A:  I don’t think so , I think it would set up too fast , within 15 min it’s hard

by|Mar 8, 2023

A:  Not an expert by any means but I would use a refractory mortar for a fireplace.

      Strong and Uniform
I used this mix to cast concrete countertops. I did not use any reinforcement and even cast one piece 8 feet long with a sink hole without a single failure.

        Gravel in mortar?
I bought this to parge the side of a concrete wall because it is advertised as a good application for this product. As soon as I opened the bag I could see gravel/pea stones up to 3/4" all through the mix. I went through half the bag to see how bad it was and the gravel was all through the mix. I tried to sift the gravel out but there were way too many and the sand grit was course and larger. Repair mortar should have fine plaster sand to be used for tuck pointing or plastering, not this stuff. TERRIBLE product. Lost a day of work dealing with this trash. Checked another bag at the store during the return. Same garbage. HD doesn't sell stucco or parge mix in our area. Unless you custom mix your own, use Quikrete Type S mortar mix over bonding slurry. Much finer sand and no gravel. Quikrete Repair Mortar with polymer was actually better, but it only comes in caulk tubes now, what a shame. Sadly, this is what "Made In America" has become. No pride in your work. HD did accept the return with no problem.

When I'm leveling up an Industrial machine up on shims and have it bolted onto the Floor, this is what I use to fill in gaps under and around. In the one picture, you can see a little blue. That's from being run into by a CHEP Blue Pallet. It didn't break YET. I had just fixed it as they broke it up about half of that. People like to run into things. This is the second time I've had to fix that one. To get a smooth look, you wet your Metal 3-4" wide knife. Puddy knife or drywall knife. Dip in water and run across. If you want more of a ruff look with the small bits of rock, you and wipe and dap with a sponge. Mine is the smooth look in the picture. The less water you use, the stronger it's going to be. It has to be wet and mixed wet good, but it can't be thin and runny. Just enough so it's all wet, and there is no dry mix left. A little water goes a long way. It is Rapid Set and so you have to use it pretty quickly before it starts drying. Then it's to hard to work with. So you can only do small sections at a time. In my case, mix enough for 1 or 2 Legs. You have maybe 15 minutes to work!!!

I used rapid Set Mortar Mix to make 3" thick step treads. Each tread was 4.5 bags of Rapid Set Mortar Mix. I used the Rapid Set Flow control and Set Control for a perfect consistency and to give more time before it set up. The result was very few voids.

This is a excellent material to use for our stomwater system work. It will stick to concrete and brick and stay in place. Although the cost for the material is higher, your wait time to setup and cost for labor time decreases then the regular, cheaper mortar mix.

This mortar is what I chose to use to make these concrete countertops. I had to work quickly and in an organized manner. Inverted casting was the best method.
