Questions & Answers

What color does this mortar dry grey or tan?

Asked by: Fk
QUIKRETE® Masonry Cement will dry predominately gray, but the final color will be impacted by the color of sand used. We always recommend to trial the material in a small, discrete area first and wait 24 hours to ensure that the appearance, including color, is acceptable. Be sure to verify your satisfaction of the appearance before initiating your full scale project.

do the three on hand types of quickrete sand have different advantages?

Asked by: jack
QUIKRETE® All Purpose Sand is a properly graded coarse sand to be utilized for a variety of purposes such as mixing with Portland cement and gravel to make concrete, underlayment for brick pavers, traction on snow and ice, and mixing with potting soil. QUIKRETE® Pool Filter Sand, is designed for use in pool filters and has a typical predominant size range of #20 to #40, or 0.85 to 0.425 mm. QUIKRETE® Premium Play Sand (No.1113) is safe for use in sand boxes intended for children’s use – this is the sand we recommend for mixing masonry mortars and for creating habitats for wildlife. Most of the sand grains for QUIKRETE® Premium Play Sand are 1/8” and smaller and there is fine material. The gradations can vary somewhat based upon region.

I'm interested in using this product to create concrete countertops. Would this be a material you'd recommend to be used for that purpose?
Asked by: Trumpp
QUIKRETE® Countertop Mix (No. 110680 - Gray or No. 110681 - Tint-Base) is the product we would recommend using for a concrete countertop as it is a flowable, high strength commercial grade product designed specifically for use in forming concrete countertops. It is easier to finish the surface of the countertop if QUIKRETE® Countertop Mix (No. 110680 - Gray or No. 110681 - Tint-Base) is utilized. Note that the tint-base is not a pure white. If your local The Home Depot store does not routinely stock the QUIKRETE® Countertop Mix, you may have them special order. A minimum skill level of intermediate is required for a basic concrete countertop (i.e. simple rectangular shape, no sink cut outs, etc.) while an advanced skill level is required if any added detailing is included in the design.

is this and sand what I want to use to install stacked slate veneer over my red brick porch?

Asked by: budman
QUIKRETE® Polymer Modified Stone Veneer Mortar (No. 1137-85) or QUIKRETE® Stone Veneer Mortar (No. 1137-80) would typically be recommended for stone veneer applications. Both of these are Type S Masonry Mortars - one with polymer modification, one without. . It is typically recommended to apply a scratch coat to provide a surface that will provide mechanical keying for the bond coat placed on the stones. Please review local building codes to determine if additional steps are needed for your project.
