Questions & Answers

can I use this to cover the inside of windows in an RV to keep the sun out for summer storage, or what other product do I use for keeping sun out

Asked by: JB01
In the summer, I attach a layer of Reflectix to the OUTSIDE surface of the RV window for stationary use. Substantial heat shielding this way, stopping heat before it gets INSIDE. I used some plastic snap buttons so it is readily detachable. So that's another thing to solve depending on your windows, etc. Putting the Reflectix on the inside surface can raise the temperature of the tinted windows that it could thermally stress the window or its frame, so you need to ascertain the risk. Also, the sun energy is already inside so reflecting it through a tinted window really just heats up the window which in turn creates infrared heat & it's like a greenhouse effect.

It says R3.7 to R21, depending on application.

What would its R value be if I used a single layer of it to block out sunlight on the inside of a picture window?
Asked by: David
There are three ways that heat is exchanged: Radiation, Conduction and Convection. R values represent a product's ability to slow the flow of heat by conduction. It really isn't a measure of its ability to handle radiant energy. A radiant barrier is basically intended to continuously reflect back heat rather than slow the rate of conduction. The Department of Energy has a nice description of a radiant barrier: http://energy.gov/energysaver/radiant-barriers

can this product keep pipes from freezing?

would this work if I put this around my trailer to keep pipes from freezing during winter
Asked by: Michael
Your question was if you could wrap your TRAILER to keep the pipes from freezing. I am guessing that you are wanting to do the same thing I did and that was to insulate the space between the trailer underside and the ground as to create a crawl space climate warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing. I did this successfully with sheet metal roof. I would not recommend reflectix for this purpose for the fact that it is not solid enough to resist the wind and other things like animals and limbs. In climate zone 8-10 the ground under the trailer should give off enough heat to prevent the pipes from freezing from temps of 25°F if the wind is prevented from blowing under the trailer.

Can this be used to go behind paneling on basement outer walls for insulation?

Asked by: cabcab09
Dear CabCab and Home Depot customers: I am puzzled by the recent reply from someone in the Reflectix Technical Group. They said, "Respectfully, the responder from Mass. is in error. Most Reflectix assembly R-values are valid year around (we state specific thermal performance “per application”). Our products are tested in the same manner as fiberglass and foam. " It would be helpful if the Reflectix Technical Group could provide more details on the "errors". First, Reflectix is NOT tested in the same manner as standard insulation, e.g. fiberglass, rock wool, foam board and cellulose. You can see this on the Home Depot website. Standard insulation is tested as a material with an R value per inch of thickness -- for example, R-13 for 3.5" of Owens Corning fiberglass, and R-5 per inch with Foamular foam board. In contrast, Reflectix is always tested as part of an assembly, e.g. a simulated wall with 2x4 studs, dry wall, an air space and layer of Reflectix. Why? Because the shiny bubble wrap that Reflectix is made from has very little R value by itself -- only R-1. The sealed air gap that you must build / create provides almost all of the claimed R values, not Reflectix. Second, the performance of Reflectix and other radiant barriers varies with the temperature -- better in summer and poor in winter. In a cathedral ceiling, for example, Reflectix claims R7 in summer but only R1 in winter in the northern USA. Why? In summer, a hot roof emits lots of radiant (infrared) energy that can be reflected. In winter, cold cannot be 'reflected' and warmer air inside your home does not emit much infrared energy. Reflectix should provide ASTM test reports that show R-value performance in summer AND winter temperatures for walls, crawlspaces, ducts and other applications and post these reports on their website. I look forward to more detailed information from the Reflectix Technical Group. Mark

I purchased this rolled Insulation as an idea and an attempt to lower the unbearable garage temperatures this past summer. Our garage door faces West and would absorb the extreme afternoon temps daily with indoor garage temperatures reaching 104 degrees. The outdoor surface temperature of the garage door would read 130 degrees during the scorching summer months. Due to these extreme temperatures, I was also concerned with the best method to adhere the insulation to the interior panels of the door that would hold up and not peel off. I researched and decided on using Roberts Max Grip Double-sided Permanent Carpet Tape found in the flooring section at Home Depot. It took my wife and I approximately 2 hrs to install on our 2 car garage. The difference inside the garage has been staggering and now have a comfortable temperature range we can live with. The infrared reader was measuring 130 on the exterior door and approx. 84 on the interior this past summer so the average temperature change has been -22-25 degrees. It holding up great after the first summer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use product for Garage Door Insulation I used this to cover the inside of my 2 car and 1 car garage doors on my 3 car garage. These doors are aluminum and face the west. They really heated up in the summer making the garage extra hot. I followed the garage door installation video on the manufacturer's website and the installation turned out great. The 100 foot roll weighs 10 pounds, so the weight on the garage doors was about 6 (on the double) and 4 pounds (on the single door). I tested opening both door by hand and didn't notice any difference in the extra weight on them - so I didn't need to adjust the springs. Overall, it was a very easy installation. I used 1" wide double-sided carpet tape to attach it after cleaning the rails and styles with denatured alcohol to make it stuck really well. The garage temperature is much better, the room doesn't echo as much, and it brighter due to the reflection off the doors. It also cut down on some of the rattling sounds when the doors open and close. If you live in a hot area, I would recommend this on any south or west facing metal doors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will Make a BIG Difference!! I cannot give enough praise to this product. It has lowered our attic temp by at least 30 degrees or more. Air conditioner does not work as hard to keep up. Even our HVAC tech said that it went from one of the hottest to one of the coolest attics. I have two gable vent fans that are set to kick on at 100 degrees.....they have yet to come on this summer (we have had a few days in the upper 90's). I am reluctant to write such a good review.....afraid someone will jack the price up on it. Two notes of interest. A 4 X 100 ft roll is available online....that is the way to go. Much cheaper. Don't buy the Reflectix brand foil tape to tape the seams. The HVAC section at HD has much larger rolls for a little more. Also...it will be much easier to install with 2 workers. It will look like a space capsule when you are done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Have to wait and see.... I see a great many applications for this product in many areas of the home and will be using it in the future. Overall this product is wonderful, excellent consistency and quality in its fabrication. Currently being used primarily in the crawlspace of the home. Wrapping over the old insulation of the ducts to tighten, seal and clean everything up. (see attached) I will also be using this product as part of an insulation and vapor barrier system I'm building for the walls. The reflective qualities of the product should also prove to be very beneficial in helping to light up the space when you do inspections or need to do any repair work under the house. My only concerns will be the long-term stability/performance of the product. Only time will tell if drying, cracking or flexibility becomes an issue but I don’t anticipate any problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We installed this in the attic. It really works. I saw this in an attic before and wanted to install it in ours. We installed the Reflectix insulation and the attic became cooler as we progressed. It cost us an eighth ofwwhat Costco wants. All the tools we needed are a T-50 staple gun, a utility knife and a pair of large scissors. I strongly suggest buying several boxes of staples. It took us four hours with doing planning the day before. Leave a gap on either side of the roof peak vent. We used a 2 foot by 6 foot piece of 3/4 inch OSB to stand on ( one for each of us) to save us from having to stand on the ceiling joists. Our AC Guy saw it when we finished and said it will take a load off of the attic-mounted air handler. We also put in a deck in the attic to store our Christmas decorations (we have a lot) and a few other items. I went up there today when it was over 80 outside. It was the same in the attic as outside: just over 80. Saving on AC this summer and getting rid of storage will make this break even before Christmas. Oh yes....this is not a beginners project as no instructions are given. Look at the Reflectix online brochure. Study it. This is a special order item. Get it delivered to your home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Insulation Oven I wish everyone could know the hidden value of this product. I learned about the solar ovens being used by the women of Somalia refugee camps, made with cardboard and reflective tin foil glued to the surface and shaped to reflect the sun onto a dark pot. This has not only freed up hours a day hunting for fire wood but has also kept them from great harm. With a 3'X4' piece of Reflectix I have duplicated their pattern and have cooked several meals with no fuel and little effort. It folds up and can be carried camping or kept for emergencies. At a little over $5.00 each, every one should have one of these in an emergency preparedness kit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy garage door insulation alternative I used this material to insulate my south-facing garage door in lieu of the foam insulation kits that are available. The material is similar in nature to the auto sunshades you can purchase at big brand stores (reflective with the bubble-wrap material in the middle). The material is relatively lightweight (~less than 10lbs for a doubler car garage door), and is easy to work with. As one previous review mentioned, using a pair of sharp scissors may be easier than using a knife. I tried both methods to cut (knife and scissors), and found the scissors to be much easier. I was able to install the insulation by simply cutting ~1in larger than the garage door channels, and sliding the material in-between. I used double-sided carpet tape in minimal spots - only in areas where the insulation seemed to fall after cycling the garage door up and down a few times. Unfortunately, I do not not have a baseline temperature to do do before-and-after comparison, however, my perceived feel of the garage temperature after the installation is that the temperature is ~5-10 degrees cooler. However, there is a distinct different when I touch the garage door in the areas with insulation versus the areas without.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works really well on garage door! I installed the Reflectix radiant barrier foil on the inside panels of a double and a single garage door. I installed these by using not only double-sided tape but also by securing the foil sheets with the existing door panel hinges. The installation worked out really well. Now, when the outside of the garage doors measures a hot 102 deg F on a sunny day, the inside of the same doors stays at about 70 deg F. Wow! What a difference it makes. Now it is almost the end of October in Austin, TX, and outside it is quite a bit cooler than what we see in summer. I am waiting to measure the temperature differential on a hot summer day. Home Depot did an excellent job in shipping the foil quickly and also charging for it very reasonably.
