Can this read through glass?
Asked by: cliu122
Infrared light (IR) travels through normal glass however some glass is formulated to absorb or reflect IR. Your results will vary depending on the type of glass.

Is this NIST-Traceable Calibration?

Is this NIST-Traceable Calibration?
Asked by: Emil
This is not a precision measuring device. It does not come with a certificate of calibration. The manufacturer's specifications listed on the package state that it is accurate and consistent to +/- 5 degrees Celsius, which is 9 degrees Fahrenheit. 9 Degrees variance is not suitable for precision cooking or troubleshooting an AC system. There are much better IR thermometers at the same price, such as the Commercial Electric MS6520H, which have a max variance of only 5 degrees Fahrenheit. I have not opened the case yet to see if there are any possible adjustments for calibration.

(Ryobi IR002 SKU 33287 16489) After you buy it and read the folded up piece of paper inside called the "operator's manual" you learn it measures only at 2' away! I would not have bought it had that been on the outside of the package. (Home Depot has a link to this document in its listing, which I didn't check before buying). It's stated accuracy is +/- 5 degrees, which I under appreciated. Other temp guns are accurate to +/- 1 or 2 degrees. A check on my wall thermostat from 2' led to a reading 4 degrees below my thermostat. Then a repeat check led to a temperature readinng 8 degeees below my thermostat. My attempts to read anything at say 15' away like the exterior wall of my home or a ceiling air register led to unpredictable measurements within that 10 degree range. Any hope of calibrating it against my trusty glass bulb thermometer to learn that it maybe consistently reads 2-3 degrees cold were impossible because of inconsistent readings. I have owned better temperature guns that work up to 30-40' away, and are cosistent in reported readings, and are accurate to 1 degree. I misplaced my last one and I bought this one trying to replace it. At discount tool stores I can get one for about half the cost of this one, and I have had pretty good value from Ryobi's other tools, so I thought I wasn't buying the bottom of the market quality. However, this one goes back to the store and I will spend more for a better one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Entertainment Purposes Only I needed a IR thermometer so I grabbed this at the local HD and later bought a Kline IR1000. I was dong some AC work and measuring the basic temp split between return and supply so I took the opportunity to compare the Ryobi to the Kline. The Ryobi measures consistently 5-10 degrees higher than the Kline which I guess is within the specs for this unit. When I need accurate measurements I use a thermocouple and meter but when I'm taking a snapshot using an IR I would at least like to be somewhere close. The Kline is more expensive but it also has an accuracy of 1.5% so measuring 75 degrees it would be within a 1.125 degree swing not 5-10 degrees. I would say pass and get a more accurate unit unless you just want to play around. Picture 1 - Fieldpiece ST4 Thermocouple Picture 2 - Kline , Ryobi comparison
