Quality Razorback edging shovel. D style handle along with sturdy thick wooden shaft does not flex while edging. All rivets that hold shovel together are heavy duty and made for professional use. Ears on top of blade and width make a tough job easier and, with proper care, should make the shovel last. Razor-Back tools are American made and offer value and toughness.

This spade, by Ames, is ruggedly built with a heavy gauge blade and ferrule. The ferrule (see picture), is nearly 10 inches long providing a great attachment to the white oak handle. D-handle is strong and easy to grip and the top of the blade has wide foot folds for digging power.
We got this particular shovel because in addition to planting (tough digging in South Carolina clay), my wife likes to maintain a sharp border between the beds and the lawn. The well shaped and sharp blade is ideal for this purpose.
All aspects of it's construction are right and rugged, the cheap imports are no comparison. I can well recommend Ames tools and this spade in particular.

This spade has a straight cutting edge which makes it ideal for making and maintaining borders. I use it for the edge of a concrete path at the front of my home which has Vinca growing on one side. Left alone the vegetation would grow right across the path in a few weeks. One plunge of the spade at the edge of the path severs the Vinca ready for sweeping up.
The spade blade has X-shape folds to resist bending under load, while still keeping the cutting edge straight. This is a better solution than simply putting in some curvature at the top of the blade as is done on my old border spade.

I'm really loving this border spade. The wife and I are redoing our backyard and we want to create a wall just beneath the stone pavers. This spade is the perfect tool because just pushing it down into the dirt gives us the perfect border. We can even use it to press dirt into the cavity under the pavers before we stack the wall stone. I definitely recommend this product. Its strong and sturdy. The handle makes for a good grip as well. The spade makes the job 10 times easier.

Nice short shovel with flat blade for landscaping edging. This is a very comfortable to use border spade perfect for edging flowerbeds or gardens. The D-style handle is comfortable and strong feeling. The handle is sturdy wood, and the extends all the way down through the long neck of the steel blade. There are adequate "ears" at the top of the blade to step on when digging. The blade is strong and does not flex when I put full weight on it. I'm very pleased with this shovel. The only 'negative' - now I have to go get to work and us it! :-)
