Does the saw have variable speed capabilities?

Will the saw use straight blades or only pinned

Asked by: Billy
It uses both, but you may have to remove the jaws to plane them for the unpinned blades, as they seem to be barely finished sand castings. And yes, the nuts, or screws, break after a few weeks of torsion, but they are easily replaced by a better quality fastener available from the hardware section. (I bought mine 15 years ago, and it cost 100.00 then.)

Is there a light on Ryobi scroll saw?

I saw no mention of a flexible light for this saw. Also, does it come with extra blades?
Asked by: Jerry
There is no light on this model. Just a dust blower that is a little awkward to set properly.

1.2 Amp Corded 16 in. Scroll Saw is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 265.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad for a $100 This ain't a bad choice for first time scroll saw owners. It's quiet, it's light, and it's cheap. The instructions leave a lot to be desired. There's no pictures to go along with the descriptions, so you'll just have to use some common sense when figuring it out. Luckily, it's not complicated. Two tips you should do right off the bat - first ditch the blades that come with it. They're junk. Don't buy the Ryobi replacement blades either. Pick up some Olson pinless blades (which of course HD doesn't sell) and put those in. The blades that come with it are too big for true scroll work. They're only slightly better than using a jig saw.Second, wax the table. A saw in this price point will have a less than smooth, stamped aluminum table. It's rough and doesn't allow the wood to move freely. Waxing it with Johnson or Minwax paste wax helps out quite a bit in making it smoother.

It seems a good value for the money, but I'm upset about a couple of design deficiencies that seem to be no-brainers. Pin-end blades work fine in the saw, but it is very difficult to tighten the clamps enough to use plain-end blades. When I tried, the plastic thumb grip on the upper clamp bolt stripped right off--that's the first no-brainer: If a part is going to be subjected to strain, don't make it out of soft plastic. I noticed on a website for replacement parts that this part is a best seller. Go figure. Fortunately, the saw came with a hex wrench for tightening that bolt, so I used that--and snapped the bolt in half. Second no-brainer: if a bolt is going to be subjected to significant torque, give in a sufficient diameter to withstand the torque. I can still use the saw with pin-end blades, and a replacement bolt is relatively inexpensive (I plan to buy several), but this design needs to be addressed.

The top blade adjustment holder is plastic is very easy to strip making the saw worthless. Others have commented on this. 2. The drop foot kicks over to the right no matter how hard it is tightened. Maybe this was due to the material I was working with. I was cutting 28 ga sheet metal and the vibration caused the right side of the drop foot to lift up off the the metal. I exchanged the saw for another Ryobi. I had the same problems although I did not use pin-less blades to the blade adjustment holder wasn't an issue. The drop foot still wouldn't stay down on the work. I returned the 2nd saw for a refund. This scroll saw might work well on wood and plastics but IMO it does not do well with light sheet metal. I give Home Depot return policy 5 stars! The saw get none.

I like everything except the brace that holds the piece for the sawblade, 2 ss arms, that whole mechanism is a little crooked on mine and hard to get to stabilize, wants to loosen during use. I'll figure it out I'm sure but haven't had time yet

It is a little hard to change blades but for the price it cannot be beat. I have no problem recommending it for the weekend woodworker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I needed a scroll saw because......... I am a DIY kind of guy and the tools I use don't need to be high quality and expensively made. I do a lot of metal art and my angle grinders get a lot of hard use. But some of my tools don't get used much at all. That is the way with this scroll saw. I had an old one that I bought years ago and it is made out of cast iron and is VERY heavy. I wanted something to replace that and I wanted something easier to use and lift. This RYOBIE Scroll saw fit the bill perfectly. I started using it right out of the box and it is sitting on my work bench right now. I am doing some laser engraving and need a scroll saw for some of my work. This one is perfect for me. I couldn't be happier. Anyone who is going to compare it to a $500.00 scroll saw is not thinking right. This scroll saw is priced just right for what it was meant for, if you want more than this, then spend more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not impressed Bought this only to return because it was missing the gage for the variable speed dial. Website on Ryobi says it comes with 3 blades and it came wit two. Then the tool free blade clamp that was on the saw was not on the saw. I drove 3 hrs round trip to switch it out only to get a 2nd product in the same condition. When I called Ryobi customer service the 1st time I was on hold for almost and hr before I just hung up. When I finally got a hold of them they kept putting me on hold before I could finish what all was wrong with the product. Kinda rude really. Said that it only comes with 2 blades so website is wrong. " False Advertising " then couldn't give me the variable speed label to add to the saw because that was added in the factory. Then they found the tool free blade clamp and could send that but never took my information and hung up. I've bought plenty of products from Ryobi but makes me second guess what I'll buy in the future.
