Questions & Answers

Brackets are very wobbly, do not fit into track securely - Anyway to fix this? Same question asked already but the answer was unacceptable

A customer asked the same question in this post and got an answer that did not address the problem at all, in fact it was a nonsensical repsonse. This has nothing to do with the tracks, they are secure on the wall. However, when I go to insert the brackets only the top hook of the bracket slides in and down to the bottom of the rectangular hole on the track. The bottom hook just inserts in the hole but is too short for it to slide down and rest on the bottom. Hence what you get is a very wobbly bracket that moves freely side to side, which means the shelf wobbles back and forth too. Unbelievable as all 6 brackets have the same outcome. I have installed many wire shelves (Closet Maid) and I have not had this issue - those brackets always fit snugly in the holes in the track. So, is there a fix for this? If not this is indeed an inferior product which you should remove and I will recommend that others steer clear. If this can't be fixed in a reasonable manner, even though I got these for my craft room and were more aesthetically pleasing, I'll go back to Closet Maid wire shelving because it's much sturdier, I can hang the tracks off a horizontal track which means I don't have a bunch of holes in my wall because I never further secure those tracks! Last chance Rubbermaid.

I have found that if you just place the bracket in the slot, they WILL be wobbly. You need to take a hammer and tap them snugly into the slot for more stability. They won't wobble as much, but if this is still too much movement for you, you need to go for the double tracks and brackets.

These are super floppy! Any way to make them stable?

We just installed the single track rods and used these to hold shelves. They move side to side dangerously easy with a touch of a finger and so now do the shelves placed on top of them. Is there any way to make them sturdier?
Asked by: Frustrated
notch the shelving to go around the tracks.

Why doesn't the bracket fit into the track securely?

Asked by: help
I always knock them down a bit with a hammer.....use a light touch and that should secure them in.

These can be used on both wire or wood shelves. Would fit perfectly on the 12" Rubbermaid wire shelves.

The only drawback, was that the Wadsworth, Ohio store only had a handful of each size of track that is used with it. This made it difficult to put together a whole shelf system using tracks that looked the same.

Unfortunately HD did not have longer ones. I am not sure if they are manufactured in longer lengths. Would've been much better. So gave a 4 rating.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No Screws It's a great product with one huge exception: The screw holes in the uprights and their lack of countersinking, the lack of screw specifications and the lack of screws. I have installed thousands of dollars worth of this shelving for customers. I won't recommend or install it any more because of the pain of the install. The screw holes should be the right size, and properly beveled to accept a 2 inch (for hard surface mount) or 2 1/2 inch (for over drywall mount) color matching wood screw with a Robertson head. Rubbermaid should sell them with the product at a reasonable price. Without such screws I cannot easily or properly install the product. The screws need to be countersunk to permit a full range installation of shelving brackets into the uprights. Protruding screw heads not only prevent a bracket install above the heads, but prevent the use of adjacent slots as well. #8 screws have a head that is too big. I can make them work by custom countersinking, with a metal cutting countersink bit, each and every support hole. Thanks for the inconvenience, guys. #6 screws are a little better for countersink effort but are spindly, only available in max 2 inch length and so too weak for heavy loads on the shelves. I don't know if this is a Rubbermaid problem, or a Home Depot problem, but it's a problem.

Measure from the wall and you will quickly find the missing 1/4 inch. I'm sure it was not made clear, but to stop sway and make your boards fit you actually have to notch a .25X.5 wide cutout into the shelving boards. Why are the boards not cut to accommodate? Tell us right now, what is the distance between your wall mounted tracks? Do you even know? My home has 16 inch centers between studs, but I have around an inch of half of freedom to screw the tracks down. SO, there is no way for the manufacturer to cut the boards to fit your home as they are unable to read minds. As someone mentioned before, I have seen these single track since the 1970's. My father put them in my sisters room. I also climbed on them and never fell. He also did this without internet to research, or to complain.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Instructions? Sure would be handy to have some instructions on the 4C74 Single Track Universal Hardware. Nifty looking bow ties, neato screws and some really cool sticker dots. How am I supposed to use these properly?????
