrete mix not sand topping mix
Buyer beware! I bought 4 bags last week and just opened them to discover concrete mix (i.e. rocks and cement) instead of simply sand and cement. I purchased the same sand topping mix three weeks prior and it was just sand and cement. This is frustrating as the sand topping mix is significantly more expensive than concrete mix and I need sand topping (not concrete) for my project. This is a QUIKRETE mistake, not a Home Depot mistake.

            stones in mix
We bought this product thinking that the label was correct in saying it was sand and cement. We used it for the bedding of the shower floor, and wanted it to be pretty precise. But there was actually a significant amount of larger stones, that was very frustrating when we wanted to add a fraction of an inch, and the trowel really had a problem with them. We ended up having to screen the dry mix first, to get out those stones (see picture). Then to keep the proportions right, we added some clean playground sand in equal amounts to the stone volume that we screened out. Mixture worked well then. Gave it a 2 because if the stones

I did a bathroom shower subfloor with the quikrete sand/topping mix and it was easier to work with as compared to thin set mortar that was used on the first layer. The sand/topping mix set up time was slower than the thin set which helped a novice like me to get it level on the perimeter with a 1/4" per foot grade to the drain. It blended well when leveling and filling in voids etc. I mixed the first batch dryer (which worked well) than the second batch. The second batch might have been mixed too wet because the top surface was pretty wet and shiny. I'll see if that didn't affect the surface integrity when it dries.

                Finally Finished it
I have been slowly purchasing this concrete for the last several months working on this sidewalk. After about 40 bags and a stronger back I was able to finish the walkway to my shop from the house. No more tracking mud in the house when I am grilling or letting the dog out. I probably have another 200 feet to go to finish out the yard, but I am in no rush. This stuff mixes easily and is forgiving in a wide temperature range. Within an hour or two, depending on the weather, it is dry enough to stand up to afternoon showers in Georgia.

                Great for a shower base
I did a concrete shower base on a rubber bladder for the shower floor in my basement bathroom. A fraction of the cost of so called specialty mixes from over priced tile stores. I added my own Fibermesh and poured it at about a 2-3" slump. No cracks or leaks 5 years layer. The sand mix grades down to the drain better than conventional mixes with large aggregates . This sand mix just has the cement and fine sand in it.Perfect . I'm doing another one in the upstairs master bath . Concrete shower bases are nice because you can custom make them any size or design you want..SO EASY !

Product was excellent to work with. Working and blending results were better than I had expected. Allow several days to cure . I would buy again.
