Questions & Answers

Full throttle issue

I recently purchased one of these, and my unit will not run at full throttle. When I squeeze the throttle more than half way, it boggs out...why?
Asked by: MrC1122
They will tell you to take it to a service center then say you used old fuel (although all your other tools are fine) then try and charge you $150 for new carb and spark plug. i have just had the same issue and its not covered under Ryobi terrible 3 year warranty.

Asked by: Jim
sounds like your "cruise control" switch is holding the throttle trigger on. Make sure your throttle is ALL the way off the cruise control gizmo is not preventing it from returning to zero (idle)

Does the Ryobi model 08420A require a gas mixture?

Asked by: jojo
Thank you for asking, Jojo. This product is powered by a 2-cycle engine and requires pre-mixing gasoline and 2-cycle lubricant. Pre-mix unleaded gasoline and 2-cycle engine lubricant in a clean container approved for gasoline. DO NOT mix quantities larger than usable in a 30-day period. Recommended fuel: This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline intended for automotive use. NOTE: We recommend you use Ethanol Shield 2-cycle lubricant, PowerCare 2-cycle lubricant (6.4 oz. or 16 oz.), or an equivalent high-quality synthetic 2-cycle lubricant in this product. Mix at 2.6 oz. per gallon (US). Do not use automotive lubricant or 2-cycle outboard lubricant. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in Ryobi! -Keri

In about 8 weeks I am going to need something to help clean up the mess they are going to make. Rakes are primitive, archaic, and boring. A 175mph 760 cfm backpack leaf blower is more my style. I received this and put it together last night. It wasn’t hard to assemble, I did get it figured out eventually. Though I found the instructions to be not very helpful in regards to assembly. I filled up the tank with 2-cycle mix gasoline and followed the starting instructions. It started up on the first pull. I hoisted it onto my back and adjusted the straps. It’s not light, but not terribly heavy either. I could handle it okay. My 12 year old daughter, probably not so much. I walked around the yard blasting every stray leaf I saw. I also took it through the garage and ‘swept’ the floor. This thing is super powerful and does exactly what it’s supposed to do. I look forward to really putting it to use here in a few weeks.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Piece of junk Good grief, what happened to Ryobi? I had a multi-tool unit with a straight blower that ran for 10 years, and was really happy with it. I replaced that with another multi-tool, but they changed the blower to a little fan on a stick thing that was pretty crummy. I decided to upgrade to a backpack unit, the BP40. It was hard to start, but was much more powerful than the fan on a stick. It ran well for 1 fall season. After 2 uses in the 2nd season, it never started again. It now has a death rattle when I try and start it, and it is dead. I am well versed in the art of premix, 2 stroke engines, etc, so I know it is not operator error. From what I have read, it will be a complete waste of time and money to try and get it fixed or replaced. I also read that Ryobi is now sold exclusively at Home Depot. There is the answer folks, Home Depot has made Ryobi make these things so cheap that they are basically disposable. Shame on Home Depot for selling this junk, and shame on Ryobi for selling their soul to Home Depot.

I used premium ethanol free gas with fuel stabilizer and the proper fuel to oil mixture, 50:1. I used the blower approximately once a week and now the blower for a less than two minutes it shuts off by itself. I called the Ryobi outdoor tool department and was told to take it to an authorized repair shop 18 miles away (36 miles round trip). The repair shop said these blowers fail all the time and there are fees to fix them for most carburetor related problems. He also said it is often not worth fixing them since the repair cost is so high. I worked for the Home Depot for 18 months (3/2017 to 11/2018) and was a Lawn & Garden certified sales associate. I sold several of these blowers and I now regret doing so. I can never recommend this product again. The 3 year warranty is worthless given the repair costs and time/money spent driving to and from the repair shop 18 miles away. Spend the extra $100 and buy the Echo gas blower.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from VERY DISAPPOINTED I had a 12 year old Poulan handheld leaf blower that finally bit the dust. I have lots of oak trees in my yard so technically the old blower was undersized. I looked around, read reviews from multiple sites, and finally decided to go with the Ryobi mainly due to the warranty. I bought the Ryobi on sale during March and didn't even take it out of the box until May. First time I used it everything went "ok." Second time I used it, it started to cut off with the throttle wide open. Then it just kept getting worse. I took it in to the authorized service center and they said the carburetor was bad. Keep in mind that I've only used this to blow off the driveway at this point and only with ethanol free gas. Next thing I know, I have a $80 repair bill for something that was defective out of the box. I called Ryobi customer service and they told me to get over it, the repair is are not covered. That being said, I will NEVER purchase another CHEAPLY made Ryobi product.

Thanks to the answer from DavidInEastTexas to the "stopping and not starting" question, I bought a set of tuning tools from Amazon, and now my blower runs like a champ! It was a good blower before the tune, and now it's a great one. I've run almost a gallon of gas through it since the adjustment and it has been completely problem free and stays at a comfortable temperature too. His comment about gas cooling down the engine is correct. A couple of minor details to add to David's answer. 1) My carb actually needed the D shaped tool vs. the Pacman. I bought my blower recently, so they may have switched carbs or made a slight change. To be safe, make sure the tool set you get has both shapes. 2) To access the tuning screw you will have to push the gas tank forward enough to gain access. The engine is spring mounted, so this is not a big deal.

Overall, the power was much greater than I had expected, and this allowed me to complete my yard blowing leaves in record time. I bought 50:1 mixed fuel, to make sure I don't mess up the engine, and the consumption of this fuel was quite significant - for 1/4 acre, I used about 90 oz of fuel. A little hard to start the machine - I've owned machines that were easier to pull. And why can't a company that makes sophisticated tools such as this, put a decent manual together. It amazes me how horrible these black&white manuals associated with these tools are. Do they use the same company for these? That's a business I should go into. I had trouble connecting the airflow connector (for lack of a better word), but finally figured it out. The manual was utterly useless in that regard. I'm 59 years old, and I found that the backpack was a little heavy after wearing it for about 3 hours. Overall, 4 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Use This blower makes short work of cleaning leaves and twigs off of my roof and awning. The awning is of corrigated polycarbonate and extends 14 feet out from the roof of my house. I can stand at the edge of the roof and blow everything off the awning in a few minutes. Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing is AWESOME! i am a 64 yr old woman, 5' 4", weight 130 lbs who does the yard work. We have a hilly 1/2 acre of pines, oaks and other leaf shedding trees. What used to take me hours with the handheld blower now only takes me half the time. This blower isn't heavy, once I adjusted the straps to fit me and I got over being nervous about strapping a running motor to my back, it was fantastic! Talk about moving leaves both wet and dry, I was overjoyed! It took us about 20 minutes to put together, it started on the first try and while I've only used it once, I can hardly wait to use it again. No more dragging extension chords around and having to rake large piles of leaves when the old blower couldn't move them any further. I am one happy camper. Thanks Ryobi for making a product that lives up to my expectations.
