Questions & Answers

Do I need to purchase any specials extension cords, or will the standard ones work.
ByAug 14, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hello, Eash - Standard outdoor-rated extension cords with 3‑prong plugs/receptacles are suitable; no special proprietary cords are required. We recommend using grounded (3‑prong) outdoor extension cords and selecting a wire gauge appropriate for your load and cord length to avoid voltage drop and overheating. I own this generator. However, I need to know the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of its 240VAC (or 120VAC) outputs, (typical is 3-6%), as I want to charge my solar battery generator system via its 240VAC 30 amp input connector. Can you find out for me

    Answer This Question

Hello, Walkthewalk - This generator is below 20% THD. It typically runs at 15-18%. It will be almost the same whether you are using the 120V or 240V outlets. Our inverter generators will be less than 3% THD.  If you need further support, then feel free to ask another question. Will not handle 6500 watts.
I’ve owned this generator for 6 hours and it is garbage. The outlets are constantly tripping despite us having only a refrigerator and an air conditioner running off of it. Do not waste your money on this one it is garbage and best of all you can’t even return them after you open the box so now I’m stuck with a 900 dollar piece of trash.

Worked great for 80 hours, now it’s expensive garbage
I purchased this item in February 2023. I used it for a 2.5 day power outage. After that I ran it for 5 minutes every month to make sure it was running well. My power went out last night. I ran it for about 12 hours, shut it off to refuel, and it started right back up. At that point there was no power coming from the outlets. An error code suggests a bad PCB. This was apparently a known problem with these that may have been fixed since. You cannot buy the repair part, as Ryobi discontinued that part because it has a high failure rate. Google tells me an authorized repair would cost $500-$600. That’s almost as much as the product itself. I ran this generator for 80 hours, and it is now useless to me. I recently started converting to Ryobi for my battery operated tools and equipment, including the recent purchase of a snowblower and chainsaw. I have been shopping Ryobi lawnmowers, but not now. I plan on talking to Ryobi customer service to see if they will make this right since there are only about 80 hours on the clock. If they won’t work for me I will never buy another Ryobi product.

Repairman told me to buy another brand
I purchased this generator before a hurricane just in case of power failure. It worked the first two times I used it. After that it was a no go. I used fuel stabilizer when I stored the generator and every two to three months I would start the generator. After six months the fuel line popped. I store the generator in a climate controlled environment away from pest. I later found out from the repairman that there isnt a fuel shutoff switch for this generator. So when I run it i should run it dry, then drain the fuel line. Now the generator won't start at all. I'm going to sell this thing and buy a different brand.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Used this generator one time in 2023. Tried using it in 2024, started up then started sputtering and spitting out of carburetor. Actually burnt a hole through plastic air cleaner cover. Will not start now. Oil good, changed plug. Nothing!

Generator is slightly less worthless than warranty
First use and the gas pours straight to ground instead of to engine. Warranty is useless since the nearest service shop (to Seattle) is 150 miles away. I can ship at my own expense, while the generator is 200 lbs. obviously they didn’t design it this way, but no answer as to how to solve it without lots of costs

                                Defective out of the box
Similar experience to other recent reviewers: When starting up, no outlets produced power. HD refuses to refund an opened box. Ryobi Support only suggests we deliver it ourselves to a service center over 50 miles away. The Protection Plan basically did nothing. I will not be buying Ryobi products or any Home Depot protection plans in the future.

                                  Defective Generator
We bought a Ryobi 6,500-watt generator from Home Depot for $899 ahead of Hurricane Milton. Two of the five outlets don’t work, and it can’t handle our fridge’s load, even with proper cords. Ryobi said to disable the fridge’s defrost button—something not in the manual! We lost all our food during 125 hours without power. Ryobi won’t issue an RGA number for a return, instead directing us 61 miles for service. Please help resolve this!
