Questions & Answers

Anyone use this drill press on metal? Aluminum etc. How did it hold up?

Asked by: Jlhales
The bit should be doing all the work. not the press

Can anyone offer solutions for bolting down a Bessey 4 inch Vice? .

I'm using the vice to hold 1 1/2 x 1/4" pieces of lattice for eye screw holes. I'm a beginning small business crafter. My husband is thinking C clamps but the less in my way the better. The elongated slots do not line up with the press for the standard bolt.
Asked by: Kat
Turn them press sideways a nd it should fit. Try 1/2 in. Lag bolts, the square head fits perfect.

The motor sparks when starting and clatters when stopping. Is that normal?

Asked by: Woody
a starting capacitor is an electronic part that is in the wiring of the motor, it creates an magnetic field to ad starting the motor. it has no mechanical connection that would clatter when the drill in turned off.

10 in. Drill Press with EXACTLINE Laser Alignment System is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 328.

I'm sure this is a perfectly fine drill press and will accommodate your basic drill pressing needs in most circumstances. I purchased this item, drilled three basic holes in some pine before the depth stop broke to the point of uselessness. I can function without a depth stop and was going to overlook the poor judgement in using plastic on a piece of the drill that is obviously not well suited for the stresses it will be subjected to. I decided to move on to my next project which required me to pivot the work table 45 degrees. All I needed to do was loosen the bolt to make the adjustment. Only, there is another small bolt with a nut on it in the way, preventing me from being able to get a reasonable grip on the bolt to loosen it up and make the adjustment. Honestly, I can't imagine why that small bolt needed to be placed in the most inconvenient spot. And I can imagine a few ways this thing could have been designed that would lock the table in place that would not require another tool to make what should be a basic and simple adjustment to the work surface of the press. This is lazy engineering. For the record, I have other Ryobi brand tools in my workshop and are perfectly happy with them. I boxed it back up and took it back to HD an hour after I had it set up.

The drill press is shipped with the belt on the lowest speed setting and it is really hard to get the belt off the slowest setting. It would be better if it shipped with the belt on the middle of the pulleys. 2. The 2 nuts that tighten against one another to set the depth stop don't really tighten. Both of them tightened together started to slowly wind their way down the depth stop shaft so effectively the depth of the holes became less deep over the course of drilling. I added a lock washer between the 2 knurled depth stop nuts to try to increase the tension between them and try to stop the slippage. Haven't tried it again after adding the lock washer. Otherwise it drills accurate holes. Not a lot of vibration or noise. Since I haven't added a table with a fence yet, the laser "X" was extremely helpful for quickly lining up the center of the holes to be drilled.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Broken plastic depth gauge collar Upon assembly I found that the plastic collar that clamps around the chuck holder was broken. I don't blame Home Depot, I blame UPS and / or what ever other company shipped it as it had a dent on the box and one broken white plastic strap that goes around the box. I decided to assemble it anyway as I need it for a project that is important. I called the customer support line for help and they said I could return it to the nearest store but I need it now and I am disabled so dis-assembly and reassembly is difficult for me. They say it's a new model so they don't have any parts yet and that I should call again in a month or so to see if they have any then. I decided to use it without the depth gauge and call in a month. That plastic part should be made out of a different material or reinforced or packaged separately. Other than that I like this drill press. Locating the switches on the front panel is PERFECT. Very easy to use with Arthritic hands. Oh, and I love the intersecting lasers for locating the drill. Works great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super great product I bought the 10 inch Ryobi drill press for knife-making and small woodworking projects are any job around the house. It has met every expectation and every means. And the laser is spot-on and keeping up with your drill mark.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money and time Upon turning the drill on, the depth stop flew apart. The guide has a plastic collar that wraps around the chuck, and I can only assume the collar was damaged at the factory when they installed the chuck, which also flew off. I called Ryobi and they said they would get me a guide in the mail immediately. Three weeks later I called them back to ask where my guide was, and I was told it was back-ordered and there was no projected date for receipt. On the same day I purchased a 10" compound miter saw which would not make a square cut as it had been assembled with a 3 degree cant which could not be corrected. That same day I also purchased a belt/disc sander which could not be assembled because there was weld material in two screw holes. The box did not include the key. I called the company and was told they would get one in the mail immediately, and I would receive it in 7-10 days. Three weeks later, when I called back, the order could not be found. Ryobi does NOT have my vote!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Easy assembly, easy to use, reliable, powerful, and overall a great bench-top tool. The laser guide and light are great touches as well. Drills through a variety of different woods from pine to hardwoods with ease. I would definitely recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exactly what you SHOULD expect Frankly, I got exactly what I needed with this drill press. I certainly did not purchase a $129.00 drill press to drill through granite. If you need it to do low level-intermediate projects, then it is a perfect option. If you plan to use and abuse the drill press on a daily basis, you're obviously going to want something in a higher price range. It's easy to assemble, sturdy, and handled a 2.5in forstner through mesquite without a hiccup. I guess I don't understand some of the bad reviews, as it seems like people were expecting a Benz for the price of a Kia. If you commute 150 miles each day, I wouldn't recommend a Kia, and if you just head to the store every now and again, you probably don't need a Cadillac. Just know that you're buying a Kia, and if that's all you need, you will be satisfied!
