I know it says 240v 30 amps, but do this unit needs a neutral, besides the the 2 hora and the ground?!
    ByApr 3, 2026
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Hi, No, this unit does NOT need a neutral. It uses 240 volts, 30 amps, 2 hots + ground only. The XE50T10H45U0 is a straight 240‑volt resistive + heat pump load. It does not power any 120‑volt internal components, so a neutral is unnecessary. This is the same wiring style as a standard 4500‑W electric water heater. Derius

          What is the recovery efficiency
          ByJun 25, 2025

          Answer This Question

Hi, The Performance Platinum 50 Gal. Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heater (Model XE50T10H45U0) has a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of 3.75, which is exceptionally high and reflects its outstanding efficiency. While UEF is the standard metric for modern water heaters, recovery efficiency, which measures how effectively the unit transfers energy to the water, typically applies to gas models. That said, this hybrid unit uses a heat pump plus electric elements, so its recovery rate depends on the mode it’s operating in: In Heat Pump mode, it’s ultra-efficient but slower to recover. In Hybrid or High Demand mode, it uses both the heat pump and electric elements for faster recovery. If you’re looking for fast hot water replenishment, switching to High Demand mode via the EcoNet® app or control panel will give you the best recovery performance. Derius

this was my question after digging the old heater appears to use $550 dollars of power and the new uses $150 75% savings but this will vary per house.

Can this be set to stay in electric mode in the winter? This will be in my garage that I heat and don't want it making my heater run more in the winter.

                Sensor problems galore
The hot water heater has been a major disappointment. I have only been able to use the hybrid function for a short time since the sensors keep failing and need to be replaced for the heat pump to function. Each time a sensor fails I have to run the tank as a standard hot water tank with zero efficiency. That totally negates the whole propose of paying extra for the energy cost savings. Now the unit has begun randomly throwing my breaker, causing me to wake up to a freezing cold shower.

                Hi,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re truly sorry to hear how disappointing this unit has been for you. Repeated sensor failures, having to run the heater in standard mode, and now dealing with breaker trips is incredibly frustrating, especially after investing in a high‑efficiency model for the energy savings. You should be able to rely on the hybrid function without constant interruptions. We appreciate you taking the time to detail what’s been happening, and your feedback helps highlight issues that need attention.

                  Worst Purchase of My Life
This was the worst purchase I've ever made in my life for my family. Please be warned that you will not get more than 15-20min of hot water at any one time, starting with full hot water. We had this professionally installed and over the last 9 months, we have cranked up the temperature, we have kept it on High-Demand mode, we have been on the phone with Rheem for hours, we have had parts replaced just in case... nothing has ever helped. We live off of family members watching the app to see if there is hot water for someone to take a bath or shower. At first, lower-level reps from Rheem and plumbers said it was an issue and we should be getting more than that, but once the issue was escalated to the manager and escalation team lead (named Delereco), I found no help at all. They said it was working the way it should and that the 'small print' says that about 15 minutes of hot water is correct, and there's nothing wrong with it. So they were not willing to do anything else. I am finally paying to have this hybrid tank uninstalled and returned to Home Depot, and paying for another installation of a tankless water heater. Biggest waste of money of my life. Just beware, if your wife likes hot water (or anyone for that matter), she will hate you for buying this.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We're truly sorry to hear about the ongoing issues with your water heater and the frustration it has caused for you and your family. We appreciate your detailed feedback and will pass it along to the quality team to help improve products and customer support.

I've installed this beast in my utility closet where things were so tight, I had to disconnect the gas line on my furnace to have a half inch of room to get this into the closet. I also had to take a stud and part of the plate out of the wall (no drywall inside the closet) and put in two, better placed studs in order to use a 28" pan as specified in the instructions. Atypical, my connections came in from the top, so I had to reroute those. (As an engineer, the new locations make much more sense to me.) The instructions called for a 6" min. heat trap on the inlet, but no indication on the output. I put 7" traps on both and don't really feel any warmth on the cold nipple or trap. After much research, I ran CPVC directly to the water heater and used 1" foam insulation tubes for the first foot or so to be able to fit insulation over the CPVC adaptors. I also had to add an expansion tank and syphon break. I started it up in high demand mode to get us back with hot water after having been without for two days. Then I set it to heat pump only mode and it has done fine for a week for two adults. The water at 120* is noticeably hotter that what my 23-year-old standard electric was producing, even though its thermostats were set at 120*. So hot, I'm going to double check the temp with a digital thermometer. I should have had it delivered, it was a beast to man handle with a little help from the wife. The only thing I don't like about it is the flimsy plate for connecting the 220. It is too thin and bends when dealing with three 10-gauge wires and the different size concentric rings deform if you aren't using the largest hole. It does produce both noise and cold air. I will be ducting it through vents in the closet walls but for now the closet doors are off the it blows cold air in your face when you walk by. The noise is on the level of a small window AC unit. There does not appear to be any noise transmitted through the CPVC to other parts of the house. I hope to report back once I have it fully ducted and have seen post installation electric bills. My workbench where I spend a lot of time is 3' from the closet. I never noticed the furnace running, I'm sure I'll be fully aware when this bad boy kicks on.

                    John,

Thank you for sharing your detailed experience. It sounds like you went through quite an effort to get your Performance Platinum water heater installed! Your engineering insights and modifications are impressive. We are glad to hear it’s performing well in heat pump mode and providing hot water efficiently.

We understand your concerns about the flimsy connection plate and the noise. Ducting the cold air sounds like a good plan to manage the temperature and noise levels. Your feedback is valuable and will help others considering this model. If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to call 866-279-4566 between the hours of 7 A.M. and 7 P.M. CST!

                    Efficient Water Heater
This water heater has done nothing but exceed my expectations. I had to extend my CPVC due to the cold supply line being on the bottom of the water heater. On energy saver in mainly runs the heat pump. Account for the condensate line. I used my old connection and have the condensate line water draining outside through the block wall. In a month with heavy usage, I’ve only spend $9 on electricity. The smart connectivity is a plus.

                      Very efficient
Working perfectly. Installed far away from any bedrooms. It does make a low hum, when heating water, which might bother sleepers if too close.Sucks the heat out of small room. Installed louvered door. We plan on storing garden food stuffs in the same room. Really like the app that lets you track usage. Only wish it had a timer function. I like the remote access the app gives! Set up took a few hours of plumbing and electrical but was pretty basic for DIYers.

                        So loud !
I just had this installed in a garage and it’s so loud when the heat pump is running I can hear it in the main house. It’s sitting at 55dB. If I move it closer to the exhaust it’s over 60dB. Turning it to electric heater instead of heat pump make the noise go away.

                          Amazingly efficient hot water heater!
I have the 40 gallon version with 2 adults and I am averaging about 1.84 kwh per day over the last 10 days. My 27 year old electric water heater made by "American Water Heater Company" that was replaced by the Rheem was averaging about 13.5 kwh per day. I estimate I will save $44 per month based on my current electric rates. The exhaust fan is very quiet which runs an hour or two at most after finishing up 2 showers. A gas or tankless water heater makes more sense for very cold climates.

                            Buy another brand, no warranty
Mine started leaking in 8th year. They did not honor 12 year warranty because licensed plumber disconnected and put new one in. Warranty means nothing. You have to wait for them for weeks and the you can change the water heater. They know that this is impossible and you have to change right away so they put an exclusion on the warranty document that you cannot move water heater. Dishonest company and people. I am stupid that I bought same water heater thinking they will honor the warranty. I hope this helps someone out there.

We are really sorry to hear about your experience with the water heater and the warranty issues. It sounds incredibly frustrating to deal with such a situation, especially when you expect a product to last and the warranty to be honored.

It’s unfortunate that the warranty had such a specific exclusion that wasn’t clear upfront. Sharing your experience can definitely help with this issue. If you need any assistance, feel free to call 866-279-4566 between the hours of 7 A.M. and 7 P.M. CST.
