A:  No, I do not believe they can. They are made specifically for the rails.

A:  Yes, we hang the bike vertically by the front wheel. Thus the absence of the top bar is not an issue

A:  It would depend on your bike height, and how far up you want to reach! I placed mine shoulder height so that I could easily lift the bike onto the bar... also be wary, this hook only works for a bike with a flat bottom bar!

A:  Ours is about 1 1/4 feet from the ceiling. But since ceiling heights differ, the better measure for the hook might be about 7 feet from the floor.

A:  It mainly depends on how high you want to lift it or if you need it a certain height to clear a vehicle pulling in, etc. I have my road bike on the top rack (2' from ceiling) and my mountain bike on a lower rack (4 1/2' from ceiling) slightly offset sideways from each other for clearance.

A:  The bike hook measures approximately 7-inches from the top where it attaches to the FastTrack down to where the arms of the two hooks jut out. When hanging your bike you rest the top tube of the frame on the two hooks. The height between the ceiling and the bracket (top of FastTrack) will therefore depend on the distance from the top tube of the frame and the height of your seat or handle bars.

A:  About six inches more than the distance between your bike’s horizontal top bar and the top of your seat or handlebar, whichever is the highest.

A:  There is a utility hook that can be use for skateboards.

A:  No, this will not hold skateboards.

A:  Yes, but it would be perpendicular to the wall

A:  Yes there are hooks for practically everything. They all link up to the Rubbermaid system. Very easy to use and rearrange when necessary.

A:  I don't have a skateboard, but check out the Multi-Purpose Hook. I think that would work vertically.
