Questions & Answers

will this product stick to brick?

will this product stick to brick?
Asked by: kathy
I bought this to use on painted wood paneling and it didn't hold. I ended up purchasing an adhesive (I think I got locktight) and applied it using a caulk gun. I think it would probably stick to brick if you used extra adhesive. It might not look the best though.

Will the cove base adhere to a painted wall?

Asked by: aguilp01
Yes it does. Make sure your paint is fully dry--not just the two-hour-next-coat dry, but totally dry. It'll stick to to the paint either way, but if the paint isn't totally dry, the paint will come off the wall.

The self stick is nice to use. Be forewarned though, it takes some forearm strength to install. Leaving it in a warmer environment for 24 hours not only flattens it (per the package instructions), but softens it for install too. So definitely turn the heat up a bit while you condition it. The package warns you not to make a 90 degree angle at the base, yet it needs some angle to look nice. I found that if I put the top at the right height, and then push the bottom in, it makes a nice clean look. After you stick it to the wall, you'll want to press it in to make it secure. Wear leather gloves or use a soft cloth for that. Then after it is stuck, take a board and press the bottom corner into the wall. I used a 1 foot long 1x3 scrap I had. Doing that makes the bottom stick and makes a nice crisp angle--not a 90 degree, of course. When cutting this, use a new utility blade and a small metal-edged square. Trust me, a sharp blade will make your life easier. The square will make a nice 90 degree edge. Cut the piece you want a few inches longer. Start from one end pushing and sticking. Don't get too far ahead of yourself pulling off the backing. Two or three feet is good. When you have finished sticking the strip except for a couple feet from the end, make a nick at the exact place to cut and fold it over to a scrap cutting board (protect the floor) and use the square and cut it vertical. Then peel the rest and stick it. As stated earlier, it's going to take some grip strength to position it right, but it's worth taking the time to do it right. I was impatient on one section and regret it. So take your time and do it right. The corners were a challenge. Take a piece at the end and practice before you install. It's not as easy as it sounds. The inside corners are easier than the outside. Practice first and you'll do fine. The package says not to put a seam within a foot of a corner. They are right, it doesn't stick well if you do. Unfortunately, that can't be helped. Sometimes that's all the wall there is. If you, like me, end up with a short section of wall, be prepared to use some cove base adhesive and something heavy to push against it while it cures. The self stick won't be enough for long term on a short section like that. Overall it's a good product. I would have given it 5 stars if it were easier to install and make look good. I definitely recommend it.

Had a little trouble with the corners, trying to cut to fit as close to accurate as possible. Found a couple of spots over the next few days that I had to go back and press again but its been in place for a week and it looks great for my first attempt at something like this.

We used it to cover kitchen cabinet toe kicks that had been subject to water damage from a leaking dishwasher in what was formerly a rental home with careless tenants. I used a hair dryer to heat the material as I applied it, this made the material more flexible, and I think it also improved the adhesion to the old toe kicks. In our case it creates a nice contrast from our natural finished oak cabinets. We have new Black Slate finished appliances being delivered this weekend and they should blend in well with the high contrast toe kicks finished in this Black Cove Base. With a little care in installation you can achieve a professional look. Ideally new cabinets and counters would be in order, but this solution makes it look "decent" until that BIG expenditure is in our budget.

First off, it should only be used on clean and smooth surfaces. I used on new drywall. Initially it stuck, but within minutes it let go. I found that the use of a hair dryer on High Heat Setting while smoothly pressing it to the wall finally did the trick.
