About This Product

ROMABIO Classico Limewash is a slow-set, slaked-lime paint that is specially formulated to create unique white wash effects for Interior and Exterior brick, stone and other masonry surfaces. This Limewash paint is easily applied as a 1-coat process to a damp surface and is washed off with a garden hose or spray water bottle to create an antique lime wash finish equal to the look in historic Europe. Unlike German smear technique using mortar, this paint is breathable, high UV-resistant, and will continue to calcify and harden over the years and will not peel or chip off as it is designed for durability for the exterior.

Highlights

  • Specially formulated for breathability on brick, stone and other masonry surfaces
  • After 50-70% dilution with water 1 qt. bucket will make 1.5 - 1.75 qt. of paint and covers 80 - 100 sq. ft.
  • Very flat finish provides non-reflective appearance and gives the natural lime wash look of historic Europe
  • Resists UV damage, peeling or flaking, for a durable and breathable paint finish with no maintenance unlike a mortar wash with German smear
  • Can be removed from most masonry surfaces within 2 days after application
  • Self-priming, 1-coat process and is applied to a damp surface and sprayed off for a whitewash effect
  • Dries in as little 10-minutes and up to 60-minutes, depending on sun and temperature and will not be affected by rain or normal weather conditions after initial application
  • Non-toxic formula will not harm lawn, trees, plants and animals
  • Naturally mold-resistant and breathable reducing the buildup of stagnant moisture
  • Soap and water cleanup cuts time in half and does not affect the environment
  • Zero-VOC formula minimizes ill-health effects
  • Concentrated formula reduces carbon footprint by up to 40%
  • Slow-set technology specially formulated to be antiqued and whitewashed, yet still creates a long-lasting finish

Questions & Answers

Can you use it on faux stone
ByDec 31, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hi Linda, Our paints are formulated for use on absorbent, natural mineral surfaces. We don't recommend them for faux stone. Our MicroGrip Primer can be used as a base coat when painting on faux stone, but please note that this would mean your Classico Limewash would need to be painted for full coverage. I hope this helps!

Can I use this on ceramic tile/backsplash
    ByNov 19, 2025
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Hi! Classico Limewash is not recommended for ceramic or tile. Unfortunately, Romabio does not offer a product suitable for it. We recommend looking into a product specifically made for this surface type. We hope this helps!

Does this need to be sealed on an indoor brick fireplace?
      ByAug 12, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Sealing the fireplace isn't required. However, Mineral Shield can be used to reduce the chalking effect of Classico Limewash. If you want to completely eliminate chalking, add scuff-resistance and a washable surface, it should be sealed with our Decorative Topcoat Flat. We hope this helps!

Can this be used on a wood burning fireplace surround bricks?
        ByAug 9, 2025
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

It can! However, we recommend sealing it with our Decorative Topcoat Flat after painting to avoid any discoloration caused by soot staining

Do I have to spray it off, or can I use it to "paint" the exterior brick?
          ByJul 16, 2025
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Distressing Classico Limewash is completely optional. It can be applied for full coverage, but please note that this product is made to age the more it's exposed to moisture (rainfall). If you're looking for long-lasting full coverage, Masonry Flat would be a better option.

Can this be applied to painted interior wall
            ByJun 4, 2025
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Hi! Classico Limewash can be applied to interior brick as long as it's absorbent. If it's being applied to interior drywall, a coat of MicroGrip Primer is needed as a base coat to ensure the product can adhere. However, we recommend out Velatura Mineralwash for limewash looks on interior drywall.

Can this be used on the brick tile?
              ByMar 28, 2025
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

If the brick tile is absorbent, yes. However, please note that Classico Limewash is not formulated for walkable surfaces. Because it doesn't have the scuff-resistance needed for these areas, it will wear quickly and require frequent touchups.

Can you tent limewash paint? Darker?
                ByNov 12, 2024
                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

Hi! Classico Limewash can be tinted to light to medium-light colors, as dark as our Nube Gray - see https://www.homedepot.com/p/ROMABIO-1-qt-Nube-Gray-Limewash-Interior-Exterior-Paint-10114/303053854. For darker colors, you may consider Masonry Flat for color transformation, or Venetian Glaze for semi-transparent color shifting effects.

Fairly easy to mix and apply. It does get a little messy and will splatter, so it is important to lay down drop cloth or something else to protect the surrounding area. I used a regular brush, not a mortar brush, and it worked just fine. One quart was more than enough to limewash my brick fireplace. I have half of the quart remaining after a 50/50 water and limewash mix. The color is white, but on the warmer side of white. After picture is below.

We are very happy with the Romabio lime wash. We used it on our old brick fireplace that had inconsistent color and some soot stains. It came out awesome and was pretty easy to use.

This LimeWash exceeding all expectations I had. Have an updated look to 40 year old brick. The wash bonds to brick, but still allows the character and surface to. It be muted by building up a coating. Big selling point was the wash allowing brick to breath and not trap moisture.

Classico Limewash is perfect to provide modernized or rustic looks! Lack of organic binders you find in traditional paints allows it to be absorbed into the brick instead of providing a coating, allowing the brick to maintain porosity and breathability. RomabioHC
Product was relatively easy to use and worked great! Really enjoying the new look of the house?

This stuff is amazing. It soaks into the brick and gives it a very natural look. It does not look like paint. Also easy to apply. Messy, but easy.

Crystallo White has a warm tone base.
This product works as intended and I like using it. The colors aren't well represented and the Cristallo 'White' is actually a warm yellow tone, like aged plaster. Attached photo is provided on a Romabio site and should be part of the pictures for this product.

This is the first time I have tried Romabio. I had an old fireplace that had red brick which made it look early American. I was able to transform the fireplace using this lime wash to update and improve the look. It was very easy to apply and the process was very easy. I definitely would use this again for any of my brick projects.

                      Don’t Hesitate - Buy It!
I bought this product to update our old 1950’s orange tone stone fireplace and I’m so pleased with the result! I wish I would have done this years ago! I used Nube Gray. Initially I was nervous how dark the paint was after mixing with water but it dries much lighter, which I was hoping for. I mixed with more water than instructed (sorry, Romabio) and I’m happy I did! I diluted with 850-900 mL water (vs the 500-700 mL as advised). I used a paint sprayer instead of a masonry brush which made the job wayyyyy easier. Highly recommend this product!!
