Questions & Answers

If the bag is removed, can this be hooked to a shop vac for better debris removal?

If the bag is removed, can this be hooked to a shop vac for better debris removal?
Asked by: FloridaBob
Although the fitting is a standard 1 1/4 vac connection, I find that the hose doesn't fit snuggly enough to be able to sand without fiddling with the hose to keep it to stay on. I am using the Ridgid standard 1 1/4 orange hose and my hose falls off. The employees at Home Depot plumbing dept may help with some fittings or simple slim line clamp that may be easily applied to the outside of the unit/hose so as to make sure there is a tight fit. I'm still sanding outside if possible on wood working projects. The dust collection of the unit itself warrants outside sanding.

If your talking about a dust collection bag, the sander comes with that option.

Replacement sandpaper sheets

Does the sandpaper have to have holes it for the dust or will the solid mouse sandpaper sheets work okay?
Asked by: Paul
It's not clear what your question is, but you can buy replacement sheets in various grades at at any hardware store or building center. If you're using a dust collector, you have to use the ones with holes.

18-Volt ONE+ Cordless 5 in. Random Orbit Sander (Tool-Only) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 807.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy Sander to Have This is a very nice sander to have in your workshop. If you are in the ryobi platform this is the orbit sander to go with. Does a great job and holds up well. Not sure it could be used everyday in a professional setting but at the price point its great for the DIYer. I like it so much i have 2 that i use on a regular basis.

It works well for a while but seems to wear out relatively fast, i've worn out at least 3 of them sanding drywall. It would be nice if Ryobi would make an upgraded version with a brushless motor and selectable speeds. It should get you through a few jobs but keep your receipt, you'll need it to swap yours for a new one.

I bought one of these because I needed to sand something up high and didn't want to deal with cords while going up and down a ladder. I have small hands so this sander was very easy for me to hold. The first one i bought lasted about 10mins and it would not come back on. I swapped out the battery and it just wouldn't work. I took it back and swapped it out for another. It lasted 15mins before I had the same problem. This time I watched a couple youtube videos and i took it apart. I could see that the problem was in the design of the switch. So once I saw how it worked it was a matter of wiggling the switch in just the right position to get it to come back on. Yes it was frustrating, but the convenience of the size of the tool and it being cordless outweighed the problem.

The first died after 1 month on the second use. it started to lose power and then smoke started to pour from it and it froze in place. I try to contact Ryobi about this as I needed to get this fixed so I could finish my project before the deadline. I got the standard answer and went to home depot as instructed. I was told I had to pay a $78 deposit for them to look at it and determine if it was covered under waranty. After this I started to say that it was unacceptable and a manager agreed and gave me a new one with no documentation. On to the new one now. I finished the project I was on and recently started a new one. Again the sander started to lose power and smells of burning. I again contact Ryobi for an explanation as to why this is an issue and get the same standard response as before. I am not going to deal with this anymore. Why do I need to pay someone to tell me the product has failed for the second time in less that a year after two small projects each. If Ryobi wants to talk to me they can but I will not be purchasing another Ryobi product with this customer service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from disppointment Like other reviews say, its eats power. I have a lot of ryobi tools and i get them to destroy so i dont hurt my nice equipment. That said, this thing is pathetic, i used it to sand the bulk of a counter top and a pedestal that i use to fasten a child safety seat onto inside an ambulance. It almost worked for long enough to do both small jobs, but didnt and im the type of person that gets more out of taking a pile of crap like this into the parking lot and beating it to oblivion with a baseball bat then taking it back to the store. You know, u live, u learn, u buy ridgid tools.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome for what it is Ok, so I picked this up because I wanted a cordless sander, and the reviews indicated that on the 4ah battery the run time was sufficient. A few points 1. This is not corded. It doesnt provided corded performance. What it does do though is give you NEARLY corded performance without the cord 2. Mine spins fine, not 10,000RPM, but probably 250RPM? With the oscillation though it removes material quite quickly. I've done significant work on rough hewn solid oak and have been impressed so far. 3. Uses standard pads. Nice as I can get em for cheap. 4. Uses the same batteries as everything else 18v and Ryobi. Nice, I can get those cheap too, and I have a pile. Also the dust collection works pretty well for on tool. It isn't going to compete with a corded 5" orbital. What it will do though is get you away from the cord for normal weight work, and do a good job with the batteries I already have. Totally worth the $40 I spent.
