Q:Will two layers reduce more sound? If so how much reduction in decibels?
    by|Nov 23, 2023
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Hi Rozzana... yes two 3" layers of ROCKWOOL Safe 'n' Sound would perform similarly to one layer of 6" which out performs one 3" layer at lower frequencies of sound when comparing the noise reduction coefficients of both thicknesses (data on technical data sheet). That said it is difficult to put a decibel value to this since it is always best to analyze the sound performance of the entire system as oppose to the insulation as a standalone. This is primarily because a typical wall or floor/ceiling assembly would comprise of different material types (gypsum, studs etc.) each of which reacts differently to sound. These assembly ratings are analyzed and rated using the STC rating (sound transmission class), STC 45 and above is a common target for residential applications. Have a look at our acoustic wall assemblies catalog for examples of systems we have actually tested. If you are still unsure about STC ratings feel free to reach out to our technical services line at 877-823-9790: https://p-cdn.rockwool.com/syssiteassets/o2-rockwool/documentation/technical-guides/commercial/acoustic-wall-assemblies-catalog-techincal-guide.pdf?f=20230725143316

Q:The simple R-value of almost all insulation is clearly printed on the outside of the packaging. The layperson cannot understand your complicated answer given another customer does not help the DIY person know if their product meets local building codes

The first thing I noticed was not significant sound differences for cost when compared to other products.

            Perfect for Every Project
I have been using ROCKWOOL since it was Roxul! I’ve long been a fan of ROCKWOOL Safe’n’Sound because the stone wool batts are an effective solution for reducing unwanted noise from neighbours, tenants, or your kids! This ROCKWOOL product is also great for added fire protection between floors, in income suites, or in interior walls throughout your home. Plus, it’s DIY friendly for a quick and easy install. I’ve trusted ROCKWOOL Safe’n’Sound insulation to create safer and quieter spaces for my shows and personal projects for years! Disclosure: I am a long-standing ambassador of ROCKWOOL and its stone wool insulation products and have previously received products in-kind. Although compensated for my role as an ambassador, my review is based on my first-hand experience using ROCKWOOL products and on my belief in their performance and benefits to buildings and occupants. I regularly used ROCKWOOL stone wool insulation products prior to establishing an ambassador relationship with ROCKWOOL. This review reflects my own honest opinion.

                So far great
First time using this and I am impressed with the sound barrier it provides. The piece of mind knowing that it helps slow fires is also a great benefit between the two duplexes. Will definitely recommend to others.

Went from a few walls to the whole house
Hey everyone. My name is Chris. We're building a house and I'm addicted to installing interior insulation. It started with insulating the walls between rooms. Then I thought, "We should do the ceilings above our bedroom and bathroom, which is under the loft and our son's room." Then it was, "What if someone goes upstairs to use the bathroom and we're having a fancy dinner party and hear them above?" Then it was, "If I do the ceiling for that reason, we might as well do around all of the bathrooms." "If I'm going that far, I should do every area that makes sense because there isn't much left." As soon as the insulation went in you could the dampening of the sound in the room. We haven't moved in yet, but I'm very satisfied with the change already even before drywall. After we move in we'll also do the basement ceiling. Great product!

                    Rock(wool) on!
Hi! During covid my band was banished to the garage for jams- and OMG! It was killing my hearing! So, I got me some Safe N Sound batts and got busy building sound panels. The results were outstanding both on the performace and look! See photos! thanks for a great product!

                      Easy to work with.
Used this product for the first time on a renovation project. It was very easy to work with and the installation went very fast. It cuts very easily with a bread knife and fits perfect between studs or ceiling joists. I would definitely used this product again. Also cuts down on the inside noise level.

                        Durable
We used Rockwool for under our slab, all our walls and attic. We added 2" of Comfortboard 80 on the outside of the house as well. We had it exposed to the weather for months as our build took forever. It was easier to cut than I expected but I recommend wearing long sleeves and safety glasses when installing as it gets itchy. I like that it stays in place when you used wall cavities and know I don't have to worry about any moisture ruining it.
