Can this be used to remove/uproot the bermuda grass for small areas (5'X5')?

Can this be used to remove/uproot the bermuda grass for small areas (5'X5')?
Asked by: VJ
While possible (especially with a gas unit running the cultivator) the only true method of killing Bermuda grass is chemical else it will simply regrow. Best results for me have always been RoundUp for Bermuda grass.

Asked by: jes
Hi, Jes- This is just the lower attachment part. You'll need an attachment-capable power head such as gas model RY251PH or cordless model RY40225. We do offer a cordless kit that comes with everything you need. If you're interested, please check out model RY40770. We hope this helps!

Will this work on my ryobi 18in. 10 amp electric string trimmer RY41135. It says, it is attachment capable.
Asked by: Lee
Yes it will work. I used it with my RY41135 this weekend. It was especially effective in my raised bed where the soil is not compact. I worked well enough on cutting in to compacted clay soil. It does not cut deeply or quickly in to my compact soil. I had to made numerous passes to get a few inches deep but I don't expect it to cut as deeply as a dedicated gas-powered tiller/cultivator. I did what I need it to do.

It was easy to put together and I didn't need any tools to assemble it. I like that the tines can be configured several different ways. The tool and the tines are more substantial than I thought they would be. It feels like a solid tool. It also performed like a solid tool. Attaching the cultivator to the power head was easy to do.The power head I attached it to is the one that came with the 40520 string trimmer that has a brushed motor and a 4ah battery. I also bought an extra 4ah battery and charger. Even though the trimmer has a brushed motor it had plenty of power to drive the cultivator and it did an excellent job tilling up my raised planter boxes. I have four 4 x 8, four 3 x 6, one 3 x 12, and one 3 x 24 planter boxes. The first time I used it there were a lot of weeds in the boxes and I went through both 4ah batteries. The second time I used it a week later I was able to get through all the boxes on one battery. The cultivator has some good weight to it but it's not too heavy. I think it has a good balance of weight but light enough to maneuver easily.

The issue I ran into was with the power head. I bought the 40v brushless attachment capable string trimmer last year. I now have the trimmer, edger, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, and cultivator attachments. I love it as a product. I would recommend if you are just starting a garden to go on ahead and rent a full size cultivator for the day to get your yard tilled up. Then this will be perfect going forward. Or if you are doing a raised garden bed and starting with the fertilizer and soil this would be perfect too. But to start out the garden by tilling up grass was really rough. I did a 10'x10' section and it took 1/4 of the 5Ah battery. So my guess is this could do 300 sq ft before bogging down. But that is too much to do in one go in my opinion anyways unless you have someone to trade off with. So the battery charging really wasn't an issue. My one biggest complaint, and this is also somewhat the power head, is the handle attachments. They attach directly to a smooth bar. So it doesn't really matter how much you tighten it. The vibrations from the work make the handle slide around. Not up and down, but just side-to-side. It was really frustrating. They need to figure out a way to secure the handle better so it doesn't move.

I've never cultivated soil before, but I truly wanted to plant a garden this year. I love the Ryobi Expand It Universal Power Head and already had great success pruning and clearing with the Pole Saw attachment and String Trimmer. So I sold myself on gathering all things Ryobi! I'm an old wild woman in her sixties and I burst out with laughter when I saw how easy the cultivator was to use. A well designed product that even I could manage with ease. The 40-volt battery tilled an 8 feet by 30 feet area of hard-packed Georgia Red clay with power to spare. I'm on to the brush cutter attachment next!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Used it first day and love it I used this for the first time today and it fit right onto my Craftsman weed eater. Tilled up a small area to plant a blueberry bush and it did great. I was a little skeptical, but, I will say THIS THING WORKS! It tilled the soil up and it looked like potting soil when I was finished. I then took it out to "weed" my 20' x 30' garden. It is small enough so I could cultivate between rows which is exactly what I was looking for. As everyone else has said before, to be most effective, you have to pull backwards while cultivating. I really like the equipment, but man is it heavy. I did about 1/3 of my garden and I was feeling it. The garden looked great when I was done so I have no complaints about the effectiveness of the equipment. The weight of the attachment is a little overwhelming. I am a large guy and semi strong, yet this thing is a beast to work with. I gave it 3 stars only because of the weight, other than that this thing rocked! I would recommend this as it seems like a great piece of equipment, but only to people who can handle the weight of it. I will continue to use it as it cultivates great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works well if you can handle it. I am pleased! I purchased the Ryobi expand-it cultivator attachment because it has better reviews than more expensive brands, Also, buying it cost less than renting a tiller for a day. It attached easily to my cub cadet 4 cycle power head. I added 5 pounds extra weight to the attachment which makes for a heavy combination. The extra weight reduces the bouncing of the cultivator. Don't consider this attachment if you have back or shoulder problems. Using this cultivator gives them both a work out. Pulling it backwards works best. Rocking it side to side helps it penetrate hard soil. Be warned! When it hits large roots, rocks, or tough soil, it can bounce hard! Otherwise, I am pleased with its performance. It tilled a 20 x 20 foot garden of loose soil in 30 minutes. New ground takes at least twice as long. Don't try to force it. Be patient, it will till a garden, and you will get a good work out. As for reliability, I have only run it for about 8 hours so far. Hopefully, it will last several years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not experienced with similar tools I had never used a cultivator before, but wanted to go above and beyond to address some bare spots in the yard. The soil was so compacted and hard at first I was a little disappointed in the results, but changed the blade alignment to the rocky soil; although there were very few rocks, this did work much better. So much easier and more effective than hand raking/tilling, hope the grass seed appreciates the effort [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful tool This is the second that I've owned. The first lasted for over 10 years, but a bushing finally broke. This is a useful tool for small areas. I have a 10x8ft garden that i use this in, and also for flower bed prep. It takes some work to go deep, but a full size tiller would not be practical nor would it fit into some of the areas I need it to. I'd buy another, but hopefully not for another 10 years or so. While not effortless in operation with a bit of weight to manage, this tool did the job for my small project of leveling some disturbed earth from a sewer line replacement last fall. It tilled the unevenly piled soil just fine for me to rake even and seed. I think it would be good for a small garden or flower bed. A plus is it doesn't take up much room in the garage when work is done & less maintenance of a tiller with its' own motor.
