Great features, appropriate response time, ease of
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this product 2 months ago to finish some drywall work. The cutting tool glided through the drywall, allowing a first time user (myself) to finish almost 100sqft of drywall as easy as it was torn down. Including arched doorways and many precision cuts, allowing the drywall to lay nice and flush against the studs on the first try.

An excellent tool for it's specific job!
Before you even open the box, you need to know that this tool is for one job and one job alone: Opening PRECISE holes in Sheetrock (Drywall) ONLY! You are not going to use this tool on wood, particleboard or any other material. For that job, it will do a superb job. I wish I had it when we were recessing security system devices, so it's not just limited to electric boxes. When using, be sure to use both hands to maintain control, as the motor is quite powerful. One undocumented feature is a shut off that will turn the switch to "off" when the battery is removed, preventing an accidental start when putting in a fresh battery. Wear safety glasses when using this tool.
I had no issues cutting half inch drywall. The cut-out tool was able to make quick work of the drywall using a 2Ah battery. The tool has a large grip area that makes controlling your cuts in drywall easy. Using a 2ah battery helps with the balance and control of the tool as you push or pull it through the drywall material.
There isn’t a separate Collet Nut Wrench to keep track of, it is built into the adjustable depth guide. Adjusting the depth guide is very easy using the depth lock lever. The tool comes with 2 cutting bits. One bit is used for cutting through drywall. You can identify the drywall bit by the smooth rounded end that is used like a guide bearing on a router bit. The multi-material cutting bit has sharp point.
I did some research online and found the majority of cut out tool users recommend going counterclockwise when cutting around the outside of an electrical box, vent openings or other protruding object. If you’re cutting around the inside of an opening such as an opening for a window or door cut in a clockwise direction. When working with a wood or tile bit, I’m not sure there is a recommended direction.
I had issues trying to cut wood using the RYOBI multi-material bit supplied with the cut-out tool. I couldn’t get the bit to bite into the dimensional lumber and when cutting plywood, I was only able to cut ¼ inch plywood and that was very difficult. You can see in the image below how the plywood started to burn. I had a hard time trying to control my cutting direction. I did switch over to a 4Ah battery and the tool worked better but a 4Ah battery is heavy and made controlling the tool awkward. In the Operator’s Manual, RYOBI list the only application for this tool is cutting drywall.
I don’t know if a Brushless motor in the tool would work better or switching to Rotozip multi-material cutting bits would help. If you intend to use this tool primarily for word working, a corded cut-out tool would be a better choice. I am going to pick up some of the Rotozip multi-material and tile cutting bits and see if I have better experience.
As a drywall cut-out tool, this is a 5-star tool. But I was hoping this tool would also work easily in ½ thick dimensional lumber and plywood. I have not tried cutting tile yet. I am going to rate this tool a 4-star tool because the tool is a quality tool and easy to use in drywall.
We have several home renovation products on our list to do so we are frequently in need of additional tools which can sometimes be a hassle. We needed a cut out tool and were happy to see this cordless one made by Ryobi. It is part of their 18 volt one + line of products. Considering we already have several tools from this line it made sense to by the tool only from them as we could use the batteries we already have to power it. This eliminates either being limited by a cord or having to buy a battery that may not work with anything else we have. So in some aspects this is also a space saver. It includes two different bits as well as the collet adapter to switch sizes of bits. It does accept 1/8 inch bits as well as 1/4 inch bits so it gives you a bit of flexibility. There is a on board light to help with visibility just like most tools in this line. The wrench being built in to the guide is nice as you never have to worry about being with out it. The fact that they put a lock on switch for continuous cutting is a very appreciated feature. The weight of the units itself seems heavy enough to be well built but not so heavy that it can not be used for long amounts of time. With where the weight is located once a battery is attached it seems well weighted. This make it nice for doing things such as cutting out around outlets power boxes etc. You can keep you cuts nice and tight so you do not get oversize sloppy cuts. The boast that is operates at 28,000 RPM which I can not really speak too but it seemed to have plenty of power and did not drain my battery. Just like with all Ryobi products this comes with the three year manufactures warranty. While this is not a tool we need to use on a daily basis we are very pleased with it and how it operates. It is a welcome addition to our ever growing Ryobi collection!
The RYOBI ONE+ 18 Volt Cordless Cut-Out Tool can certainly save you a lot of time and make the most amateur of drywallers seem very competent. I bought this tool at the recommendation of a friend who hangs drywall for a living, and I’m glad I did. I practiced on a piece of drywall first to get the hang of making cuts, and I soon discovered this tool works best when making cuts in a left to right direction. Cutouts for electrical boxes are a breeze now. And oh, like with all RYOBI tools, the quality is outstanding.
Ryobi has done it again. This is a super nice cut out tool that is easy to use and is so handy. This Tool is a 18volt tool that belongs to Ryobi One + system of tools so the Batteries from your other tools will fit this as well. What’s super nice is that being Battery operates and not a plug in is that you can use it anywhere, this is super convenient when doing remodeling or adding a room where Electricity is not available. This is a well balanced tool with the Battery installed and is not awkward to use. This Tool will accept 1/8 and 1/4 inch bits as it comes with Two interchangeable collets. One of the great things about this tool is that the Collet Tool is built into the depth Gauge, ingenious! How many times have you changed a bit, laid down the Tool and then forgot where you laid it? I have, and this way the tool is always onboard. Another nice feature is that the activation switch cannot be turned on until a Battery is installed in the tool. This will prevent accidental start ups or if the Battery dies during usage and it won’t turn on when new Battery is installed and you forgot to turn it off. Nice! This Tool has a operating speed of 28K RPM which is powerful enough to tackle any job. The Tool also has a LED light to aid in seeing your work. This Tool would be perfect for Home, Professional, or industrial settings and is great when there isn’t electricity available or if you don’t want to run a 100 ft Extension Cord to do everything. This Tool also comes with a 3 Year Warranty to give you piece of mind when purchasing. This is a great tool and you will be happy with ditching the “Cord”.
The ONE+ 18V Cordless Cut-Out Tool is a great hand held tool that has multiple applications at your fingertips. It comes with your basic bits to start with and an on handy board tool for interchanging bits. You can use other Ryobi bits for selected work. The wrench/depth guide is very useful and adjusting to your work depth and having the bright LED.light adds precision and safety while cutting. A great multi-task tool.
This RYOBI 18 volt ONE+ battery-powered side-cutting Cut-Out Drill is ideal for cutting openings in sheetrock to accommodate an electric box, for example – or to make a nice round hole in the ceiling for a light. The drill bits are designed to cut on the long edge rather than the tip. With a battery attached it is about the same weight as a contractor’s drill and well-balanced. The best design is the built-in wrench (nothing to lose) for the chuck. It is also the depth gauge. A swivel tab locks it in place.
The Ryobi ONE+ 18V Cordless Cut-Out Tool is a very slick tool. A lot of thought went into the design of this tool. First of all, it utilizes any of the 18V Lithium ONE+ batteries. It comes with 2 sized Collets: 1/8” and 1/4". The 1/8” uses the standard cut-out bits for this type of tool and the 1/4" could utilize any 1/4" router bit. The Depth-Guide is adjustable for different depths and also doubles as the Collet Nut wrench, so it’s always readily available. The motor is single speed, which is the same as other standard cut-out tools, whether they are corded or cordless. The gray snap-lever under the collet nut allows you to adjust the depth guide or remove it to use the built-in wrench to loosen/tighten the collet nut. A gray button on the side, when pushed in, locks the spindle when changing the bit. A bright LED light also shines, when turned on, to provide lots of light on your work area. Safety was thought of when designing the on/off switch so that it won’t stay locked “on” when the battery is removed. Therefore, it can’t turn on unexpectedly when inserting a fresh battery, thus preventing possible injury. Using a cordless cut-out tool vs a corded tool is highly desirable. This tool has all the features of a corded tool without the hassle of dragging a long extension cord around. I strongly recommend this Ryobi ONE+ tool. I own many Ryobi ONE+ tools, even the older BLUE models, and all have been very good tools and all work off the 18v ONE+ Lithium batteries. Made in China.
