great auger. the 25’ is frustratingly just a little too short for my first application. imissing the clog by onlly feet
Great auger. The power feed and power retract really help. The auger must be rotating to turn hidden corners hidden in the drain pipe. Doing this by hand is frustrating. Would you want to mix a meringue topping with a manual whisk or with a power mixer? “Power mixer” of corse! This auger

    great purchase
Ive read some of the reviews and bought this with an open mind. Most of my power tools are a different brand but i do have a ryobi drill with two batteries already so this was a lower priced option compared to some of the bigger named brands. And i chose the hybrid for the plugin option as well. This thing did the job perfect for my sink clean out. Ive read some of the obstacles with p traps but there should be a way to enter below that or take the p off. But ALSO theres a tip kit with four different tips available to solve your flexible head length issues. Would recommend this to anyone

Very versatile and well built arsenal of tools!
I have been remodeling homes for 30 years plus using all types and manufacturers of power tools with my crew.... 20 plus years ago I saw Ryobi "blue" cordless 12 volt screw guns which were very well balanced. I took a liking to them when they arrived on the scene back then. Years later I and my crew, are very impressed with the quality constructed, mindfully created and very versatile recent line of Ryobi18 volt "green" Cordless tools. FYI, my mechanical engineering background combined with performing all my own tool repairs when necessary allows me to state with confidence these tools are built well and to last. This cordless line is exciting and innovative to me as a contractor and a home owner.. . Including the lawn and landscape tools! I look forward to each new product that they put out on the shelves... Ryobi is a winner in todays tool world in my opinion.

      It's all in the details.
I bought this last year when we were having multiple drains in the house backing up. It's already saved me so much money in plumber costs that it was worth the buy. I bought this model as opposed to the P4001 for a few different reasons. Primarily the parts are replaceable. There are different bits you can get for different types of snaking like the grease cutter bit or the spade bit. With the P4001 you are stuck with the standard bit that comes with it. The drum is also replaceable on this model and a replacement drum is cheaper than the P4001. So if/when my snake gets kinked or too messed up to use I can just buy a replacement drum and I essentially have a new tool again. I also like that it is hybrid. So if the sink starts backing up I don't have to wait for a battery to charge to be able to use it. A few downsides. If you extend the auger too far it won't retract on it's own. There's a little bulb in the snake once you get towards the end. You have to stop it won't stop on its own. If you don't you'll just have to manually pull it back into the drum until it catches enough for it to retract on its own. I really wish they'd have attached the snake to the drum somehow so it doesn't come completely out of the drum. Secondly, the forward and reverse functions are too complicated. You have a forward, neutral, and reverse on the chuck and a forward and reverse by the trigger. You need to match up forward-forward and reverse-reverse. There are two settings (I believe forward-reverse and reverse-forward) that can damage the tool if you set it that way. There's nothing on the tool itself that tells you what's right and wrong, just a little postcard that came with the packaging. Lastly, and this isn't really a fault of the tool so much as something to keep in mind, I would suggest having a smaller auger handy if you have any 90 degree bends in smaller pipes. The snake is a little too rigid for some of those bends and I had trouble getting it in. When I used a smaller snake it worked OK. I just had to find a different entry point for my larger snake.

I bought this product to clear a clogged tub drain. Figured I'd go for the higher priced, presumed better model. Unfortunately, $129.00 later, I still have a clogged drain, a tool that can't do the job and regrets. The main problem with this tool is as follows and described perfectly from another reviewer when I came here searching to see if anyone else had this issue: -The detachable head mechanism forms a non flexible 2-3" section of the auger so it has a hard time navigating P traps. If you look at the product pictures you will see that there is a detachable head mechanism that is about 1 to 1.5 inches in length, while secured to the cable on one side and the tip on the other side this forms a very NON-FLEXIBLE rigid portion at the very front of the line making it impossible to bend around a tight p-trap. Having it in hand I would say it is even more than 2-3" and almost 4 inches of pure rigidness. The cable was unable to feed past the tight p-trap and despite feeding the line forward it never got past the trap. Sucks! with a capital S. I wish the box or description WARNED that not suitable for tight p-traps. I wish I bought a model WITHOUT this detachable head as I have used another snake on this drain in the past which got past it (but eventually needed replacing which is why I got this one). Additionally, I can't find a cable drum replacement that does not have this detachable tip ANYWHERE online to try and salvage this tool.

          Should've bought this first...
First things first, I am a Ryobi fanboy. But I don’t want that to cloud my review because I ended up passing on this the first time around. I just couldn’t see spending $150 on a drain auger. I ended up going with the Rigid Powersping that works with a drill instead. Well week after week i kept snaking my drains with the Rigid and continued to get backed up a few days later. My friend is a plumber so he’s told me different things to try and check. He wanted me to snake the drains one more time before having him come out and having to charge me money. Well I decided to look this up because I hated the Rigid auger I have. It was autofeeding but you had to squeeze the handle really hard (not sure if mine was broke but you had to put a lot of pressure on that handle to work) and then the direction of the drill would make it go forward or backward. Well between the autofeeding on the Ryobi, the ability to replace the drum instead of the whole unit, and the replacement tips for different uses I decided to just go on ahead and get this unit. Well I snaked my kitchen drain, seemed like it was working a little harder than the Rigid did. But then when i retracted it pulled some gunk out with it. So i figured that was a good sign. Moved on to the bathroom sink and this time it pulled a huge gob of hair out. So basically what the Rigid was doing was just pushing crap further down my drain. While this Ryobi was actually catching on and pulling stuff out. The one thing i will say is I over extended the line the first time and so it wasn’t retracting. About a foot from the end of the line there is a fatter part in the cable. I pulled that back into the drum and it retracted fine. I do not know if this means the cable only goes 24ft instead of 25ft or if the cable is 26ft and the bulb is at 25ft. I didn’t measure. But the Ryobi would still extend the line past the bulb. It just wouldn’t retract until it was pulled back in passed that. All in all I’m really happy with this purchase.

This Auger was easy to use and did a much better job then I was able to do with my manual auger. It was easy to remove the auger snake and clean it and place it back into the casing for the next use. I also spray my drain snakes with some penetrating spray after cleaning to prevent rust. The tip is replaceable should yours become damaged over time. There are also several other tips / bits that can be purchased on line through Ryobi. The unit can be used with the A/C adapter that comes with it or with an 18-volt battery with does not come with the unit. I prefer using the unit with one of my 18 volt batteries that has the status lights which shows how much the battery is charged.

Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Hybrid Drain Auger (Tool Only) is something a homeowner needs and will pay for itself in short order avoiding just one Plumber's visit, at least in my part of the country. I have a large motorized snake for the main sewer line, but its too big for kitchen and bathroom work. This one is smaller, a 25-foot long, quarter inch diameter snake that's ideal for kitchen and bathroom pipes. It can handle up to a two inch diameter pipe. This model is the stand alone, tool only (no battery or charger). Its a compact size and runs on both Ryobi's 18-volt ONE battery or the included electrical electrical adapter and cord. The main control is a twist knob or Feed Collar on the front that goes from reversing the snake to forward and neutral. I should add there are two buttons over the handle that's called the Rotation Selector marked F/R and N. You must first set this before setting the Feed Collar. Its important this be set correctly to operate the auger or problems can occur with it. I recommend reading all the instructions carefully, its not that obvious at first. The auger starts up with a variable speed trigger just below the rear handle and also has a front handle, too for two hand operation. The snake's tip end is replaceable and I understand different tips are available as well as replacement snake cable. Using it is straight forward the Feed Collar mechanism is turned after pulling it back to either front, reverse or neutral and forward to lock it. Pull the trigger advances the snake forward clockwise, moving the Feed Collar to reverse rotates the snake counter clockwise and back in the drum. Reverse just spins the snake in place. I found the Feed Collar a bit tricky to engage, particularly in locking it down, but I'm sure it was just me and it will get easier as I use it. Tried it out on a kitchen sink and shower stall drain and had no problem. The operation was smooth and I used it with my own Ryobi battery, it had plenty of power to do the work. Any difficulty depends on what's found down the pipe from hair that isn't a problem to cloth rags or children's toys that can be a pain. Thinking of my other snake what I like about this one is its light weight, a pleasure to use and doesn't have the hassle of a cord when using a battery pack. Its something you'll want to keep in the garage for emergencies.
