Does unit require recirculation pump to work effectively (no fluctuation of hot water temperature) assuming proper load on the water heater? Is recirculation pump required for the heat exchanger warranty?
Asked by: Keen
No it does not require a recirculation pump. The only thing that might zoid the Warranty is hard water; so a water softener might be needed & I recommend one for longevity of the unit.

The exhaust temps are low enough to use PVC pipe -the link above to Rheem's site says NOTHING to the contrary.

Since these units require electricity, does it need to be reignited every time there are outages. I live in an area where there are small outages at least once a month, the clocks will be blinking and it is because while I was at work the power hiccupped . I just wonder if this will be a proble

No pilot light, it has an electric ignite. Plus I have mine on a computer battery backup UPS which powers it fine during power outages and protects against surges

Rheem Performance Platinum 9.5 GPM Natural Gas High Efficiency Indoor Tankless Water Heater is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 332.

I woke up one morning to discover my water heater crapped the bed and left a heck of a mess. I spent two days researching tank vs. tankless while my kids began to stink. As far as I could tell, the four drawbacks to a tankless were 1) upfront cost 2) length of time to deliver hot water to the tap 3) ongoing maintenance 4) longevity. I have three kids so an endless supply of hot water sounded divine but I was determined to solve for the downsides of the tankless. Longevity: I decided to go with the Rheem brand for the 12 year heat exchanger warranty. That seams to be the most venerable component in these bad boys. My old water heater was 14 yers old before it bit the dust, so I figured 12 years would be a reasonable minimum lifespan on the tankless. - problem solved! Upfront cost: It was $1098 for the unit and an additional $500 in pipe, plywood, fittings, gas line etc. I mitigated the cost by doing the installation myself and using Home Depot 15% off coupon. That saved me $200 so I was into the whole package for $1400 after tax - about double the cost of a quality 50 gallon tank version (the tank version has fewer parts needed for install). In my mind it was $700 extra for unlimited hot water, a dry basement, more space in my mechanical room, a gift to Mother Earth (just in case manmade climate change is real), and something I can show-off to the neighbors - problem solved! Length of time for hot water: 50 seconds for a shower to reach temperature is a non-issue. Don't we all start the shower and then run around and get our soap/towel/boxers lined-up and ready anyway? 50 seconds for hot water at the sink? That's crazy! Our house can't be retrofitted for recirculation and using one of those end-of-line recirculation jobs felt like a nightmare hack. Then I discovered these "Point-Of-Use" beauts that cuts the sink time from 50 seconds to 10 seconds - problem solved! Maintenance: There is no way around it so I trained my 11 year old son how to do it. Until he goes to college (7 years) I don't have to worry about it. - problem solved! Other random thoughts: It would be cool (Rheem, are you listening?) if they manufactured these things to self-flush once a month. Similar to water softeners. You will have to re-learn all the settings on your taps. I use to take a shower with the handle pointed to 2-o'clock, but now it's more like 11:30. Minor detail, I know. After hooking everything up the unit just started and worked like magic. It was impressive. I read some reviews that said 120 degrees was not hot enough water. Who are you people? The wifi kit looks cool. Not $180 cool, but cool. In the back of my head I was hopping Rheem might send me one for writing them a glowing review (Rheem, are you still listening?). If you decide to use the Sharkbite fittings, make sure to use clean cuts with a pipe cutter. I had a couple of those suckers let loose and I think it was because of the cuts. If I am being honest, they were my least favorite part of the install and the only thing that makes me nervous about it. If they continue to haunt my dreams I may swap them out for time-tested solder fittings. The CSST gas pipe is nice, but if it's your first time using it buy an extra fitting to practice with first. Clean. Cuts. Are. A. Must. I also bought a gas leek detector at the HD to make sure those fittings were good. $24 bucks! If you live in Minnetonka, MN you are welcome to barrow it. Spend the extra $75 for a cold water check valve (intake side), hammer stopper, and pressure meter. I don't know for sure that you will need them, but you will eliminate three potential issues I read about in various forums. If you live in the northern climate, make sure you install your vent and intake at least 24" off the ground to account for snow. Ask me how I learned that lesson? Get a sheet of plywood installed behind the heater to easily fasten all the pipe and fittings. I added a Kiddie CO2 + Explosive gas detector next to the unit for peace of mind. Hard water seams to be the leading cause of death for most hot water heaters - tank or tankless. Although we have a softener the sludge that came out of the bottom of out old tank was gag-worthy. So I am also considering one of those electronic descailers. More homework! It took me about 8 hours to do the whole install plus 2 hours of online research. My kids smell good again. Good luck!

It worked for two weeks when it started overheating and shutting off. I have spoken to at least 5 or 6 Techs all the way up to a Senior Tech a number of times. They sent me a couple of parts which did not fix the overheating and shutting off problem. I have tried 3-4 times to contact them for warranty repair as the unit is not even 6 months old yet. They have transferred me to numerous people only to be left on hold or disconnected. I have sent 3 separate emails to Customer Service and Tech Support trying to get an RMA number so I can send this unit back so they can repair it. To this day all my emails have been ignored. I know they are valid email addresses because I used them early on when the problem started. I have since replaced the unit with a conventional tank water heater because I needed hot water. DO NOT BUY any of Rheems tankless products, their Customer Service and Warranty Support are worthless. #Rheemtankless #RheemWaterHeaters #RheemManufacturing

I am not a plumber or licensed contractor but I am handy with all the trades so I retrofitted a 1" natural gas line and installed this myself. Home Depot ran a special discounting this model by $200 off so I could not resist getting the recirculating model. However one should know the recirculating features increases (almost doubles) the size compared to other Rheem models. While I salute to Rheem for having a tech support line with short wait times, the recirc feature always required me to speak with level two - senior technicians for help on installation. I am rating this a 3-star largely based on Rheem's lousy Users Manual necessitating a number of calls for help and also because I am learning that the recirc feature dramatically increases the probability of problems down the road. Lastly, the speed of delivery of the unit and vent kit to my local home depot was unacceptably slow. Order date was 1/29/19 and the vent kit arrived 2/11/19. That's a long time without a water heater!

Customer service is terrible! The units was working for about a month before it started giving me problems. Immediately I called customer service and after 20 minutes of getting transferred and waiting for a technician I was told to call before 3pm central time. Rheem's website states their customer/technical service for tankless is from 7am to 7pm central time 7 days a week (https://www.rheem.com/contact/). I had originally called at 5pm central time. I called the next day (Saturday) this time it was before 3pm central time. I was put on hold for 15 min. After reaching the technician his response was to call back on a weekday before 6pm. I tried getting more information from him explaining that I had previously called and I didn't want to be out of hot water for more days. I could tell him as getting annoyed by his one word responses so I eventually just hung up. I will wait to see what excuse the technician will have for me on Monday.

I thought I was investing in something that would be better for energy, be water saving, plus have continuous hot water. The opposite has been true. Since installation it has malfunctioned. It takes WAY longer for the water to get hot even in the bathroom right next to it. Sometimes the kitchen sink or upstairs shower will not get hot at all. At these times the control panel beeps and blinks. I have been given many contradictory methods to solve this from Rheem and plumbers and PG&E. I have now also been told by many plumbers and PGE that there are constant problems with theses heaters and they end up wasting water. It sounds like some are good for smaller spaces (without upstairs or if you have several that are near the water supply). Today I am removing this heater and going back to a regular tank heater. Rheem will not return my money. They want me to keep trouble shooting the problem. Not happy at all and would never buy anything else from them. Returning to HOME DEPOT. I hope they honor my receipt which states I have a year to return.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recently purchased and installed the Rheem Performance Platinum 9.5 GPM Natural Gas High Efficien... Recently purchased and installed the Rheem Performance Platinum 9.5 GPM Natural Gas High Efficiency Indoor Tankless Water Heater Model # ECOH200DVLN-2. Before you buy there is some math you will need to do a) is your supply gas line big enough and b) how is the intake and exhaust going to be routed c) are your water lines and pressure high enough to supply this hot water heater without a booster pump. I recommend downloading and reading the installation instructions prior to getting started. Both the intake and exhaust for this water heater will need to be route to the outside of your home and will need to have the same number of elbows and be roughly the same length. The maximum number of feet the run can be varies with the size of the pipe 2 or 3 inch and number of elbows. Details are in the manual starting on page 34 along with the programing instructions for the hot water heater. Gas Supply instructions start on page 54. This section includes some charts and formulas to determine if you have a large enough gas supply. If you plan on using black pipe to make your final connections, I recommend making the gas line run prior to mounting the unit on the wall. Once the gas line if fitted use a square to make the top of the union on the wall which will allow you to determine the best height to mount it at so there is little to no gap between the other half of the union. The installation instructions for this begin on page 27 of the manual which I strongly recommend reading prior to purchase and installation. The other section I recommend reading over is the maintenance section and ask yourself if you are willing to keep up on it. This is not an install and forget water heater. To lessen the amount of maintenance needed I installed a 50-micron spin down whole house filter with a de-scaling agent and pressure gauge on the inlet line of the water heater. Other things to consider: Hot water recirculation; if you already have one you will need to see if the water flow is above 2.5 gallons per minute or you will need to replace it. I currently have mine disabled and plan on installing the one designed to work with the system by Rheem. Future maintenance; I purchased and install my unit with the recommended tankless maintenance valves. You can install it without them, but you will still need to add valves with will allow you to flush the system on a scheduled basis. For the cost and effort needed I went with the SharkBite valve kit. My system seems to be working great and have tested it running to showers at the same time with no issues. Will be testing 3 at the same time in the near future. If you were lucky enough to purchase everything you need and have all the tools this can be installed in a single day time will mostly be determined by your skill level and how the intake exhaust will be ran. In true DIY fashion it took me two days to install 65% of the time spent running back and forth between hardware stores for tools and supplies. Best of luck to ya and enjoy! P.S. pardon the mess hadn’t repaired the damaged drywall yet in the pictures.

The results of the unit exceeds all expectations. However, this installation is not for all "do-it self" fans ... I have electrical and plumbing skills and background which is needed in abundance for this task. Great care is needed in order to avoid code violations. Having said all this, I saved about $4,000.00 dollars in "professional" fees, and ended up with a product which greatly out performs my old "traditional" hot water heater. There is also a California gas company rebate which I have filed for. The efficiency of the Rheem Tankless unit should result in a considerably less total for my natural gas utility bill. I chose the outdoor unit for several technical reasons mostly related to my installation circumstance.

Their products have always stood up against whatever I throw at them, while also being easy on the wallet (a plus for the mrs.!#) Alas, it is with a heavy hand that I find that this product does not fit the criteria of what I was expecting out of a new natural gas system. First, how in the darn diddly heck do I install this thing? There was no paperwork in the box- millennials! I know being eco friendly is the new wave, but what were they thinking??!!! After a long day at working at the lumber yard, I wanna come home to a heated house, a heated roast, and a wife that will leave me alone- after all, the lumber yards are demanding! Why can't I just plug it in? Why can't I just use the hookup from my previous system? Technology just doesn't make any sense!!! I had to call Bob (he's a guy who sure knows how to install things well, but I don't like that he charges money- what happened to good old fashioned COMMON COURTESY?) But once it was installed, I was floored by all the natural heat that I felt. Anyways, I would not recommend this product. Reem, if you'r ereding this in eed ytouy to soopp oh my god the stroikkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
