The blade release is a little hard to open. You might want to pry it up gently with a screwdriver until you can open the latch.

I have had the same issue. Try holding the saw upside down and dropping the blade in before locking it.
This unit doesn't suffer too much from that issue although as you get longer blades you will get more flex. That being said, I found this to be an under performer for anything but the slimmest piece of wood. Personally I would never choose this for a 4x4. I purchased this saw and the Ryobi P517 to try them out and compare them, the P517 stayed in rotation and the compact went back to HD. It was well balanced and relatively quiet but it just couldn't handle average cuts in a timely manner.
Yes, I got the military discount when I purchased this item in store. As far as I know, you get the discount on everything at Home Depot except items that are on clearance.

I've used mine quite a bit this spring and never had that issue? Check your blade and locking pin. Make sure it is completely dropping down to secure the blade
If you're cleaning up a sizable amount of branches then you might want the larger, longer lasting battery. If you are looking for some quick clean up of some limbs, the smaller battery that comes with the unit should be fine.
Varies with manufacturer. Given the work that can be done with a pruning blade, i'm inclined to think that you should be able to easily find one at a price that you would not regret paying.
Not really designed that way
