Questions & Answers

What is difference between 5Ah and 3Ah?

Asked by: Frank
The Ryobi 5Ah battery is used in the Ryobi 40-volt line of products. My research concluded the Ryobi 3Ah battery belongs to the Ryobi 18-volt line of products. I am new to recently researching the Ryobi pole saws, Expand-It line and batteries so if I have missed something please reply.

has anyone else had a issue with this battery only running for 5 minutes then shutting off on a fully charged battery?

when using this battery in the push mower it when using the battery in the mower it will run for 5-15 minutes then just shut off and then the only way to get it to work is to pull it out and put it back in the mower then it runs good again. Is this just me or does it happen to others?
Asked by: THDcustomer
Yes, I am now on battery #3; the first two had exactly that problem. Ryobi's 40V tools would be great if they would manage designing a reliable battery circuit; I almost doubt that the batteries themselves can be that bad, i.e. my money is on the control boards. Both previous batteries died after less than 10 uses. I wished I would have bought the corded variant.

How long does it take to charge this battery? If I run through the whole charge mowing my whole lawn, do I have to wait until the next day to finish mowing, or does this charge quickly enough to go back out in a few hours to finish?
Asked by: Christina
No, I have found I can charge it for a couple of hours & get another 1/2 hr mowing done.

Can I leave my 40V or 20V Ryobi 5Ah or 2.6 or 1.5 Ah Lithium battery plugged in the Ryobi charger for extended period while not in use in the tool? I though those chargers have smart circuit to prevent overcharging and damaging the battery.
Asked by: Carlos
It is best to unplug once you are fully charged and also after use let the battery cool down some before plugging charger in, The book will tell you to remove from charger once it is charged. I have had several batteries die prematurely because they were left on the charger and plugged in. I used to leave charge them in the garage but now I charge them in the kitchen where I can see them so that I can unplug as soon as they have charged.

RYOBI 40-Volt Lithium-Ion 5 Ah High Capacity Battery is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1716.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This should be the standard battery for at least the mower. I have been using the 40v mower and weed eater for about 6 years now. I got the mower that came with the 2 batteries and ended up having to buy the weed eater mainly because I did not want to spend $100 on just a battery. It took all 3 batteries to do my lawn and weed eat. That was brand new as they got older it was taking 4 1/2 batteries which meant to finish had to charge them. I have to say with the old batteries I did miss a gas mower. If I would have had this battery from the start I would have been much happier and would have never missed the old gas mower. The one battery did the entire back yard and most of the front. Not to mention there were places where the other batteries would bog down and make me go at a snail pace or go over an area twice. The 40v 5ah did not do this I could go at the same pace for the entire time. If you own the mower I would highly recommend this battery. I don't understand why this battery is not sold in my store. I can only get the regular one.

I bought the snow blower and the self-propelled lawn mower each with 2 batteries each. That is 4 very expensive batteries to replace. They were both bought in December 2018. One battery would not take a charge out of the box. Took it back and they replaced it no problem. Another battery did the same thing. Went back to exchange it. Now you have to call an 800 number to report that you have a defective battery. Still trying to get in touch with someone from RYOBI about this battery. So within a year 50% of my batteries were defective. .500 % is only good in baseball not $150.00 battery. When will the other batteries go bad.

The Ryobi 5 Ah batteries met my expectations and continue to perform very well. I can mow my small yard (about 7000 sq ft) and then use the same battery to trim everything as well and still have at least 25% power left in the battery. I bought 2 of these batteries so I can also use 1 battery in my Ryobi hedge trimmer to trim the bushes/hedge around the yard and then clean it all up with my Ryobi blower, all without stopping in the middle of a job to recharge a battery. I still have the 4.5 Ah battery that came with the Ryobi 20" mulching mower, so I always have a 40V power supply ready to go. The only problem I have encountered is with the mower handle clamp on the right side (where the start & safety switch cable runs) popping loose and that causes the mower to shut down. It took me a little while to figure out why the mower was shutting down multiple times during a mowing job as the loose clamp wasn't obvious. But I will address that issue in a review of the mower. These 5Ah batteries are great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Turns the mower into a power house! I wanted to get my parents something for helping me out and finding them a gift is always hard. They have both the Ryobi 40V mower and trimmer (and lots of other ryobi stuff!) They enjoy them but I noticed that it was going through batts pretty quickly and when I used it at their house the power was not gas type power. So I was reading reviews on this and thought it would be a nice gift. Turns out it was! My mother used it the first time and called me about how amazing it made the mower and it had power like a gas mower. Plus it got through so much more of the yard without having to change batts! She mowed again yesterday and I got another call raving about how amazing it was. They have not tried it on the trimmer yet, I am thinking they are afraid it may be to powerful. ;) I will try and give an updated review once they have had it a little longer to see how it holds up. So far it is a good purchase. It is a little pricey but all 40V are.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed with the 40volt battery system to say the least This was the second 5AH battery I purchased in as many weeks. Both died, showed "Defective" on the charger, the first was after one use and the second after two. In total I had 5 batteries do this in less than two months. I first purchased the string trimmer kit, then I purchased the hedge trimmer. Don't get me wrong both of the tools worked GREAT, they really did. The problem is with the batteries and/or the charger or me. I tried to find an answer. I read all the manuals, yes I did read all the manuals. I contacted Ryobi Customer Support numerous times to see if it was something I was doing wrong. I went to several "service centers" at their suggestion to get the batteries and charger looked at. In both cases they could do nothing more than plug in my charger put my batteries in and wait, they then looked up at me and said "yep they are defective". So I still don't know if it was something I was doing or the batteries and/or the charger. I got tired of the run around so I returned everything because I could not get an answer.

Last year I decided to buy an extra battery so I could avoid the 2 day affair of re-charging the battery and I could do it in one afternoon. That lasted a few months. Now with a 5 AH and a 4 AH I can't finish mowing my lawn (and it is not huge)... I am sad that I am feeling that I need a 3rd battery to be able to finish up in a shift. I use a lot of Ryobi tools (have a collection) but these 40V batteries are expensive and are not keeping up with my yard... I truly would not have to build up a collection of these in order to mow my entire lawn (>1/4 acre) in one afternoon!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Serious Battery Issue I have the 40 volt battery blower weed cutter. When the battery is good I love the product! But I have a serious issue with the batteries/charger. I have had my set for a couple year now and am now on my 5th battery. The last service support indicated to me that if I leave the battery in the charger at full charge it will damage the battery! So I am damaging the battery by not removing as soon as its full. Now I own a number of other tools which are battery operated and have never had an issue such as this. I was informed that this battery/charger setup does not have a auto shutdown feature while their 18 volt system does have the feature. This is a serious DESIGN FLAW, as a user I need to put my battery into the charger for charging and storage so it's ready when I'm ready to do a job. I have had batteries replaced so far but the original warranty period is almost finished so at that time I will have to move to a different platform unless they get this fixed! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long Lasting power. Lot's of Power. I have the 20" Ryobe 40v Battery powered Mower and wow am I impressed at the raw power from the 40v battery. My lot is 120' X 85' and the battery lasts until the end with a pinch of power to go. I should mention that my mower is the Self Propelled model. Recharging the battery takes about 2.5hrs and is easy to put into the charger. I have taken a break between my front yard and my back, gave the battery a charge during that time and that extra charge inabled me to even cut my neighbors front yard. A good friend has a few 40v Ryobe yard tools. In the weedwaker it has power to cut even thick grass and the Blower puts out intense power. At the shop I've seen it last for a long time before needing a recharge. I also have a line up of Ryobe 18v Drills and equipment, the 40v blows it away, yet I'm very happy with my Ryobe battery tools. Sure there are several brands to choose from, but using Ryobe Tools for a few years, it's among the best you can buy. You won't be dissapionted when you buy and anything that uses the 40v battery will amaze you with the power and long battery life. I put all the Ryobe lineup as Recommend to Buy. The 40v system, absoluitely! You won't return it, you'll love it. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
