Hi PGEsparky and thank you for your question. Always check with local building and HVAC codes before designing the duct system The water heater may be ducted to the outdoors or another space as described in these instructions. Ducting configurations that does not comply with these guidelines are not supported. DO NOT connect this water heater to existing duct work; it must be ducted separately from other appliances. Ducting approved for HVAC applications is required. Ducting must be adequately supported along both vertical and horizontal lengths. UL Certified terminations must be used for ducting to the outside. These terminations have been evaluated to ensure there is sufficient protection from rain water entry and resistance to air flow is minimized. Indoor registers approved for HVAC applications is required. Rigid ducting must be isolated from floor joists or other structural members to minimize the transmission of noise and vibration. A short section (12 inch minimum) of flexible duct must be used between the water heater and rigid ducting as an isolation method. Every foot of flexible ducting counts as three feet of rigid ducting. Ducting must be insulated per HVAC codes (to prevent condensation). Ensure cold air exhaust is sufficiently away from structures to prevent condensation on surfaces. Maximum heater performance is obtained by lowering the resistance to air flow (regular filter maintenance is beneficial) and providing the unit with warm moist air. Considerations when planning the duct system:  Run the ducting the most direct route possible.  Limit the number of elbows/bends.  Use the largest duct size possible.  Use the largest termination possible.  Consider placement and direction of terminations (reduce recirculation of exhaust into the intake). Calculated length of duct is the length on the inlet plus the length on the outlet. Any combination of duct lengths on the inlet and outlet is supported up to the maximum duct length. You can contact your store, a plumber/hvac technician.

If you're installing this in a confined space, you'll have to run some ducting for the heat pump side of things so it can pull in warm air and exhaust the cold air. Other than that, I don't see an issue with it. Worst case, you can run this as a normal electric water heater without the heat pump, but that defeats the purpose of buying this.

This is a hybrid, so in the worst case scenario it will work at least as well as a good electric heater. Having said that, it will work just fine in the winter. Refrigerant boils at a well below freezing which is where the magic happens with heat pumps anyway. This is the same property that allows homes in areas with below freezing temperatures to be heated using a heat pump. You may notice a little more energy consumption in the winter vs summer (although I doubt it given the comparative mildness of the winters in your area) but it will most certainly function just fine.

80Gallon Pro Terra Elec HW Htr
My all elec AO Smith was 15+ years old and I wanted a more efficient solution (plus there was rust showing telling me it was time). Found this Rheem 80G Pro Terra Hybrid Unit on sale at HD. After checking the heights in my mech room I ordered this unit and hired a local plumber to install with Pro Press copper. Unit fired up and the first warm up was all elec coils and heat pump. Holds 120degF easily. The app is weak and glitchy for the first 48 hours. One false alarm on day #2 for a water leak and the safety valve closed like a clam. Cleared the alarm and runs well ever since. We use about 220 gallons total water each day and estimate 120+ HW of that total. Fluctuating in Energy Saver mode and I can see the spike when elec coils called to work. Rheem should have their own app as there is no explanation of the sequence of operations when either elec coil is asked to work. I realized my house using two + long showers while kitchen cooking is the peak. The instructions call for a pan which prevents service to the leak rope sensor when following their installation instructions. I chose the hard pipe connections as the braided soft connection tend to be the weak point. This unit does make noise and is like a larger fridge in my living room directly above the heater. I knew this in advance so this should not be a mystery to you when buying this unit. Very tolerable if you expect it. Pulls the room down 5 deg F and less humid during this summer. A better app or control board would show the three sensors and indicate when the coils are running. Or better yet show tank temperature at the low med high point. This current model is excellent and I recommend it highly for those who need to change their current elec unit. Do hire a plumber unless you own a pro press kit. I could have done this myself however the value speed and peace of mind makes a good plumber worth it. It is a two person install. A friend has the AO Smith version and it is too noisy. I don’t think of this as a payback period although I will see a refund of $400 from my utility company and a $300 fed tax credit this year. I see this as cost avoidance at 200am on a weekend if I waited any longer.

I would definitely recommend this product. The very 1st day I got it the results was absolutely impressive. I had hot water in one hour. can you believe that? Plus a key important feature was the fact that since I live in Florida and you know it's hot in Florida My garage was surprisingly cooler Then what it normally is. So my advice to you if you are in the market for a new water heater this is the one you need to get if you live in a warm environment In order to take advantage of all the benefits that it has benefits daddy has. If you live up North then this may not be the one for you Remember is sucks in the heat from outside releasing cool air out to wherever you have this water heater installed. But if you live up North they have a remedy for that and that is duckwork In order to blow the cooler out of your house.

I am a homeowner who generally does all my own maintenance and installation of appliances, HVAC, building skills. These are my impressions after having it for 3 months. Pros: The heater was a very easy install. I connected it up to PEX plumbing and had it running within 2 hours. The app is a nice feature although I hardly mess with it, you can easily adjust the heater remotely or physically on the unit with a nice display. Cons: It does put off white noise I would estimate as loud as a microwave. My unit is in the middle of the house so you can definitely hear it when it runs but I am not annoyed by the white noise. The heater produces condensate (water from the heat pump). This requires drain access of some sort. While I don’t have a drain in the room I have plumbed this to my water softener system. The heater had an intake and exhaust which cannot be blocked. I have it very close to a wall and it’s almost an issue. The heater wasn’t in stock and took 30 days for it to be delivered. If this unit isn’t in stock, don’t expect it in a hurry.

Will pay for itself I hope
First impressions: It came well packaged, delivered by a trucking company. Installation was done by a licensed plumber. The LCD display is hard to read looking at the same level, you must look at it from slightly below or the display is unreadable. I finally got the app working after several attempts, somehow it was working with lots of great information and abilities the day after installation. The heat exchanger is quiet and it acts like an air conditioner in my garage, nice cool dehumidified air This hybrid type of water heater is not designed for small enclosed spaces, it needs lots of airspace to function properly, read the manual for details. The low energy usage is the biggest reason I bought this model. If you compare estimated annual costs of this system to an all electric, it pays for itself in 3 years or less.

Decent water heater BUT
I'll have to admit, I was super excited when we purchased this water heater and had it installed. It worked great from November to March. This month we have been receiving error codes every afternoon. EcoNet Alert - A005 Heat Pump Water Heater Gen 5 Compressor Shutdown: Discharge Temp High and a Hardware Alarm. The unit itself is set to Energy Saver mode. I have called Rheem twice and still to do this no one can give me an answer to what's wrongs. The installer isn't familiar with the units, so thats also a dead end. I was told this unit works efficiently between 40-145 degrees. Yet once the outside temperature nears 70 degrees we seem to get these errors. Any help from Rheem would be greatly appreciated.

Noisy
I do believe there would be a significant cost savings over the long term, but we will likely be paying a plumber to move it. The unit sits in our garage, but we can hear it through about half the house. The noise is not just fan noise which would be ok, but there is a definite hum.
