Q:Does this charger have built-in surge protection, or will it need to be plugged in to a surge protector to be protected?
by|Jun 1, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Curious - No, there is no overload switch on this charger. We recommend disconnecting the charger from the power supply when not in use. That will help prevent damage to the charger during a power surge. However, there are protections built into the charger that will not allow it to push through an unsafe amount of power to the batteries. It can only max charge at 4A, even if there is a surge. Q:What does “HIGH PERFORMANCE” mean?
        by|Apr 5, 2024

        Answer This Question

A:  High-performance batteries are more powerful than regular 18-volt batteries. They offer more performance and longer runtime. Also, these batteries stay cooler than regular batteries, which helps with both of the items above.

If you have a lot of Ryobi products, this is a must-have
Fantastic charger! I use it with all my batteries, the plus’s HP batteries and regular lithium batteries. I have a lot of the chargers that come with tools, but they are all really small and seem like they take forever to charge the batteries. This charger on the other hand charges them extremely fast and at the same time. I love being able to charge both of the batteries for my lawnmower at the same time, so I can have two in the mower and two charging. It also mounted to the wall really easy, and feels very solid when you’re plugging the batteries in. If you have a lot of Ryobi products, this is a must have.

good charger when cycling 2 or 3 batteries
This is a good charger to have when you are cycling 2 or 3 batteries at a time and really, you only need to have maybe 2 or 3 batteries tops. Less batteries means less waste, more workshop space and better for the environment. This charger will fully charge 2 batteries while you are using the third (depending on which tool you are using of course). I do not use the single battery charger anymore but keep it on the truck for our weekend excursions in case I need to charge a battery for a portable fan, vacuum or inflator. The dual charger mounts on the wall easily and does not protrude too far like other brands. I am pretty impressed with Ryobi.

              Excellent Two-Bank Charger
I have been waiting for Ryobi to come out with an 18V One+ battery charger that will charge more than one battery at a time. I almost bought their 6-port charger but discovered that it only charged sequentially one battery at a time and then moved on to the others, one at a time, after finishing the charge of each battery. This charger charges each of the two batteries at the same time and it will handle different amp-hour rated batteries. I charged a 6 AH battery and a 2 AH battery at the same time and it did a wonderful job. Previously I had to use two separate chargers and had to deal with trying to get the AC adapters plugged into a crowded power strip. This charger doesn't use the external adapter plug; it uses a regular AC plug and all of the AC to DC conversion happens inside the base unit. This is like the original charger supplied with 18V One+ combos in the good old days. For me this is the perfect charger. It does everything that I need and I do recommend it for those who own and use several Ryobi 18V One+ tools.

Nice to charge 2 batteries at the same time with just one wire.
I already have a 6 port charger, but that is charging consecutively rather than simultaneously, so when I'm really burning through batteries with battery heavy tools (e.g. Ryobi shop vac), it is nice to be able to quickly charge them back up 2 at a time. The box claims it can charge a 2ah battery in 30 minutes. In my testing, where I completely drained a 2ah battery and a 4ah battery using my Ryobi shop vacuum, the 2ah battery was not charged after 30 minutes. Maybe if I only had one battery on the charger, it would have been fully charged, but I have not tested that theory yet. Either way, the charger is still plenty fast in my mind, but since the charge time did not match what is claimed on the box, I did dock 1 star from my rating. Overall, I'll take any opportunity to conserve power outlets, and this dual charger allows me to take what would require 2 wires and turn it into just 1, and (and it doesn't have any power bricks that take up multiple spaces on a power strip either).

              Convenient Charger
Any product that has an advantage over another one has my vote. This single charger has two ports to charge two batteries simultaneously. As I have many Ryobi batteries and several chargers, it is just easier to bring one charger and do both batteries at the same time. This model charges faster than the previous model, which is also a plus. As the Ryobi tool collection grows, so needs the charging conveniences. The tool that needs fast charging batteries is my garden cultivator. It requires more time than a larger rototiller and the batteries do not last through the whole job.

Excellent light-weight, high power battery! Not every job I do needs high capacity batteries - and working with a smaller battery like this has great power for most jobs, while making the overall tool, especially a drill, much lighter and easier to fit in tight spaces. This 2.0 Ah battery has the LED charge remaining indicator light that I like so much on bigger batteries, and weighs just 15.5 ounces. I charged it from depleted to full in 30 minutes on a Ryobi fast charger (see video time lapse where I compare it to a standard charger on a 1.5Ah battery). For run time, I ran a comparison between this new 2.0 Ah HP Ryobi battery (PBP003), a new 1.5 Ah Ryobi PBP002, and an older 2.0 Ah battery (3 years older, P190). For my test, I installed the battery in a Ryobi brushless 7.25” circular saw (P508), and simply timed how long the saw could run, with no load (no wood to cut) - just run flat out. The 1.5 Ah battery ran for 13 min and 41 sec, whereas this 2.0 Ah HP ran for 19 min, 26 sec, and my 3 year old 2.0Ah ran for 18 32. All batteries were only slightly warm when the test finished- indicating they all are designed for this kind of duty. Batteries are entirely about Amp-hours, Ah, so the 1.5 Ah is 25% less capacity than this 2.0 Ah HP model, but ran out of power 30% sooner. The Ryobi HP batteries are optimized for brushless tools, like my saw, and drill. It clearly runs longer, and is still under a pound of weight. I like this battery-it’s great for quick saw jobs, drilling, sanding or grinding. It’s perfect any time you need power, but don’t need the extra weight or expense of a higher capacity 4, 6 or larger Amp Hour battery.

I really appreciate the battery level LED meters on these newer Ryobi batteries. I still have one of the old Ryobi P102 batteries which doesn't have the LED battery level meter and I have to use an external Ryobi P150 plug in on top battery meter to measure the battery level. The older Ryobi P102 battery is about the same size as this new battery. The Ryobi P150 battery level meter is no longer available. I like that the LED battery level meter comes on quick!!! On some other brands the LED's come on one at time in sequence. The improvements in these newer Ryobi batteries are certainly appreciated.

Got this to try out as a lighter weight alternative to my regular 4Ah battery that I use on my 22 in hedge trimmer. First impression, they sound exactly the same, no difference in the speed of the hedge trimmer. I also noted that the charging time was significantly shorter with this one, no surprise there. In an actual use comparison to the 4Ah, the power seems identical. I used it for about an hour non-continuous trimming my hedge, and walking around the yard trimming low hanging branches. When finished, it was down to two bars out of four juice left. Very acceptable performance. No complaints.

I already have a Ryobi 18V ONE+ battery for my drill (the 4Ah size) but needed another one so i could continue working without having to put it back in the charger. Like the older one it charges quickly and has the indicator level light at the front and very visible as im working. Easily slots onto the charger and very easily disengages using the 2 side "press" buttons. This new 2 Ah size battery is smaller so is a bit lighter which is what i needed on these lengthier jobs. Now that i have a spare battery i can buy another Ryobi tool.
