Can you spray this down with the water hose after mowing?

Asked by Hj July 23, 2020

Answers

The manual says not to use water on it, which makes sense since it is electric. The blade and cutting area stay surprisingly clean after mowing, although we have not had much wet grass to mow this year. We use it as mulching mower and do not know what it would be like if we used the catcher. But don't wash it the way you would a gas powered mower.

We have owned this mower for about a month now, and we are very pleased. It is Powerful - equal or better than a gas mower same size It is ready - whenever you have a charged battery Many features - Easy to adjust cutting height- Variable speed set adjusts to desired walking pace Handle - Folds down easy for storage Headlights - Not really needed yet or ever will, never mow in the dark not sure how much battery it uses, whatever it is, it's wasted. Our lot is about 1/8 acre, so far the battery does it with about 1/2 the charge on the 7.5 amp that came with the unit.

Ryobi 18” This review is for the 18” model as that is what was sent to me. This is a bare bones 40 volt push mower (not self propelled) It is very light and very easy to push through the lawn, as the wheels a fairly narrow (a good thing). To start the machine you insert the battery then push the button in the center of the handle and squeeze on side of the bar levers and the blade is now spinning. Very easy to use, and the sharp blade cuts the grass easily and quietly. The mower comes with an attachable side discharge chute which will converted from a mulching mower to side discharge. I leave mine off, as I like free fertilizer mulched clippings. I have had this for a few months now and used it many times. It is great for doing my smaller front yard and around the perimeter of my backyard where I use the lawn tractor for the bulk of the work. It is much easier to manage than my old gasoline powered mower. If you have a smaller lawn (.25 acre or less) and are looking for an economical quiet battery powered lawnmower then I highly recommend this unit. Again, it is a no-frills unit but does the job quite nicely. See photos.

I finally made the decision to go electric after having back surgery. This mower is great! I used a Cub Cadet prior, so I really wanted nice features and a quality product to replace it. The first part that took me by surprise is the power of the self-propelled. It will literally pop-wheelies if you aren't paying attention. It is also quiet. It makes me giggle because it sounds like a power wheels pushing a fan around. It doesn't lack power though- it cuts the grass with ease and hasn't let me down yet. The folding storage is perfect! The bag is easy to use and the battery life is great. I have a fair sized sloped yard, so that was important to me. I am blown away with the safety features. I am on my second month and still love it. I highly recommend this mower.

I now have only Ryobi products including the drill, chain saw, trimmer, edger, circular saw and now the 21" lawnmower. I started purchasing Ryobi products over five years ago and am incredibly impressed with these products. I only use battery operated equipment including my car and will never go back to gas for any product again. The Ryobi products have ample power and their longevity is outstanding. I love that the batteries and chargers are included with the products and that the batteries are interchangeable.

I love the Ryobi 21 in. 40-volt Lithium-Ion brushless cordless walk behind self-propelled mower with 7.5 AH battery/charger. It is a great mower. It's very lightweight and does a beautiful job mowing. The height adjustment feature is so great. The fact that it adjusts all wheels at the same time is awesome. It can be folded for easy storage which is great! The only down side is the battery is not enough to do our yard. I will order another battery so I can do the yard all at once.

(What's this)
I always wanted to try an electric lawnmower, and this 40 volt line of tools from Ryobi is pretty terrific, so I decided to give this one a go. First, the good points: Much of the design is really well thought-out. The handle folding mechanism is simple and doubles as a cutoff switch for extra safety. The height adjustment is really nice - a single handle easily adjusts all four wheels at once. Power is adequate, and battery life is enough to do my lawn at least twice. There is storage under the hood for a second battery, although I don't think they are available yet. There is quite a bit of plastic, but that's just how things are nowadays. Overall, construction is solid. The actual cutting action is the same as my gas mower, so being electric is no drawback there. One thing that is really nice is the low noise level. I normally wear earplugs with the gas mower, not needed with the electric. This is the quietest lawnmower I've ever used. So far, so good. Now on to the bad: The controls are awful. To make it go, you have to constantly pull on either of two trigger levers. Not only is it unnatural to pull back to go forward, but the amount of force needed quickly gave me cramps in my hands. The speed control slider is only sort-of functional, it is more like a switch: left-slow, middle-fast, right-nothing more. But the worst thing is the rear-wheel-drive. You cannot hold this thing back - the big drive wheels dig in and it will just drag you along. If you naturally pull back on the handle, you end up squeezing the triggers, and it just gets worse until you remember to let go. There is also a very noticeable lag in the electric drive control, so starting and stopping is annoying. It feels like you're a passenger in a car with a manual transmission, and the driver doesn't know how to shift. Basically, to do anything but long straight runs, you're going to end up disengaging the drive and horsing it around by hand. In one of the pictures, you can see my gas mower, which handles beautifully. Push to yolk forward to go, pull back to stop. To turn a tight corner, just lean on the handle a bit, the front drive wheels come off the ground, make your turn and put them back down to go again. Impossible with the rear-drive electric. Did I mention the electric mower is also noticeably heavier than the gas one? Anything but going straight is a wrestling match, and the machine doesn't get tired. Maybe all my complaints are because I really like the old mower, and I haven't used the new one very much and need to get used to it. But I have a feeling I could use it all summer and not like it any better by fall. So back to the drawing board, Ryobi, this is one I can't recommend. Front or rear wheel drive is a design choice and a user preference, and there are some very nice features, but the electric controls need to be redesigned. And switch to front-wheel drive - it works much better. Next year!

I like this battery driven mower! This Ryobi 40v mower is great, easy to use and very efficient at cutting the grass. It has a bagger feature or you can use for mulching instead. Height adjustment is easy to do, just push a lever and you raise or lower the deck to whatever height you need. Has an on board storage area for a spare battery for future use. Self propelled mode is adjustable for your stride.

(What's this)
I love this mower! I have never had anything but gas powered mowers and never thought a battery powered one could do the job. I have a small fenced off area for my dog and can't get my riding mower in the gate to keep the grass trimmed. I have been using a gas powered mower and it is just a lot of upkeep for such a small task. I found this mower to be just the right size and features to keep my yard looking great! It came assembled and you just have to pop it out of the box, charge the battery and go! I used the catcher to keep from having to rake the clippings and used the lowest setting. The lever to change your height from 1-4 inches is a single handle and simply glides up and down to adjust. The self propel is something else and even on the slowest setting was very powerful. I didn't use this feature on most of my yard because it is mostly level and this mower is lighter than expected. It took me about 10 minutes to mow the whole area and then I folded it up and stored it right on my back patio. I will move it to the shed this winter but to have the convenience of it right on the patio whenever I want to mow is very nice. I can't say how long the battery lasts because I didn't use it long enough but there is storage on board for an additional battery if you have a larger lot to mow.

Wow! It's not often I get excited about a lawnmower but this one has not disappointed. I've owned 2 other battery operated mowers (one self-propelled and one not) from another manufacturer. Those have some drawbacks but more of that, later. This Ryobi mower had A LOT of thought put into its design. First the handle is not only collapsible but it is also retractable - meaning you can make it longer or shorter. That makes it easier to customize your use of it based on your height. Next, the battery life is phenomenal. The other manufacturer's battery (48 v) didn't last as long and this mower has an open bay for an additional back-up battery, on board. I was able to make 4 passes on a lawn that is 75' by 75'. Starting from 4 inches down to 1 inch. I only cut on the inch increment, not the halves. Next, the self propulsion speed can be adjusted and this is one of the best designed adjustments on this mower. Sometimes, self propelled mowers can "get away" from you and this feature allows you to adjust the speed so it suits your needs. Also, the propulsion is activated by a twin grip activator and this, too, sets it apart from some of its competitors. The blade cuts very well and mulches too. All in all: a good purchase. The one draw back and it's really not: the LED lights on the front (yes, there are headlights) cannot be turned off but they draw very minimal power.

(What's this)
If you've got a small flat yard and your grass isn't very tall or thick, this might be the mower for you. It's not as powerful as any gas mower I've every used, but as long as your grass hasn't gotten too tall, it's still powerful enough. Battery technology has come leaps and bounds in the past few years, but this 7.5ah still doesn't last very long; I've got a pretty small front yard and I got about 85% of it done on one charge. For some reason this thing has a headlight. I guess that's useful if you cut your grass at night, but that's not something I've ever done. I'm sure it doesn't eat up that much juice, but with such a short battery life, every little bit of energy conservation would help. It takes a long time to charge, so having an extra battery around wouldn't be a bad idea if you've got the extra money for it. Say what you will about the hassle of gasoline engines, but when you run out of gas, it doesn't take six hours to fill the tank. I really don't like the fact that this is rear drive. With fwd, you can just push down on the handle if you need to turn a corner or stop forward motion for any reason. With this thing, you have to let go of a lever, then squeeze it again and wait for it to engage before it starts moving again. I found it was much easier to just push it and not use the self-propelled feature at all. Everything on this mower has a cheap plastic feel to it and the handle managed to come partially undone halfway through the yard causing the motor to stop. Time will tell about overall quality. I will say that the blade height adjustment on this thing is the quickest and easiest I've every used. Just pull the trigger and pull up or push down until it's the height you want.
