Questions & Answers

Hi. Can you use this on metal? I have some radiators and a steel door that needs sanding before painting.

Asked by JenyLyn November 14, 2020

Hi Jenlyn, Thanks for your question and I apologize for the delay in response. Yes, the RYOBI 6 Amp Corded 3 in. x 18 in. Portable Belt Sander BE319 can be used on metal with the correct sanding belt. When sanding metal to remove rust or to deburr an edge, you shouldn't use sandpaper with a grit coarser than 220. The higher the sanding grit the finer the sand. I would suggest a 320 grit or higher. I hope this helps and thanks for reaching out to us! - Eve

For the sand belts themselves, do you need to buy a certain brand, or will any 3x18 brand fit?

Asked by EDP July 25, 2020

I've used two separate brands and they both worked fine.

Hello Albert, This RYOBI BE319 6 Amp Corded 3 in. x 18 in. Portable Belt Sander does not have variable speed. Thanks for asking and I apologize for the delay in response. - Eve

Asked by Dax7 June 18, 2020

Hello Dax7, thank you for your question. The RYOBI 6 Amp Corded 3 in. x 18 in. Portable Belt Sander does not offer any mounting points, so we do not recommend mounting the sander. - Justin

Asked by Lorraine June 2, 2020

This is a wood belt sander and not a metal sander .there are sanders that are specific to metal finishing and grinding And they wont melt from heat and sparks.

Why isn't the sawdust going into the bag?

Small, but mighty.
Decided to refinish the hardwoods in my bedroom before repainting they walls (600 sq ft, roughly). Loads of damage from the last decades and not proper care with prior owners. All walk-behind sanders were rented out at all stores near me so I took a chance and went for this one based off sale price and an even split of reviews pos/neg. This little thing has power! The dust bag sucks but I connected my shop vac to the back and that helped tremendously. It’s time consuming given the machine for use in a decent sized room, but it did the job well. I went with 36>60>80 grit sequence and it was perfect. Bought a 5-pack of each grit paper and used 3 of the 36 & 60, 2 of the 80 (mainly cause of my pickiness but 1 would’ve been enough). Photos are the before and afters - you can see the damage I was working with; so bad! I purchased this house knowing it was a fixer upper and my room had the floors of the house with the damage. Overall I would recommend this for smaller rooms and projects if you don’t mind the workout - it served its purpose really greatly much to my surprise. I’m happy with my purchase and now have added a new Ryobi tool to my growing collection. \m/

eats cords and belts
I wanted a belt sander that didn't cost an arm and leg. pretty much was going to recycle after the job. that said within the first 5 hours I ran over the cord and sucked it into the machine. not really the housing is to high in the rear and the cord on the back side is positioned so it is to easy to catch. I 'm pretty skilled with tools and I did this same thing 3 times even watching for it. last time let the smoke out. So I retired the machine after about 10 hours. I found a less expensive solution else where.

needed a sander that wasn't too much and wouldn't get out of control on a first time user and this one does the job, the sanding belt that comes with it didn't last too long but it got me thru the basics on learning how to use it and that was would have been nice for ryobi to have a basic " BELT SANDING FOR DUMMIES" guide book but there's really only 3 things to deal with ( the Dust Bag , the Belt release switch , and the belt adjuster ) used this to sand down my deck for re-staining and it did the job perfectly

You get what you pay for!
I’ve had this for 2 months and used on only two projects (table tops). As others have stated it pulls the sand paper and causes it to rub tearing up the paper. The back wheel on mine has also melted! Seems to be some sort of cheap rubber. Now the sand paper won’t rotate. Obviously I’m out of the return window so it looks like this will make its way to the trash can and I will not purchase another Ryobi tool again!

This little booger knocks out some serious sanding! Like all belt sanders you have to constantly fiddle with the adjustment so the sandpaper doesn't "walk" off the belt and of course the bag needs emptying constantly but that's just part of the joy of sanding. One thing you have to be especially careful of (not sure why it's so with this particular sander) is backing the sander over its own cord! Yeah, I know you're probably thinking only an idiot would do that and you're absolutely right but when it happens to you don't say you weren't warned! Luckily this powerful little guy is only about $50 to replace and HD always has a pile of them in stock. HIGHLY recommended!

Sanded our deck, the belt sander worked great
Customer review from logo
I bought the belt sander to sand the deck to remove the old stain that the power washer didn't knock off. Used it for a few hours and using a medium grit sandpaper worked nicely

Easy to use and powerful
Customer review from logo
I have always only had a palm sander but when I decided to really do an extensive job of cleaning and sanding the finish off my old deck, I thought it was time to upgrade to a belt sander. The sander worked great, was easy to use and powerful enough for the job along with being reasonably priced.
