My son-in-law is 6'4". Will he be comfortable driving this mower?

Asked by Tracey June 12, 2021

Answer

I'm 6'2, 260# and this is the MOST COMFORTABLE rider I've ever owned. Previously I had a Poulan Pro 42" 18hp and a Wheel Horse Charger 10. My brother-in-law has one, too and he's 6'4" too.

Hello I am big guy. Will this affect the operation of this mower? Thanks

My guess is that the additional weight could possibly slightly shorten the mower battery power run time, but the mower seems to have sufficient power to move my 300 lb rider weight.

I'm 6'5" 200lb, I feel a bit silly as the seat itself is short in the back, but aside from that, plenty of leg room, no issues there for my height. I couldn't answer on the weight though, as i'm 110lb less, but I do fit fine myself.

What is the difference between the RM480e and RM480ex?

Asked by Markos June 10, 2021

Answers

Some additional thoughts on the differences between the two models of the RM480s. The actual run times of these mowers is subject to a number of variables. The amount of grass being cut off, the density of the turf, the moisture content of the turf being cut, the ground speed of the mower, the square footage being mowed, and whether you are bagging, mulch mowing, or side discharging all factor heavily into the run time. One key thing to take into consideration is how much you plan to mow with each usage. The less you discharge the battery pack each time you use the machine, the longer the lifespan the batteries should have. For example, my 34 month old RM480e is used an average of 45 minutes with each use. I mow a 10,000 sf lawn and a 16,000 sf lawn. If I mow both together on the same charge, the mower will run for abut an hour and a half and have plenty of charge left, or it might be down to the two red bars signaling the end of the usable charge. Since I rarely mow both lawns back to back, my 75 ahr. batteries are sized just fine. One of my neighbors (there are four RM480s on my street of 16 homes) has a RM480ex and mows twice what I do, plus he plows snow and tows ground contact implements, so his 100 ahr. batteries are better suited for his use. If you can swing the extra money for the 100 ahr. model, I recommend it as it will lengthen the potential lifespan of the batteries

Susie, thank you for your interest in the RYOBI 48V Brushless 38 in. 100 Ah Battery Electric Rear Engine Riding Lawn Mower. This sounds like an issue with the blade or the shaft. You will need to see if it is bent. Depending on what is broken, you will either be able to change the blade or need to take the mower in for service repair. Battery Failure and Bad Customer Service
This unit arrived in June 2020. At first, I was able to mow my yard (~.70 acres) and had plenty in battery reserve when done. It worked great until I noticed that the run time decreasing in the Fall 2020 timeframe. I didn't pay attention at first and thought the problem would resolve itself while being attached to the charger in the coming months. I started mowing in April 2020 and immediately notice that my run-time has decreased to 20-25 minutes. It would take the whole day to mow the lawn because I had to move and charge the unit several times. At first, I was willing to deal with this until the day I only got 5 minutes of run time. At that point I decided take advantage of the warranty to swap out the batteries since I've had the unit for less than a year. I called Ryobi customer support who said that I needed to take the batteries and the charger to an approved Service Center who handle these types of returns which in this case was a Home Depot store that was 1 hour away. So I disassembled the unit and removed each of the 4 50lb batteries along with verifying that they need to be replaced by running a test on them with a FOXWELL BT705 battery tester that I purchased for $130. Before driving to this store which was 1 hour away which also required me to leave work early I called the Home Depot tool rental department to verify that this will accept this type of return, which they did. When I get to the store lugging 200lbs of batteries and explaining my situation the person at the tool rental department said they don't do this type of return and did not even know that Ryobi had a battery-powered riding lawn mower. I then talked to a manager in the Returns department who listen to my frustration, made several internal phone calls, and then walked me back to the same person who insisted that they don't do these types of returns and ask him to process this. The person did eventually process this, gave me a work order and I left the store 3 hours later. Now, fast forward, I call the store 2 weeks later and asked the person a status of the batteries. It sounds like the person who I originally encountered picks up the phone and states that it has been shipped and that there is no ETA on the return. I said fine, I'll call next week to check on the status. I call on week 3 and get a different person who said the batteries and the charger are still there!!! I wasn't a happy camper because I was lied to and I can see Ryobi not honoring the 1-year warranty because the date of when they receive the batteries will be more than 1-year. I can honestly see that no action will ever be taken and that I will be left in limbo. I'm infuriated how this is being handled. Why couldn't Home Depot or Ryobi just send me the replacement batteries? There is a 12V 75 AMP battery by Mighty Battery in stock that Home Depot could have given me in the meantime. But now I have a $3,000 riding mower in my garage that is useless of which I have no idea on when these batteries will be replaced and now I have to pay $100 a week to have my lawn mowed. Should I just go back to the store get my charger back and buy $600 worth of batteries? Is this what Home Depot and Ryobi calls customer service? If so, I'll make sure that I never buy anything from Home Depot and Ryobi.

Better Power
Nice to have a electric mower. Just wish I could cut my lawn without the blades stopping. I know it works better with the lawn being short but that's not feasible sometime. So, for the loot you spend on this machine, it should be more powerful. Other than that, it's cool.

I really want to love this machine, but in order for it to sense me on the seat I have to carry a 12 pound weight on my lap, otherwise it stops mowing. I'm a 130 pound female and never had this problem with my older mower from a different company. Because I literally have to carry a weight on my lap, I drive one handed and have a difficult time managing any of the bumps or slight inclines while mowing. I'm hoping that there is some explanation/solution so I can enjoy this machine and recommend it to other people I know.

Tire issue!!!
I waited 2 weeks for this thing to arrive and was excited to cut the jungle that has grown on my yard. I was towards the end of assembling the Mower and noticed the one front tire looked slightly flat. I tried pumping it but it refused to hold air. It was stuck on 5 PSI and everytime I tried putting some more air it would just seep out through the inflation valve. This machine is too expensive and took too long to arrive to be having issues and it’s absolutely frustraing. To top it off Home Depot sells it but doesn’tcarry any spare products in store. Might have to return it depending on how quick RYOBI or Home Depot can send me a spare tire. I’m ridiculously upset and disappointed at this whole purchase.

Thirty Two Months With A Ryobi RM480e
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The mower has run nearly flawlessly for almost three years. It has had two issues. Both were fixed under warranty by Ryobi with phone calls. I mulch mow exclusively and the mower has cut my dense turf lawn cleanly with no clumping or tracking of clippings lying about. It tows a loaded 7 cu. ft. dump cart with ease. I added a fold up tailgate to carry a trash can for yard work. The mower is highly maneuverable and can slowly creep around obstacles easily. The blades hold a fine cutting edge all during the seven month mowing season, so I only put on a freshly sharpened set of blades at the end of the season when I put the mower into winter storage. Winter storage consists of parking the mower and leaving it plugged into the charger all winter. The system (custom Delta-Q SC-48 charger) uses no electricity until the battery pack voltage falls below 50 volts. The maintenance charges cost pennies. The second set of blades are the only maintenance items that I have purchased for this machine. The only other maintenance is to clean the underside of the deck regularly, just like any mower. I regularly mow a 10,000 sq. ft. lawn and an occasional 16,000 sq. ft. lot, so each usage time is less than the maximum run time for the mower. This mower was brand new technology to me, so I spent a lot of time learning about it. I learned it is pretty close to a golf cart with a mower deck, but much more complex. I measure the voltage of the battery pack and the recharge wattage to monitor battery performance as the mower ages. I track the usage and storage charges with a spreadsheet to see actual costs. The mower has been a joy to own and operate. The quietness, ease of operation, low cost, and lack of maintenance make using and owning the machine real pleasure. There are now four Ryobi RM480 mowers on my street of 16 homes. Some numbers tell the true story of owning this mower: My electricity cost is $0.13/Kwh. Total cost of 32 months of operation is $48.12 Total cost of electricity for 32 months is $19.15 Total number of hours of use is 73.3 Total number of charge cycles is 159 Cost of electricity per hour of operation is $0.22 Average electricity cost per year of winter storage is $1.08

Its a decent ride on, plenty fast and near silent when mowing. The ride comfort is lacking but I think a better tire/wheel combo would help out with that. The charging system is robust and the battery packs a punch. I’m mowing about 1 acre with no slow down. Aside from the ride comfort and the safety chime when you leave the seat, I’m happy with my purchase.

Bought this mower about 5 months ago. It's a good mower, but lots of things on it just feel cheaply made. When you press on the gas pedal it has to go down 1/4th the way before the motors will engage, making it annoying to drive sometimes. The steering column feels not so solid and shakey, and there is no suspension to be had.. expect a very bumpy ride. When I went to remove the blades to change them to the bagging blades, I found it insanely difficult to loosen the nuts. The nuts had become fused to the metal plates below and started to turn the entire plate along with the nut. The turning metal plate ripped up the spacer's edges and still didn't come off. Had to use an impact wrench to loosen the nuts after that, but one of the spacers is now destroyed and I will need to wait to have a new one shipped to safely use my mower. Oh, and they charged me $8 for the spacer, guess it's not covered under the warranty.

Great mower
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This mower is amazing. Lots of power to the blades. Mow a couple hours on my properties. Half of the charge left to do more. Mulching works very well. No more gas to mess with. Very satisfied. Wife loves it. Highly recommend!

First time rider
I was a riding mower virgin so keep that in mind. Assembly of the unit was easy and without issue. Yesterday was my first time actually using a riding mower so I don’t have anything to compare it to. My lawn is challenging since I live on a hill. This mower did an awesome job on my lawn, I just had to go slow due to my terrain. Turning circle is great. Cut was nice and even. I have 1.76 acres of land. I think the issue people have initially with the battery is with somewhat wet grass collecting there. The mower began to sound different so I stopped and the deck had lots of wet grass stuck to it. It took 5 minutes to clear and I was back in the saddle. Going down hill the mower felt sturdy when I let off of the gas. Finally make sure you clean the deck after use. It seems like a good mower, didn’t give it 5 stars because only time will tell.

More than just a lawn tractor
Headline first. I tow my 5,000 boat/trailer with the Ryobi. I know, probably not recommended. I have a tight garage and driveway so I attached a bumper trailer hitch on the front and had to build a trailer dolly for the rear. The Ryobu trailer attachment can not support the 1,000 tongue weight of the boat trailer... what a surprise... so I had to build a dolly to distribute the weight of the tongue. Anyways, the Ryobi pushed the boat out of the garage and pulls the boat into the garage.. Awesome ! It's a 21ft SCOUT. My only issue is cutting high, thick grass. the right mower blade cuts off so now I cut twice taking about 1/2" at a time if I let the grass mow too long. Otherwise, awesome tractor !
