how easily does this bind up? currently useing an old delta 1/3 hp combo sander that binds up and stops spining on anything more then light pressure and i want to get my own before i have another sanding project and break a sander that isnt even mine
Asked by: rick
I've had this for three years now and it hasn't bound up on me at all. Having said that, I use it for a range of things from cleaning the ends of metal angle iron to smoothing out small wood cut pieces. If by binding you mean the long bed wrapping up in the unit, the adjustment dial works very well. It took a bit to dial it in and find center on the belt, but once in it hasn't needed adjusting.

Can you use it to sand/grind metal??

Asked by: Mac
Yes. It does a nice job on metal. Have used one for years for that reason only. Does a real nice job on sharpening drill bits.

is it normal to make a rumbling noise when using the belt

it makes rumbling noise when applying pressure
Asked by: judge911
This sander uses an induction motor. The only way to vary the speed is to change the input frequency. Household AC power is 60hz. Don't try it.

Can you use a variable speed controller with this sander?

Can you use a variable speed controller with this sander?
Asked by: Belizondo
To the bast of my belief the sander does not have a variable speed control. If it does, I haven't found it yet.

Customer Reviews

4 in x 36 in. Belt and 6 in. Disc Sander is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 252.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Buy First off: I'm a weekend warrior when it comes to wood working. Love to do it, but still learning. This is my first Stationary Sander, and have used it for a few days now. I did put on a Diablo 120grit belt for my finish sanding. Price-one of the least expensive units I have seen Size- not too big, allows me to store it away when not in use. Ease of use-So much easier sanding a lot of parts before assembly now. (used to sit down with an electric hand sander and make a huge mess). Easy to change belts, and reconfigure belt to vertical position. 4x36in size belt is a good size work surface, easy to put pieces up there and gets them smooth fast. Cons: Let me use it a little longer and I will update, none so far. Overall I am very happy. It makes short work of something that used to be the longest part of some of my builds. If I had to do it over again, I would still buy this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Quality than I expected! I debated on whether to buy this one or jump to a really expensive JET brand. I only woodwork as a hobby and not serious enough about it to spend $400 on a sander. I was worried about the quality of the Ryobi and went back and forth in my mind for a while on whether to purchase it. Well I walked into Home Depot shortly before Christmas and picked it up. This thing works great ! I have been sanding a lot of wood work on it and I have had 0 issues. It is powerful yet not deafening. Some people complained in other reviews on previous models that the belt tracking was off and the belt always moved to one side. I also had this problem, until I followed the directions and adjusted the belt tracking. now it stays right in the center and doesn't move. I am really glad that I bought this, so much so that I signed in here to write the review. Thanks for the great value Ryobi on a nice product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly effective and inexpensive. Very rugged, easy to assemble and adjust, comes complete with all accessories. Bought Diablo replacement sanding belts and discs but surprisingly haven’t needed them yet, as the factory belt and disc has held up well and performs satisfactorily. Unit is much quieter than competing brands. Unit allows for vertical as well as horizontal sanding with belt. All belt sanders will stall if too much pressure is applied, but this one is very torquey and stall resistant, despite its relatively low speed, as it seems to be geared more for torque, just like Ryobi’s chainsaws. I also prefer the control that the speed allows. If you use a light, steady, patient touch, your results will be excellent. unit is pretty heavy for it’s size, which is one of the reasons vibration is minimal. All in all, an excellent and useful addition to any home or light industrial shop. If it is anything like my other Ryobi tools, it will still be working in a decade or two!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent power & qaulity. Perfect for DIY projects I have owned this for about 6 months and have found it indispensable for small sanding and grinding projects around the garage. I recently made a ATV rack tray out of some 1/4 aluminum diamond plate I had leftover from another project. Once it was cut the edges needed to be smoothed. The Ryboi sander was perfect to hone down the sharp edges. The adjustable belt on top was perfect for getting just the right angle I needed since the tray had many irregular curves. The unit has enough power for me and my small DIY projects. I am impressed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Motor failed After about 10 uses, the motor failed. Threw the switch and it just hummed. Took it back to HD, they plugged it in, and it ran. Brought it home and it ran once, then went back into hum mode. Fortunately, HD made good on an exchange. Kudos to them for customer service. When it was working, the sander seemed to have a lot of vibration. Was expecting a smoother run. Am guessing that the disk is not truly round, or not centered on the spindle after the set screw is tightened. Otherwise, it did what a benchtop belt sander is supposed to do. For the money, I guess it's an OK tool...not horrible, but not what I expected from Ryobi. I have other Ryobi tools of better quality than this one. I read all the reviews here and on Amazon before buying...I know others have had good luck with this tool, and some don't like it. I can understand the mixed reviews. Pretty fair value, but make no mistake--it's an entry level tool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for my little workshop needs I've been looking and finally decided on the Ryobi Belt/Disc Sander for my little home workshop. I'm a novice woodworker, making ukulele's and associated tools, and this is the perfect sander - cost effective, belt and disc operation, benchtop size, does a great job. And I'm making a "tool" to fit under the Belt drive to use as a Thickness Sander of sorts. I'm very happy with this sander as I am with all the Ryobi products that I have purchased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good DIY tool I have this tool for some time now and the best thing in it is the dual sand, disc and band, sanding is getting easier when I don’t have the sander on my hand, my problem is the dust port doesn’t really work, dusk goes all over. Almost every one of my projects has to get to the sander, store this sander is not too bad as you ll see on the picture. I’m happy with this tool and I’ll keep using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sander for the Money I wouldn't expect to give a $120 sander a 5 star review, but this one earns it for its excellent value. There are more rugged sanders out there, obviously. But our Scout troop was impressed enough with the first two of these that we bought a year ago that we just bought two more. First, the 4"x36" belt tracks well and is easy to adjust with the knob on the side. It doesn't keep trying to run off the edge while you sand. You can slow down or stop the belt if you really bear down on it, but if you use it in a normal fashion, it has plenty of power... especially when compared to some of the other brands of sanders of the same price we have since discarded. Changing the belt is extremely easy and takes mere seconds. I recently ran one of these sanders non-stop for an hour and a half grinding a knife, and it never slowed or got too hot. So again, I give this sander 5 stars because of it's price value. It may not be enough if you are a professional shop using it every day for hours and hours, but it is more than enough sander for the average garage user. So far, none of the four Ryobi sanders we own have let our troops down while sanding pinewood derby cars, bows, or any other wood working project.
