A: My friends and I all use Dremel rotary tools to trim our dogs' nails. I was thinking of switching to a Ryobi until I saw this, so I will replace my current Dremel with another Dremel. If you you want to abide by Ryobi's answer, look at getting a Dremel.

A: Look for rotary tool bits that have a 1/8" (.125") dia. shank/shaft on them. This tool comes with a 1/8 in. collet. The collet is the part at the tip of the tool where you insert the different bits into. It's a twist lock compression style like a drill.

Best addition yet!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Ryobi rotary tool has been the best addition to my home hobby tool set ever! It is solid and robust while maintaining precision for the most delicate projects. Battery design, capacity and runtime is unrivaled. This easily one-ups any of the Dr3mel products which used to lead the rotary industry; not anymore.

I love this system!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Thanks, I love this system! I have quite a few 40v, ETC BE+, Tek4 and now USB Lithium tools and can’t get enough. Very versatile, and excellent quality. I used to be a Dewalt guy but always replacing tools. Not so with Ryobi. I have quite the collection and all still work daily!

Do U need the USB Lithium or the 12V cordless?
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have both the USB Lithium Rotary tool and the 12V Cordless Rotary Tool. Each tool serves a slightly different customer niche. The 12V unit is more of a heavy duty tool that a serious handyman would want. It has the power to easily sharpen mower blades, heavy duty rust removal using wire brushes and cut bolts. The USB Lithium is more of a hobbyist / jewelry maker tool and not really suited for heavy duty metal / bolt cutting. Sales literature for the 12V unit shows a chart comparing Ryobi’s Rotary tools. The chart omits that the USB Lithium can be used for metal cutting. It is ideal for intricate detail work, especially engraving. You can engrave with the 12V unit but the maneuverability and comfortable size of the USB Lithium makes it the hands down winner in this area. If you don't need the heavier cut-off ability, I recommend the USB Lithium Unit. If you need a more powerful unit, I recommend the 12V unit.
The 12V unit comes in a nice case along with 3 accessories. Both come with a small assortment of bits, and the 12V unit includes a few cut-off disks..
Battery life in both tools is quite good. The USB Lithium has the convenience of a removable battery, while the 12V battery is not removable. The 12V unit has a 3 year warranty, the USB Lithium 2 years.
I am not a fan of the Quick Change collet, and I use the supplied conventional collet nut that tightens / loosens with a wrench. For that reason I took away 1 star.

Great portability and good power
I have always wanted a good rotary tool, but it is not something I use super regularly so I don't need a top-of-the-line super-powered version. I also like the idea of a portable, non-corded tool to be easy to use in any situation. This Ryobi 4v Cordless Rotary Tool works great!
I tested it out on some scrap red oak I had and the carving tool and sanding drum worked great. The tool had plenty of power to carve into the wood and I only had minor issues getting it even through the grain. Obviously, being new to this, my carving skills are not great, but my use case will typically be to rough carve for DIY projects around the house. The sanding drum I was a little skeptical of since it came with 4 that slide over a rubber tool. I thought on the hardwood it would just snag and not spin, but it sanded the old paint right off the scrap board. I even tried to push down harder and it just kept right on sanding.
My only complaint so far is that the number of accessory heads provided is kind of low and the box they go in is not very big. I would like to see a carrying case with a place for the cord, battery, and a larger assortment of accessories.
Great new tool from Ryobi!
I really appreciate the tool less chuck on this rotary tool. Just press the gray shaft lock button on the green body and turn the big black chuck with your fingers to loosen and tighten the grip on the rotary tool accessories. The speed control slide selector and the power switch are both very sturdy. I appreciate that the speed can be turned way down to be very slow. I am glad that the charging port is USB-C, instead of one of the other mini and micro USB charging ports that you will find on other products. I tested the charging cable with my 4 ohm load and volt meter and it tested good. There is no AC adapter included, so you will need a USB-A power source such as a wall adapter, car adapter, or other USB-A power source.
This is my first rotary tool and I don’t do much artistic crafting yet. It will be fun to teach myself a new hobby. The tool is well balanced in your hand. The variable speed goes from very slow to very fast. I tried the metal bristle attachment to cut the top of my glue bottle off, but the tool over heated and stopped. It cooled off quickly, but couldn’t finish this little task. One of the attachments looks like we’ll be able to create threaded holes. This is a new Ryobi mini-lithium battery for me. There is no battery charger to plug into the wall like the other Ryobi batteries we have. The USB charging cord makes it easy to charge almost anywhere. If you have a big job for this cutter, I would recommend having two batteries so you can have a back-up. If the battery was built into the tool, you would have to stop your job to recharge your tool. That's why it’s nice that the battery is removable. Very nice idea for small hand tools.
