Questions & Answers

Where is the "Planer" function?

This machine looks like a Jointer to me. Normally Jointer/Planers have two separate functions that require the machine to be reconfigured to change between one function and the other. While this machine does have the jointer capability, I don't see the capability to perform the planing function, in which the thickness of the piece of wood can be accurately controlled by running it between rollers.

I would "assume" they mean plane a EX: 1x6 on it's face, we know it's not a planer just as you stated

when was the last time this product was available at home depot

intrested in picking one up
Asked by: Ken
I bought one on line on February 9 (2019). There seems to be far more demand than supply for this item and the holdup appears to be somewhere in the supply chain, a problem of which RIDGID (I'm told) is working and about which RIDGID is trying to do something to alleviate. I had to wait MONTHS after buying one and having to return it (it worked flawlessly for 6 weeks, but due to a screw-up by someone in product assembly which left the product unregisterable ... hence the return since I wanted the lifetime warranty), and having assembled it yesterday (in under 3 hours, no helper) it runs just as flawlessly as the first one I had. (And this one had the same snafu with the serial number plate but this time someone in customer service helped me and it is now registered successfully so I have the lifetime warranty. I'd update my original review but that isn't possible... sigh.)

are blades reversable?
Asked by: hawkeye
no, are also not indexed so can be sharpened as the expensive of a more difficult blade change. are a few magnetic jigs on the market to help set the blades, but even so i tend to let mine get way past dull before i finally change them as its a bit of a chore.

Ordered on-line and set up in store pickup. It all went well except had to wait about 10 days to place order as it was on back order. Once I placed the order every thing was timely and seamless. Assembly was fairly easy; instruction are clear and understandable. The unit is heavy. Two people required to set up as you install upside down. I built a mobile base for it for ease of movement around my small shop. I've run a number of board through it with great results. It produces smooth and clean cuts. The unit is very quiet. It produces a lot of saw dust and chips; the dust collection doesn't work as well as I would like, but that may be due to reducing to 2.5 inch hose and using a shop vacuum/cyclone set up. I suspect if you have a better dust collector with a 4 inch hose it would produce better results. Seems I'm getting a lot of chips/dust coming out the back side. I replaced a 1956 Craftsman Jointer so this unit definitely meets my expectations. Three more projects on the "To Do" list when it will be used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Planer is worth it!! I bought this unit a couple of months ago. It took me about 2-3 hours to assemble. Instructions are perfect and managed by myself. This is the 3rd planar I have bought in less than 6 months because until now, this is the only unit that I could make the infeed and outfeed tables coplanar and level. The fence is almost at a perfect right angle to the table. It basically came set up from the factory.. I just needed to do a few tweaks to get it almost perfect!! I had previously purchased a Cutech benchtop planar, and later a King Planar and spent literally days trying to adjust these units.... basically they are non- adjustable!! Both were returned and I was so glad to have read the reviews on this rigid model... Great purchase!!! Works excellently!! Thank you to all the others for taking the time to review this unit!!!! Thank you!!!!!

The unit is quite heavy for one person to turn upright after assembly -- I used a 2" ratchet strap supported by a 2x4 clamped to my 12' step ladder. Rewired for 240V operation (this should be done before mounting the motor) -- easy to follow diagrams. Ran a short piece of poplar for initial test; result was silky smooth -- very pleased. The 3D angle gauge is hard to read; so I used a Sharpie to darken the faint lines and text for easier reading -- it should be used to confirm the angles the fence is set to. The only potential problem I see is the fence does not move far enough forward to use the dado feature as I need -- expecting to have to add a spacer board to the fence's face... Be careful cleaning the oil (factory rust prevention); the knives are very sharp. SO MUCH quieter than my bench top jointer.

I've been waiting for this Ridgid Jointer/Planer to become available online for a while. Apparently they are available only in small batches. As soon as I saw it was available online I ordered one for $599. The next day the price dropped to $549. I contacted Home Depot to ask for a credit on the price and they did it without hesitation. Great customer service! Instructions to assemble the jointer was easy to understand. The jointer motor runs really smooth and quiet. The only loud noise came from the plastic dust chute vibrating against the metal side. I used foam weather stripping between the plastic and metal and the noise as eliminated. Since I use my garage as a workshop I put it on a mobile base so I can move it out of the way when not in use. Depending on your dust collection system it is hard to find the correct coupling. I took the plastic dust chute to the local woodworking store and found exactly what I needed. The jointer makes perfect 90 degree joints. I used a framing square to get the fence dialed in instead of using the provided plastic square. Don't rush the wood pieces through the jointer. Use a steady push and your wood pieces will be straight and smooth. The long cast iron front and rear tables keep the work piece absolutely level. Even though it has a narrow width it was perfect for my needs. I am happy with this purchase and would recommend it to other woodworkers who need something slightly bigger than a tabletop jointer. It gives professional grade results without the professional grade price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality! This is a very high quality jointer for a terrific price! It assembles just as stated in the directions. Allow a couple of hours but it's really not a big deal. Everything goes together very nicely. After putting it together, I commenced planing and joining 250 board feet of hard maple. The jointer produced very nice, smooth faces and edges on all boards with the stock knives that came with the jointer. Don't believe that you have to buy new blades right away to replace the ones that came with it. It's just not so. They are sharp and of good quality. I can't say how long they'll last but 250 bf of hard maple didn't effect them at all. This was a great purchase and I'm sure it will serve me well for many years. Some reviewers have mentioned frequent clogging of the dust chute. I am using a 2 HP dust collector with a 4 inch hose and have not experienced any problems with this at all. I suspect the problems are associated with running a shop vac on it with a 2.5 inch hose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ridgid 6-Amp Corded 6-1/8 in.. Jointer I’ve been waiting for this jointer to become available online. Apparently they only sell them in batches. I ordered one as soon as it was available online for $599. The following day the price dropped to $549. I called Home Depot Customer Service about my order and told them about the price change. They had no problem crediting me the lower price. The assembly instructions were easy to follow. The motor is smooth and quiet. There was a loud noise from the plastic dust chute vibrating when the jointer is running. I put some weather stripping between the plastic and metal and the noise stopped. The planing is smooth as long as you go slow and steady. It makes perfect 90 degree joints. I’m very happy with the purchase.

Easy to set up - the instructions are very clear, except for the blade setting instructions. It took me quite a while to reset the blades, at least one of which was installed crooked. You need to set them just a couple of thousandths above the outfeed table. Less and the board will catch on the leading edge of the outfeed table, more and it will cut an arc. I took others' advice and duct taped the motor bolt slots in the exhaust chute, and taped a cardboard box to the leg below the chute to catch the chips. If that keeps working, I'll probably make one of thin plywood, and a way to hook it on so it's easy to dump.

I was finally able to get my hands on one. Let me tell you it was worth the wait. This is a top notch machine to add to my growing home wood working shop. The minute that I opened it I could tell that it was going to be a solid piece. The table was square and I love the ease of adjustments and how quite it is. This is a heavy tool so, make sure that you get a mobile cart for it. My only complaint is that I wish the dust collection worked a little better for the top of the table. Other than that, order one, you wont be disappointed.
