Questions & Answers

can I use this for a shower floor?

I would like to use a smooth concrete to finish my shower floor. What product would be best and will I need to seal it ?
Asked by: rixlake
I know this is an old post, but just in case anyone else is wondering... You have to make a 'pre slope' - the use a PVC pan liner- the make actual slope, then lay thinset - then tile Deck mud is porous on purpose, so If/when water seeps though your grout, it hits the pan liner (which is sloped by the 'pre-slope') and water is drawn to the weep holes in your drain. The actual slope is for your tile, so water is drawn to the drain when you are taking a shower. both pan slopes should be made out of 'deck mud' this is 5 parts sand 1 part portland cement. A 30 lb bag of sand can be added to to a 60lb bad of quikrete sand/ topping mix to achieve a 5:1 ratio. Look up a product called 'quick pitch', That's what I used on my first bathtub to tiled shower remodel. plenty of youtube videos that demonstrate how to use this system.

Can sand topping be brushed on dry and then dampened to repair patio mortar joints

Asked by: JK
Well you have an usual approach to fixing those pesky open joints! I think you have a great idea there. However the 60lb. sand/topping mix might not be the best product to use. I'd use one of the Home Depot mortar mixes. A mix for mortar creates a softer joint fill that is more forgiving of future cracking. I'm not sure how well the in-place mortar mixing will top out the joint, however. You may end up mixing a small batch of mortar then tuck-pointing the joints to leave a level surface. And let us know how it turns out!

I did a bathroom shower subfloor with the quikrete sand/topping mix and it was easier to work with as compared to thin set mortar that was used on the first layer. The sand/topping mix set up time was slower than the thin set which helped a novice like me to get it level on the perimeter with a 1/4" per foot grade to the drain. It blended well when leveling and filling in voids etc. I mixed the first batch dryer (which worked well) than the second batch. The second batch might have been mixed too wet because the top surface was pretty wet and shiny. I'll see if that didn't affect the surface integrity when it dries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for a shower base I did a concrete shower base on a rubber bladder for the shower floor in my basement bathroom. A fraction of the cost of so called specialty mixes from over priced tile stores. I added my own Fibermesh and poured it at about a 2-3" slump. No cracks or leaks 5 years layer. The sand mix grades down to the drain better than conventional mixes with large aggregates . This sand mix just has the cement and fine sand in it.Perfect . I'm doing another one in the upstairs master bath . Concrete shower bases are nice because you can custom make them any size or design you want..SO EASY !
